Wilber takes helm as club’s new Commodore
From nationwide professional sailboat racing to owning a sailmaking company to winning the CYC Star Fleet Championship for 20+ years — Richard Wilber is as immersed in sailing as he is life at CYC. Growing up here at the Club along with his twin brother Robert and four other siblings, Commodore Wilber commented his best friends are still the guys he went through Sail Camp with in the early 1970s. “To me, CYC is like one huge extended family,” he says. “While growing up, I felt like I had 500 parents keeping an eye on me and I guess I still do… Seriously, with that in mind, the biggest reason I wanted to be Commodore is to give back to the place that has given me and my family so much.” This year’s main objectives are aimed at preserving the Club's 129 years of tradition and steering it ahead by: • Maintaining financial stability • Increasing membership growth and retention • Providing a range of activities for all members • Getting more new members involved in club events. He plans on continuing with and developing several new initiatives begun by P/C Jack Salisbury. “The maintenance of our physical plant and the continuation of the planning stages of a new Center Isle complex are the biggest projects facing us this year," he says. This hardworking yet humorous Commodore feels that the predecessors to his position have plotted the Club on a great course, and hopes his business experience will be an asset to keeping the Club on track. Although he did not start his own company until after college, he has been making sails all through high school. The St. Edward alum earned a finance degree from Cleveland State University and continues to live in Rocky River, where he was born, works and is close to the Club. He has been active in almost every aspect of island life and has served on virtually every committee, from coaching Junior Sail Race Team to going on the Power Fleet Long Cruise (albeit on a sailboat). "Serving on the Flag Line has been a tremendous experience. With the most rewarding by-product being the many new friends we have made along the way, especially the friendship my wife and I have developed with Jack and Kris Salisbury. They have both been guiding lights for us to follow.” With many sailing honors to his credit, from being a Finalist on the 1980 Olympic Sailing Team to a Blue Star Champion in the Star class, his most memorable win was in the prestigious Mackinaw Race. “I got the best trophy of them all when I met my future wife Julie while onboard!” he says. When not on his boat, Desperado, in the summer, he and the family (Ashley, 20, Claire, 9, Colleen, 6 and Joseph, 4) practically live at the pool and enjoy all the other activities the Club has to offer. 2007 is going to be another great year on the island, “Please come and share it with us!” P

As this fiscal year comes to an end, I would like to thank Commodore Jack Salisbury, the Flag Line, Board of Trustees and committee chairpersons for their contributions in making this another successful year at The Cleveland Yachting Club. 2006 was a year in which the well-attended activities, committee and fleet initiatives gained momentum each passing month. • We instituted a few new events — SCUBA diving certification, a Fishing Fleet and Speaker Series. • The Club’s Sailing Regattas and Power Fleet functions were enjoyed by all, with CYC being honored by Kevin Carroll and his crew capturing first place in the T10 Nationals. They did their club proud! • CYC’s Sail Camp met the expectations of all attending ending with a fine representation at Junior Bay Week. • Swim Team made CYC shine this year thanks to our devoted swimmers. • The Golf Fleet as usual had many great times and if you think fishing stories are exaggerated, you should listen to the golfers. • The Skeet Fleet proved rewarding and added several new members (by gunpoint). • The Club’s bridge and poker players continually boast of great times and the Wet Hens enjoyed their Wednesday morning sailing. Each of these active groups contribute to the success of this Club. To the new members, I encourage you to get involved. October started a new fiscal year and with it brings new events and traditional functions. Mark your calendars for upcoming events such as Thanksgiving, Ladies Champagne Luncheon, Children’s Christmas Party, Chorus Night, Christmas Eve Dinner, New Year’s Eve and this year’s Chile and Argentina Wine and Dinner Pairing on January 13. Lastly, thanks to our staff for their dedication and performance this year. CYC has a great team of employees and I know they are looking forward to being of service in the coming year.

CYC Speaker Series kicks off this month
Summer has faded to fall and we are heading toward winter — time to gear up for the CYC Speaker Series. Our first event is November 8 when the Speaker Series hosts the resurrected Camera Club for an evening of special travels by CYC members. We will view shows of member trips to South America, the Middle East and Africa. Experience the sights and hear the stories and find out how to do it yourself. We start at 7:30 p.m., after a chance to get a Family Night Special dinner. The second Speaker Series event is a repeat of sorts, where we are bringing back Tom Korokny, our speaker on the History of Lyman Boats. For our December event, Tom will do a follow-up on the rich subject of marine woodworking — tools and techniques. This subject was a topic of great interest to those who were with us last year, so we thought it would be great to bring Tom back so we can hear all about his special skills. Join us December 13 at 7:30 p.m. Bring ideas and plans for your woodworking projects. There will be a full session of CYC Speaker Series events this winter, covering topics of interest to all members, from power to sail fleet, and all other points. Check the e-blasts for updates. P

Members enjoy Fall Land Cruise to Nantucket
More than 30 CYC members traveled to Nantucket for the Fall Cruise. Though often advertised as a "land" cruise, this year's four-day trip included a short flight to Providence, followed by a van ride to Hyannis where the group split into two with some going across via ferry on the 26 mile trip to the island, but with the majority taking advantage of a scheduled and highly entertaining whale watching trip along the way... Nantucket truly offered something for everyone! You could simply relax, or enjoy the non-stop activities which

Fishing Fleet Report
Near perfect weather presented a fantastic day on the water for our 1st Annual Perch FUNAMENT! Many families enjoyed fishing together for those delicious Lake Erie Yellow Perch that began to cooperate late in the morning. With a productive day behind us, the Fishing Fleet actually served more than 150 people on the Porch that evening, making for a perfect ending to a perfect day! Thank you to all the anglers who participated and especially to our hardworking volunteer fish cleaners and cooks. Pictured here are members enjoying the day on water and back on shore. Our Steelhead Tournament off our own CYC docks concluded what proved to be a very successful first year. Thank you to the Flag Line and the Board for making this a possibility! Finally, stay tuned to your Islander for fleet updates and information on our Ice Fishing Trip to Put-In-Bay. Tight lines everyone. I

Roberts Race / Lighthouse Challenge
CYC hosted the 76th Annual F.W. Roberts Race on June 17. This year the format returned to the long race course, covering 88 nautical miles. The weather was near perfect, with a good morning breeze, calm afternoon stall, followed by a beautiful Southwest sunset breeze. This year 16 boats entered and the overall winner for the third time was J. & D. Hawkins on First Tracks, a Benneteau 40.7 from Edgewater. Second place went to home-club favorite Robert and Regina Wilber’s Mister Ed, and third place was Tim and Gretchen Roberts (appropriate) on Mack Daddy from Edgewater. Dividing up the fleet results, the A-Fleet top three were also the above-mentioned overall top three. In the B-Fleet, Ken Cort won on Outlet Express, second went to Arlene Steuer on Wiemer, and third was Michael Mervart on Magic. In the C-fleet, Harald Bransch won on LifeIsGood, second to John Ollilia on Finnair, and third to Wes Scott and Tom Gibbs on Great Scot. The Lighthouse Challenge was resurrected this year to recognize excellent long distance sail racing. Composed of the competitors in the F.W. Roberts Race and the Falcon Cup, a total of over 110 nautical miles was covered in the two events. First place for the 2006 Lighthouse Challenge was earned by Tim and Gretchen Roberts on Mack Daddy, from Edgewater, with a solid second place by J. & D. Hawkins on First Tracks, and third place went to John Ollilia on Finnair. Harald Bransch on LifeIsGood was the top CYC challenger in a close fourth place. Congratulations to all. Next year’s 77th running of the F.W. Roberts Race will remain as a long format race, with a possible addition to the qualifying races for the prestigious Lighthouse Challenge. Stay tuned and get ready to race. F

The Power Fleet wrapped up the 2006 season with its tenth and final official cruise to the Inner Harbor for the notorious Dawg Pound Cruise. With higher fuel prices, and some changing demographics, our most successful cruises were arguably some of the ones closer to home. Yet amazingly enough, our burgee still made appearances in ports across all five of the Great Lakes and Eastern Seaboard by a whole host of our members. Thank you to the Harders and all the Cruise Skippers for your energies and efforts pulling together so many terrific events. We all had a lot of fun and made some new friends along the way. Our new ’07 Chairpeople are Chris and Sophia Tjotjos. Members since ’93 and very experienced cruisers, the Tjotjos are well known on the island, enjoying cruising on their 56’ SeaRay, SILENT T’s. Besides having a lot of experience, the Tjotjos have the energy and determination to make ’07 one to look forward to. Marking the end of a great sailing season
Members took advantage of some of the best sailing weather on Lake Erie this fall at the 1st Annual Fall Regatta. The Regatta marked the end of the season on October 7. After the races, members enjoyed warm food, cold beverages, awards and music. The next day Sail Fleet gathered for the Chili Bowl to celebrate another fun and competitive sailing season at CYC! Although the races were canceled because of lack of wind, sailors vied for the best chili recipe. Judges tasted more than 40 chili entries and awarded Gary Smith the winner of the Best Chili. Both these events had great turnouts, as the weather was just beautiful as can be seen in these photos from the weekend. F
