Woodland Lodge #1299
I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge some of our members and their spouses who have been busy helping and promoting our Lodge. Thank you to Dave Eddy and his crews that have worked so hard on our Wednesday night meals for our members that were left open. David also organized our Fishing Derby once again. It was a big success, one of our largest in participation in the past few years. Thank you, again, Dave Eddy and your crews for all you do for our Lodge. Thanks go to Joyce Hall and Pam Newman for organizing and overseeing the cast that performed and the crews that cooked and served the meal at the Murder Mystery Dinner. Thank you Joyce and Pam for putting this event together, and most of all, for putting up with and helping me learn my part. It was a great show, all in attendance enjoyed it. Thank you, Carl and Danielle Rocksvold for all of your time and effort organizing and overseeing our Annual Family Campout. This year our campout had one of the largest participation of members in recent years. The activities were well organized and lots of fun was had by all. Thank you Carl, Danielle and your crews for working so hard. I’m sorry if I didn’t mention everyone that helped to make these events a success (I don’t have enough room in this article). Those of you who attended these events know that we have thanked them during the event. For without those others behind the scenes, we wouldn’t have had such success. Thanks to all of you that support our Lodge events by working and attending. These events show that you do care for your Lodge. Show it more, for only if you participate in your Lodge, can it grow and prosper. For coming events, look inside and plan to attend. Show you care, volunteer…. Sincerely, Brian Flemmer, Exalted Ruler

From the Secretary
Another month, another dollar. Our District Deputy visit has passed. The leaves have changed color. Suntans are fading, along with my memory! The holiday season is approaching. Work goes on in the office of the Secretary. There has been some discussion around the Lodge about who is the boss in the Secretary’s office. To end all discussion, the Secretary is in charge of the office. The Secretary and office staff of Woodland 1299 is responsible for the following:
PAST STATE VICE PRESIDENTS Tom Gravink 1980-81 Herb Caudill 1988-89 Bob Doud 1991-92 PDDGER Tom Gravink 1985-86 Bob Doud 1993-94
•Receiving all funds from all entities of the Lodge •Maintaining all employee records and verifying with House Committee or Trustees if
questions arise
•Preparing all accounting records send to the Lodge accounting service •Maintaining all membership records •Assisting all officers as needed
Absolutely no information or requests are passed on to any employee, officer or member by the office assistance, without the approval of the Lodge Secretary. If any member personally knows of a problem with the office, please contact me or the Exalted Ruler before you discuss it with the bartenders, janitors or other members. I will gladly answer any and all questions that fall into my realm. The answer to last month’s question: False. Section 12.050, Opinion 16 states: The Secretary may not simultaneously hold the positions of Secretary and Club Manager. Aren’t you lucky!!! True or False: Woodland Lodge may legally hold one meeting a month during November and December without asking the District Deputy for dispensation. Everybody have a happy Thanksgiving. Fraternally, Tom Gravink, Secretary

Lest We Forget
On Sunday, December 3, we will hold our annual Elks Memorial Service. The Memorial Service will be conducted in the Lodge Room at 4:30 pm, and your attendance will be deeply appreciated. How quick we tend to forget our absent members who have gone from our midst. Let us attend and reflect on those many friendly hours we spent with these members who we will know no more. Let us pay homage and meditate. Our very special guests on this Sunday will be the widows and families of our departed members. All Elks and their families should plan to attend these services. Dinner will be available for $15.00 by reservation only and will be served at 5:30 following the Service. R.V.S.P - 662-9138

On August 25, several members of the Lodge traveled to Yountville Veterans Hospital and Retirement Home to cook a BBQ lunch. We were joined by other members of our District Lodges. We served over 120 Veterans a great chicken and tri-tip BBQ, with all the trimmings. Even if you don’t help cook or serve a meal, it’s nice to just sit and talk with these courageous Veterans. I, personally, had a great time and would like to thank those who joined us for the day trip. They were: Bob Tauzer and his wife, Joyce, Tom Wells and his wife, Karen, Garlan Aday, and of course my fellow co-chairman Ried Anderson. Thanks for the help everyone. You made me proud to be an Elk. Remember, wherever there are Veterans, the BPOE will never forget them. Malcolm Fenner, Veterans Service Co-Chair

Here it is November. The beginning of the holiday season and it also marks the mid term for the Elks year. Things at the Lodge have been slow, making it hard to manage, but as usual, things start to happen that picks up the pace. This time of year seems to bring more people in and at the same time, stay closer to home and friends. Some of our old stand-by events are coming up, sausage feed and lamb feed. Bring a friend and promote membership. The Thanksgiving and Christmas festivities are right around the corner, have fun and be safe. Please keep our troops in your thought and prayers, as I know what it is like to be gone during the holidays. Anything you can do for them helps. A few more months to so, so keep up the good work and don’t let your guard down. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Cook a dinner, work a bingo night or donate your time to help other members that have volunteered. This month is our Veteran’s Dinner. Plan to attend and visit with our local veterans as we honor them for their service to our country and its freedom. Recently, a piano was donated to the Lodge by Karen Lafferty, with the assistance of Tom Workman. I want to thank those volunteers who helped deliver it to the Elks West Lounge. Since it has been moved, the need to tune it is inevitable. Anyone knowing of someone we can solicit to tune it up would be appreciated. Again, thank all of you who were involved. Woodland Elks Support “Project Play”
In the early morning hours of July 16, 2007, a suspected arson fire destroyed a portion of the children’s play structure at John Ferns Park Playground. This playground is the most widely used playground in Woodland. A committee was formed to rebuild the structure. It was decided by the committee that the children of Woodland should have a say in the reconstruction of the play structure. After meeting with the children, the committee decided that no child should be disappointed and thus a list of playground equipment was created. The rebuild is will take place beginning October 31 and concluding on November 4. Costs for the structure is higher that originally anticipated due to the increased size of the structure. The city feels that the insurance company will not cover the entire cost and will cover only the cost of the original design. It is estimated that the cost to rebuild the playground will be between $118,000 and $120,000. the shortfall will have to be raised through private and corporate donations. Donations can be made in any amount, or by purchasing a tile for $100. It is our hope that you will help the children of Woodland with a donation to rebuild the John Ferns Park Playground play structure. Contributions made to this project are tax deductible according to IRS regulations. Woodland Rotary Endowment is a charitable 501 –3c #68-0270150 organization. Please make your check payable to Woodland Rotary Endowment and please notate “Project Play” or “Ferns Park” on the memo line. Donations should be sent to Woodland Elks Lodge, 500 Bush Street, Woodland, CA 95695. Exalted Ruler Brian Flemmer and the Lodge Officers support this project. I would like to thank the Lodge for their sponsorship of a $100 tile for this very worthwhile project. Sincerely, Dennis Puccetti

The 2007 Elks Family Campout was held at Casini Ranch this year. It was a very successful campout, with over 40 rigs making the trip. The weather was great and the activities were all fun. We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their generous donations and to everyone who donated extra prized for the raffle. Finally, a special thanks to everyone who donated their time and resources to help organize, promote and get it all done for the campout. We could not have had such a successful campout without the talent and generosity of our volunteers. We hope to see all of you again next year. Carl & Danielle Rocksvold
