     Choose ONE of the following questions

1. Tragic Hero: “Achilles is the first great tragic hero in world literature.” Discuss the conflicts
    of Achilles as developed by Homer and how the author finally resolves them.
2. The Wrath of Achilles: The entire epic is framed within the Wrath of Achilles. Why? How
    does the poet highlight larger over reaching issues such as life and death within the Wrath of
    Achilles. Why the poet would chose to focus on his wrath?
3. Gods: How does Homer conceive of the Gods as portrayed in The Iliad and what functions
    do they serve?
4. A comparison of gods and mortals by examining the dual narratives, divine and human,
    which lead up to and feature Hektor’s aristeia. How does this dual level stress the nature and
    meaning of human mortality.
5. Heroic Code-Kleos: Describe the concept and contents of the heroic code that underlies the
    behavior of the leading characters of The Iliad.
6. What is the role of Patroklos’ character as Achilles’ substitute in battle.
7. What is your interpretation of the scene in which Zeus pities the immortal horses of Achilles
    as they weep for the dead Patroklos.
8. What is the significance of the scenes that appear on Achilles’ shield? Are they connected to
    the larger themes of the Iliad?
9. Individual Glory / concern for Others: One of the principal conflicts depicted in the narrative
    of The Iliad is that between individual glory and compassionate concern for others. Discuss
    and give illustrations.
10. Prophecy, Oracles and Dreams: Discuss the use and function of prophecy, omen dreams and
    oracles in The Iliad.
11. Homer’s portrayal of Human Nature: Discuss Homer’s greatness as a portrayer of human
    personality. Consider heroic epitaphs and actions.
12. Does Homer’s epic idealize human suffering to give it meaning? Do we see this in all
    literature of epic proportions? Give examples and discuss.

18. Compare and contrast Odysseus in the Iliad to the Odysseus we see in the Odyssey. What
    are the differences in his personality and behavior? Does the tension between these
    differences convey any larger themes addressed in the Iliad?
19. Character of Paris: Analyze the personality of Paris as depicted in this epic (you may also
    draw from Ovid’s work).
20. Character of Helen: How does Homer portray Helen as complex, tragic character.
21. Character of Hector: Next to Achilles, Hector is the leading character of The Iliad. Discuss
    his personality and his code of living, and show how Homer attempts to make him a
    sympathetic character.
22. Character of Diomedes: How does Homer portray Diomedes? How does his aggressiveness
    toward the gods in battle reveal any larger theme of the Iliad?
23. Hector/Andromache Scene: Describe the Hector/Andromache scene in Book VI and discuss
    how it shows the literary genius of Homer. Consider archetypal concern with choosing
    between love or duty.
24. Book XVII shows Zeus pitying Sarpedon, Hector, and Achilles’ horses. What purpose do
    you think is served by this? Why do we see Zeus feeling more pity here than elsewhere in
    the Iliad?
25. Theme: “Wisdom through Suffering” may be said to be one of the leading themes of The
    Iliad. Discuss this theme and cite several examples (you may cite “The Book of Job,” if you
    do so sparingly).
26. Death and immortality: Do the Homeric heroes look upon death as something to be desired?
    What sort of immortality, if any, do they anticipate? How do these beliefs affect their attitude
    toward life? Cite several examples to defend you case.
27. Death and Beauty: What is the felling about the treatment of the bodies of fallen comrades?
    How is this related (1) to the Greek idea of beauty and (2) to the conception of death?
28. War: Does The Iliad glorify war or is the Iliad an anti war piece. Consider the rules of
    sportsmanship are observed? Do these ideas compare with 20th century warfare? Why does
    Homer allude to the families of the fallen heroes?

    certain characteristics that can be delineated. Does The Iliad follow this design.
30. Gender roles: Compare and Contrast gender roles. Consider strict codes of male/female
    honor and how characters of the same gender (Helen, Hector, Paris) violate or uphold those

    does it reveal about the Greek culture? How does that compare to today?
35. Psychological Influence: The Greek characters (divine and mortal) are representations of
    psychological behaviors. Indeed many psychological terms and conditions are named after
    various characters. What characters emulate what behaviors?
