Goal Setting Lesson Plans – Part 1A (Level 1 only)

Objective 3: Students will set three English text related goals for the term.

Grammar Focus: possessive, to be verb, pluse infinititve

MATERIALS NEEDED: Visuals from Part 1, Goals Checklist handout, My Term Goals handout.

TIME NEEDED: (30-60 minutes)

Introduction:

   1. Using the visuals from Part 1, review what the goals of the people in the visuals, asking pairs of
students to explain to each other what the goals are.

Presentation 1: Identifying text related goals

   1. Tell students they are going to make goals for this term (show calendar and book) to explain
where it is coming from. Pass out Goals Checklist handout.
        a. Point to first picture, asking students if they know any words to describe the picture. Mime
or use realia to explain pictures. Write words on the board. Continue through the
worksheet, reading each goal after explanation.
        b. Model to students that they can only choose 3 goals, using overhead as an example for
fictional student – showing students that, for example you know how to fill out a form
already so you don’t want that as a goal, but perhaps you need the goal with feelings.
        c. Show students where they have a chance to draw/write a goal of their own. Perhaps
someone works in a kitchen and needs to know kitchen vocabulary. Draw and write in a
possible different goal for fictional students.

Practice:

   1. Have students check 3 goals from Goals Checklist handout or fill in blank choice.

Comprehension Check:

   1. Have students share their goals with a partner and then as a class. (If you want these to be class goals
make a chart on the board and do a tally of students answers. As a class, you can vote on what 3 goals, in
addition to other things covered in the term, you will meet.)

Application:

   1. Pass out My Term Goals worksheet. Model how to transfer goals from checklist to worksheet.
Have students circle the days they come to class. Have students transfer goals and then share
them with a partner. Students should put worksheet with Attendance goals in notebook.
