Do you have a favorite radio show but can’t seem to find the time to
listen to it when it airs? What if you could listen to that radio show on
your computer or even on your iPod or other mp3 player? What if you
could download and listen to every episode of that radio show? Podcasts
allow you to do that!
Podcasts are radio and TV programs you can download from the
Internet. For instance, iTunes offers podcasts that are free to download.
You can even subscribe to podcasts so that new episodes are automatically
downloaded as they become available!
Podcasts are different from Internet radio stations, which stream
over the Internet, playing music as the data hits your computer. Podcast
episodes are downloaded to your computer and then they can be copied to your mp3 players so they
can be listened to whenever and wherever you want!
Creating a podcast on a PC is not difficult but you will need the right tools. An audio file is re-
corded on a computer using a microphone and software to properly capture and edit the audio foot-
age. Then information about the completed audio file is added to a text file called an RSS 2.0 feed.
Podcast feeds are RSS files that describe your podcast, along with information for each show and al-
low users to subscribe to your podcast. The podcast is then uploaded to a webpage for users to find.
You do not have to have an iPod or even a Macintosh computer to listen to a podcast. All you
need is a computer with a fast internet connection. Try it yourself! Happy listening!
NOTE: WISD requests that you do not download podcasts and store podcasts at work unless
it is for instructional use. The downloads require a lot of bandwidth and storage.
What’s on Your Mind?. . . What is Picasa?
Picasa software is a free download from the internet. (You can download Pi-
casa from http://picasa.google.com/download/index.html) to use on your home
computer. It is one of the applications on each WISD workstation.
It can be used for basic digital photo editing, organizing, slide shows and
printing. You can organize your photos into albums and those albums can be organ-
ized into collections. When you open Picasa, it will automatically find photos on the
workstation and sort them into visual albums by date. You can use a drag and drop
method to reorganize your photos into albums or you can choose to create albums and import your
photos manually. You can also import photos from digital cameras, jump drives and other external
devices. This program is very user friendly and is a great photo organizer.
Documentation on the use of Picasa can be found on the www.wash.k12.mi.us/files/picasa/
