LEARNING INTENTIONS:

By the end of the unit pupils should be able to:
   • Explain the difference between idiom, accent, dialect and jargon.
   • Recognise the richness in our local speech
   • Discuss the ways language is used in different settings
   • Understand some of the inßuences on the way we speak and how it changes over time.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

Martina, the Martian girl, is still struggling with the complexities of the English language but now she
has DAVID to help her. DAVID – Dialect and Accent Voice and Idiom Decoder. This dramatic device
allows the children to examine the concepts of idiom, dialect and accent. The idea of jargon – “the
kind of language used by a group of people connected by the jobs they do or the things they are
interested in”, is introduced in this programme.

The teaching points in the programme are delivered with a great deal of humour and difÞcult
linguistic concepts are communicated through the misunderstandings between the characters.

If the class is listening to a taped version of the broadcast, it may be useful to stop at times to
explain sections and to check pupils understanding thus far.

Key words used during dialect; idiom; jargon; accent; language
