                                      MINUTES

 Board of Education minutes are action-only. Video tapes of regular meetings are available for viewing or
            purchase. Regular meetings are also replayed on Tuesday and Thursday evenings,
                    7:30 p.m., until the date of the next regularly scheduled meeting.

REGULAR BOARD MEETING held on Tuesday, June 3, 2008, in the Board Room of the
Educational Services Center, 34200 Alvarado-Niles Road, Union City, California.

Members Present:       Stringer, Dino, Estes, Gregorio, Harper
                       Student Member Mojadedi

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Board President Kevin Harper.

Adjourn to Closed Session
At 6:31 p.m., the Board of Education adjourned to Closed Session to discuss the following:
       1.      Recommended Expulsions (Education Code Section 48900)
       2.      California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Waivers
               for Special Education Students (Education Code Section 35146)

Reconvene to Open Session
The Board of Education reconvened to open session at 7:30 p.m. (Government Code Section
54957.6).

Expulsion Recommendations
(M.Stringer, S.Gregorio, C.) to accept the recommendation of the Superintendent to expel
Student No. 1 for the period of 6/30/08 to 1/28/09 from the New Haven Unified School District
for violation of Education Code Sections 48900 (g), (k) and (l). Student will receive a diploma
of graduation from Logan High School. There is no placement.

(M.Stringer, S.Dino, C.) to accept the recommendation of the Superintendent to expel Student
No. 2 for the period of 6/30/08 to 1/28/09 from the New Haven Unified School District for
violation of Education Code Sections 48900 (g), (k) and (l). December 19, 2008 is established as
the earliest date on which student may apply for readmission. Student is to be transferred to
Hayward Community Day School. Readmission criteria to include good behavior, attendance,
and grades; staying away from all school sites other than assigned campus; and no incident in the
community to require police intervention.

Community Day School. Readmission criteria to include good behavior, attendance, and grades;
staying away from all school sites other than assigned campus; and no incident in the community
to require police intervention.

transferred to Cabello Community Day School. Readmission criteria to include good behavior,
attendance, and grades; staying away from all school sites other than assigned campus; and no
incident in the community to require police intervention.

transferred to Quest Academy. Readmission criteria to include good behavior, attendance, and
grades; staying away from all school sites other than assigned campus; and no incident in the
community to require police intervention.

incident in the community to require police intervention.

The District Classified Employee of the Year is Sue Hollman. Ms. Hollman has served the
district for 22 years, initially at El Rancho Verde and 18 years at Barnard-White Middle School.

Board Members made comments and thanked these employees for their valuable support service
they provide for students and staff.

Associate Superintendent of Personnel Derek McNamara presented the nominees for Teacher of
the Year.

Mr. McNamara then introduced the 2007-08 District Teacher of the Year – Lynne Thomson.
Ms. Thomson is a teacher at Alvarado Middle School and has been employed by New Haven for
over 26 years.

Eugene Diaz, President of Division 91 of the California Retired Teachers Association, presented
Lynne Thomson with a $100 check as part of the CRTA scholarship mini-grant program.

Resolution No.115-0708, Recognition of Student Board Member Harris Mojadedi
Public Information Officer Rick La Plante presented Harris Mojadedi with a Resolution
recognizing him for his year of service on the Board as the student Board Representative.

Recognition of Logan Graduate and Former New Haven Student Board Representative Candice
Nguyen
Public Information Officer Rick La Plante recognized Former New Haven Student Board
Representative Candice Nguyen, who has recently returned from studies abroad in China and
South Africa and has created a documentary, “The Lost Boys of Liberia”.

A recess was held from 8:12 to 8:29 p.m.

Assessment of the Implementation of 2007-2008 Instructional Initiatives
Chief Academic Officer Glynn Thompson introduced Sarita Chawla, Kindergarten teacher from
Eastin Elementary. Ms. provided a PowerPoint presentation for the Assessment of the
Implementation of 2007-2008. Assisting her was kindergarten student Ameerah Hameed who
shared samples of her writing. Ms. Chawla shared that the bar has been raised for the reading
proficiency level in Kindergarten through Writer’s Workshop, which has also changed the
methodology for teaching writing.

Budget Development Update
In preparation for the budget adoption and approval of the multi-year projections scheduled for
the June 17th Board meeting, Chief Business Officer Carol Gregorich provided preliminary
information from the Governor’s message in January and the May revise.

Member Stringer:
        •     Attended the ROP Board Meeting for May.
        •     Attended Logan Honors Convocation.

        •     Attended Honors Convocation.
        •     Attended Ms. Chawla’s student play at Eastin Elementary. Eastin Elementary
              also recognized their parent volunteers.
        •     Will be attending graduation and promotion ceremonies as well as the Philipino-
              American Society for Education (PASE) scholarship reception event next week.

Member Gregorio:
     •      Attended Honors Convocation, and is also looking forward to graduation and
            promotion ceremonies.

President Harper:
       •      Announced that at the present time, preliminary voting results indicate that 61.6%
              of the absentee ballots are in favor of Union City’s Measure K.

Superintendent Pat Jaurequi:
       •      Announced that the process for filling administrator vacancies is continuing. Two
              recommendations for approval are on tonight’s Consent Agenda - Judy
              Billingsley as principal of Logan High School and Joe Feldman as the Director of
              Secondary Education.
       •      Reported that School Services of California that will assist in the search for a new
              Chief Business Officer.

Approval of Consent Agenda Items
Member Stringer pulled item #25, Revision of Board Policy #I-6142.1, Comprehensive Sex
Education and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education, First Reading, and requested information from
staff regarding classroom curriculum.

Member Estes pulled item #12, Personnel Actions for clarification of the recommendation for the
principal of James Logan High School. Following discussion, this item remained on the list of
consent agenda items.
