LOS DE ABAJO Q+A When, why and where was the group formed and how? - September 1992. - How: We met playing with different bands in the underground scene in Mexico. - Where: We all studied at the Mexico Nacional Autónoma University. - How did you get together? Improvisations, jamming, collective composings. How would you describe the style of Los de Abajo? - Cybertropic Punk Salsa. - TropiPunk. How often do you rehearse, meet up? Do you see each other as friends as well as a band? - We see each other every day, as musicians & sometimes as friends in clubs. What are the musical influences of the group? - Mano Negra (Manu - Son Jarocho (Mono Chao) Blanco) - Pérez Prado (Mambo) - Steel Pulse - Rubén Blades - Prince - Sergent García - Sex Pistols - Macaco - Silvio Rodriguez - The Clash - Morcheeba - Madness - Chico Cesar - Los Fabulosos - Vocal Sampling Cadillacs - Among others - Irakere - La Banda del Recodo What is your opinion of the new album, how does it differ to the first? - It has a new sound. - It is much more simple. - There is a different sound to every song. - Each song has its own identity and its own history. - We are more mature musically speaking and we influenced more by European alternative music. Who introduced you to Macaco? - David Byrne. What was it like working with Macaco? - We learned a lot. - We exchanged a lot of ideas and there was a complete understanding between us. - The work was intense, spontaneous, creative and funny. - We have become friends. What attracted Macaco to your music? - The mixture of urban culture with Mexican folklore. - The ability to fuse musics from around the world. - The political ideology of the band. You don’t have a main spokesperson for the group, there aren’t many groups who work that way, is it difficult maintaining a sense of the co-operative in today’s world, and in the world of music? - Yes the yearning to be a co-operative is difficult but we have acheived it after staying together for 10 years in the world of music. - We have a strong desire to develop and acheive equally. What would be your message for European and US audiences? - To rule obeying the rules. - No to retaliate. - No to war. - No to racism. - Equality to everyone in the world. And for the Mexican audiences? - Cultural open-mindedness. - Revaluation of our roots. - Tolerance and dialogue. What is your biggest dream for the world, and for Los de Abajo? - The whole world living peacefully together in equal economic conditions. - To help the opressed people in the world. - To take our music and our beliefs to any place in the globe.
