 Romeo and Juliet Character Sketch
          Essay /107
Goal
Write a character sketch essay for one of the main characters from Romeo and
Juliet.

Step 1 Characters
Choose one of the main characters from Romeo and Juliet.

_________________________

Step 2 Brainstorm
Brainstorm all of the character traits that your chosen character has
demonstrated throughout the play along with your reasoning for each choice.

Step 3 Connotation
Using the context of the play, label each character trait in your brainstorm
according to whether it has positive (+) or negative (-) connotation attached to
it. For example, most students will argue that Romeo’s overdramatic nature is
a negative personality trait.
Step 4 Choices
Select three distinguishable traits from your brainstorm. The traits you choose
and the order you place them in should reflect one of the patterns you learned
about in your notes. You may group similar traits into three distinguishable
groups, therefore, giving you greater word choice in your paragraphs. For
example, loving and caring are too closely related to be in separate paragraphs.

2. _________________________
3. _________________________
Step 5 Thesis
Write your thesis statement. It should include the main topic as well as the 3
points that you have chosen to use as support.

Step 6 Summary Statement
Write your summary statement. It should start with a transition word and
restate your thesis statement.

Remember that your summary statement must have the same meaning
as your thesis statement but use different words!

Step 7 SEXY Paragraphs Outline/Web
Now that you have chosen your three points and have focused your essay with
your thesis statement, you need to complete the organizer of your choice in
point form for each of these points.

Each paragraph should identify a trait (S), explain in your own words some of
the evidence of this trait (E), provide a specific example in the form of a quote
from the play of when the character is demonstrating this trait (X), and link
this trait back to your main point about the character (Y).
