					Grains Industry Research Scholarship (GRS)
Grains Industry Research Scholarships (GRSs) are available to students of excellence
proceeding to postgraduate study in a field relevant to the future of the Australian grains
industry.

The scholarship is for three (3) years and comprises a tax-free stipend of $25,000pa and
$5,000pa for project operating expenses.

The GRDC invites and assesses GRS applications once a year. The application closing date,
for full time study each calendar is the last Friday of October.


1.      Eligibility

To be eligible for a GRS:
 The candidate must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
 The candidate must receive acceptance at a recognised research institution
 The candidate must undertake full time postgraduate study


2.      Selection Criteria

The main criteria used in selecting successful applicants include:
 Strong academic record as demonstrated through academic transcripts
 Expectation of first class or high second class honours
 Demonstrated research ability of the applicant
 Quality and relevance of the project to grains industry needs
 Scientific credibility of the supervisor and institution in the area being studied
 Three (3) satisfactory referee reports submitted by the due date


3.      Applying

Applicants are required to use the GRDC’s ‘Grains Industry Research Scholarship (GRS)
Application’ template.

Applicants must arrange for three (3) referee reports to be submitted under separate cover.
The ‘Confidential Report on GRS Candidates’ form must be used and is available from
www.grdc.com.au/reserchers/forms.htm.

When completed, the GRDC requires four (4) signed paper copies (A4 size, double sided &
stapled) of the application and referee reports to be submitted. These should be addressed to:

An electronic copy of the application and all three referee reports is also required and must be
emailed to forms@grdc.com.au. The name of the emailed documents should incorporate the
applicant’s name.

Both the paper and electronic copies must reach the GRDC by 5pm on the closing date.

Applications will not be acknowledged upon receipt.

Applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application by mid December.

Please note: No late applications or referee reports will be accepted


3.       Reporting Requirements

If successful, supervisors must ensure that the GRDC receive progress reports, a final report
and a bound copy of the scholarship recipient’s final research thesis.

    Progress Reports

     By 1 February of each year during which the recipient receives scholarship funds, the
     recipient’s supervisor must complete and submit a standard GRDC Progress Report
     template, available from http://www.grdc.com.au/director/apply/ .

     Attached to this GRDC Progress Report, must be any relevant academic progress
     reports in accordance with the Research Organisation’s normal procedures. Those
     reports will describe the recipient’s carrying out of the educational research and will
     contain comments by the supervisor on the recipient’s progress and achievements, and
     whether the recipient is fulfilling the requirements of the postgraduate course in which he
     or she is enrolled.

    Final Report

     Within 3 months of the scholarship completion date, the recipient’s supervisor must
     complete and submit a standard GRDC Final Report template, available from
     http://www.grdc.com.au/director/apply/ .

    Final research thesis

     The recipient’s final research thesis or final research paper must be provided to the
     GRDC:
     (a) within 18 months after the end of the scholarship period; and
     (b) within 30 days of the final research thesis or final research paper being placed in the
         Research Organisation’s library or otherwise being made publicly available.


4.       Payment of scholarship funds

Scholarship funds are paid directly to the research organisation in instalments. The first
installment is paid upfront. Following instalments are paid after progress reports are received
and approved by the GRDC.

The GRDC will withhold half of the final instalment until the recipient’s final research thesis or
final research paper is received.
