Mission Statement:
The Dance Program at Meredith provides women with opportunities to develop artistically through technical
training, creative exploration, and self-discovery. Committed to educating the whole person/artist, the
curriculum integrates the liberal arts and sciences with the specialized study of dance as a performing art in
preparation for professional work in the field and for continued study.

Goal 1: To promote a learning environment that is supportive, challenging, experiential, and prepares
students for professional careers in dance.

Objective 1: To support full-time and part-time faculty as they are integral to maintaining the quality of the
learning environment

1.1 The Director of Dance will create a handbook for new and part-time dance faculty, which will include
    sample syllabi, a schedule of dance faculty and student meetings, registration and grading procedures, and a
    contact list.
1.2 The Director of Dance will identify courses for new faculty
1.3 Dance faculty will devote one meeting per semester to discussion of teaching and learning.

Evaluation Method:
1.1 The handbook will be created.
1.2 The Fall and Spring schedule will be created.
1.3 Minutes of dance faculty meetings will be filed

Goal 1: To promote a learning environment that is supportive, challenging, experiential, and prepares
students for professional careers in dance.

Objective 2: To support the development of students’ professional careers through networking and conference
participation.

2.1 Dance majors will participate in the American College Dance Festival, NC Dance Alliance Annual Event,
    and the NCAPHERD conference.

2.2 Students will be encouraged and supported in efforts to participate in Celebrating Student Achievement.

2.3 Dance majors and minors will participate in off-campus events and events for the college.

2.4 Faculty will write letters of recommendation for student awards and job applications.


Evaluation Method:
3.1 Keep a record of those who attend the events and conferences.
3.2 Document who participates in Day of Student Achievement
3.3 Document the number of students who participate in off campus events and those for the college.
3.4 Recommendation letters will be filed.

Objective 3: To provide learning opportunities for students to gain skills and knowledge in the use of
technology as a tool for learning and creating.

1.1 Dance faculty will continue to develop program and course information for the web.
1.2 Dance faculty will submit Technology grant to purchase digital video editing equipment to integrate into
    composition, methods, and practica courses.
1.3 Carol Finley will continue to facilitate interested students in videodance production.
1.4 Dance faculty will write and submit Technology Fluency Plan

1.2 The grant will be submitted.

students for professional careers in dance.

Objective 4: To ensure ongoing assessment of programs, faculty, and facilities, faculty will seek student
feedback on broad aspects of the Dance program.

2.1 Dance faculty will facilitate a fall meeting for dance majors and minors which will focus on building
    community and on faculty response to student feedback from May, 2006 meeting.
2.2 Dance faculty will coordinate an end-of-the-year feedback meeting in which students will have an
    opportunity to reflect upon the events of the year and to provide feedback related to all aspects of the
    program, including curriculum, policies and procedures, program events, etc.

Evaluation

2.1 The meeting will have occurred and a report given to students.
2.2 Students will provide their assessment of the program in their own end-of-the-year meeting and discuss their
   comments with the director of dance. They will complete Dance Program Activities Assessment form.

Objective 5: To update curriculum to reflect changes in field of dance, to meet College goals of reducing

Goal 2: To enhance marketing and recruiting for the Dance Program.

Objective 1: To create community awareness of the dance program.

1.1 Evening courses for audit and class-pass will be marketed to community
1.2 We will host High School Day of Dance
1.3 High School and Middle School Nights will be identified and promoted for MDT and DanceWorks
1.4 The North Carolina Dance Alliance and Triangle Dance Forum listservs will be utilized to disseminate
community information
1.5 We will host NCDF events
1.6 Students and faculty will participate in area dance events
1.7 Work with Marketing to assist with School of the Arts season brochure
1.8 Maintain website with updated program information

Evaluation:
1.1 Enrollment in evening courses will be reviewed and documented

Goal 2: To enhance marketing and recruiting for the Dance Program.

Objective 2: To inform prospective students and program alumnae about the Dance Program

2.1 The dance faculty will extend invitations to area high school dance students and teachers to be special guests
    at our dance concerts.

2.2 The new alumnae e-newsletter will be sent to alumnae at least twice during the year.

2.2 The dance faculty will attend the college academic fairs, open days, and Experience Meredith.

2.3 The dance faculty will provide master classes, lecture-demonstrations and performances off campus.

2.4 Carol Finley will create a marketing brochure that will incorporate brief information about the academic
    program and season information to be distributed at recruiting events

Goal 3: To produce dance events that contribute to students’ experiential learning and that enrich the
cultural life of the campus and Triangle community.

Objective 1: The dance faculty will plan, create, coordinate, and produce 4 major events and numerous smaller
workshops and master classes, including:
    Guest artist residency with Jennifer Sommers
    Three North Carolina Dance Festival concerts;
    Dance Works concert;
    High School Day of Dance.

                      Dance Major Educational Outcomes Assessment for Year 2006-07

     Program Level for Concentrations in Dance Education, Performance & Choreography, and Private
                                                Studio

Educational Outcome 1: By the end of the program, all dance majors will be technically competent in
modern dance skills.
Performance Criteria: All dance majors will score an average of 8.0 or above in modern dance technical skills
at an intermediate level (on a scale of 1-10).

Assessment Method:
An assessment rubric identifying particular technical skills will be used in evaluating student performance and
combined to assess cumulative scores.


Educational Outcome 2: By the end of the program, all dance majors will demonstrate compositional
skills through successful completion of solo and group dance compositions.
Performance Criteria: All students will have created solo and group composition work satisfying set criteria at
or above a 8.0 average (on a scale of 1-10).

Assessment Method:
An assessment rubric combining Composition I and Composition II skills is used in evaluating student
performance.


Educational Outcome 3: By the end of the program, all dance majors will be knowledgeable in the
production of dance.
Performance Criteria: All students will have successfully completed course work in the area of production and
met set course criteria at or above a 8.0 average (on a scale of 1-10).

Assessment Method:
The department will monitor the student's successful completion of course criteria in production classes.
