Students Set High Goals for Themselves
It is often pointed out that in order to truly be successful, one must have goals. It is in trying to accomplish those goals that we often
stretch ourselves beyond our comfort zones and dare to try new things. Several weeks into the school year, Ms. Russell’s students wrote
goals for themselves. Their goals are appropriate for every student at High Hills Elementary. As we are now in the second quarter of
school, why don’t you take a look at some of their goals and see which ones you should set for yourself.
Student Goals for This School Year:
o Make the A/B Honor Roll
o Be a STAR Reader
o Make it through the year without any referrals
o Read every night to become a better reader
o Improve my grades
o Stay on task in my classes
o Do my BEST everyday
o Turn in all classwork and homework
o Meet my Accelerated Reader goal each phase
o Make the A-Honor Roll
o Come to school prepared
o Respect everyone
o Go all year with no Interventions from my teacher
o Make new friends
Choose some of these goals to work on in the coming weeks. See how great your school year can be if you just set goals!

Friendship for Today

SUMMARY:
St. Louis, Missouri, 1954. Black students are leaving their neighborhood schools as a result of the Supreme Court decision in
Brown v. Board of Education to end segregation. Rosemary and her best friend J.J. are pleased that they will support each
other in the move to the new school. But J.J. is diagnosed with polio, and Rosemary must attend the new school alone.
When Rosemary arrives, she is the only African-American child in the class, and she is sitting next to the neighborhood
bully. As a sixth grader, Rosemary must deal with racism at school and tension at home between her parents. As the year
progresses, Rosemary sees that prejudice, family problems, and intolerance can provide plenty of worries. But things are not
always as they seem, and friendship can take many forms. A bit of humor and persistence can help in the most adverse
situations.
