              SPI FOR CITRIX
              XENSERVER
The ultimate management solution for Citrix
              environments

SPI for Citrix XenServer provides central management point for XenServer
environment, integrated in industry-standard HP Operations Manager.
Without the need of dedicated XenServer management tools, IT organizations
can monitor physical and virtual XenServer performance, capacity,
configuration, and topology, thus leveraging their operations personnel,
processes, and procedures that are already in place.

        1. Executive Summary

Organizations rely on their computing infrastructure to provide a broad array of services. To
meet demand to deploy, maintain, and grow these services, IT organizations must continue to
add computing capacity. However, as a consequence of purchasing more and more servers,
organizations face a growing server sprawl that presents challenges that include:

              • Rising costs. In addition to spending a growing amount of money purchasing a growing
number of new and updated servers, organizations face growing costs for power, cooling,
network infrastructure, storage infrastructure, server administration, data center
                     upgrades and new data centers.
              • Decreasing manageability. Managing servers becomes increasingly difficult as the
number of servers grows. Adding to that challenge is the heterogeneous mix of hardware
models, vendors, operating systems and configurations that IT departments need to
                     support.
              • Decreasing efficiency. As server sprawl increases, IT organizations are forced to spend an
increasing amount of time on reactive tasks such as server provisioning, configuration,
                     monitoring and maintenance.

In short, the need to provide new and upgraded services has brought organizations face-to-
face with the limitations of their current data center infrastructure.

SPI for Citrix XenServer seamlessly integrates Citrix XenServer and HP Operations Manager. It
allows you to perform proactive monitoring, rapid problem solving, and business minded
service management of your systems. Additionally, SPI for Citrix XenServer is flexible, easy to
use, and requires minimum end-user configuration. Therefore, while you concentrate on your
customers and business, SPI for Citrix XenServer will focus on your Citrix XenServer
              infrastructure.

                                     DETECTING AND SOLVING ISSUES

                                     SPI for Citrix XenServer Policies

SPI for Citrix XenServer offers advanced features for detecting and resolving issues in your
Citrix environment. SPI for Citrix XenServer policies enable you to define complex rules and
instructions for monitoring different systems and services. Policies (on the Windows
Management server) or templates (on the UNIX Management server) are instructions for HP
Operations agents that monitor your Citrix environment. When an issue is detected, a
message is sent to the HP Operations console.

In addition, you can define automated actions to be performed upon detecting a specific
issue, or include instructions for operators as part of the message. Every policy can start
automatic or operator initiated action when the issue is detected. You can check which
actions were launched when the issue was detected, and check the action outcome in the
                                     message annotation.

Some of the functionalities of the SPI for Citrix XenServer policies are:

                                     • Monitor host, VM states and other infrastructure elements status
                                     • Monitor violation of CPU, memory, network and storage utilization thresholds
                                     • Monitor pool configuration and VM provisioning
                                     • Check XenServer environment and update service tree
                                     • Collect performance data

                            7 spi-info@hermes-softlab.com http://www.hermes-softlab.com/products/SPI/citrix.html

                                            • Monitor XenServer licensing

SPI for Citrix XenServer policies can be defined and modified in the GUI editor.

Example: Using SPI for Citrix XenServer Policies to Detect and Resolve Issues

This example shows how issues can be detected and resolved using the SPI for Citrix
XenServer policies. Policies define what, how, and when is monitored in your Citrix
environment. When an issue is detected (for example, virtual machine used all of its
memory), a message is sent to the HP Operations console.

The fastest way for operator to respond is using service tree. By selecting
critical object’s context menu it is possible to launch appropriate tool for
problem resolution, in this case he can increase virtual machine’s memory
                                    size.

                         Figure 6

                       resolution

By allocating additional memory, the next time the VM memory utilization threshold will not
be met and the policy monitor will automatically acknowledge message in the HP Console.

Every policy can start automatic or operator initiated action when an issue is detected. You
can define actions that can be performed automatically by the system. When automated or
operator initiated action successfully resolves the issue, the message is acknowledged and
saved. If an automated or operator initiated action fails to resolve the issue, the operators are
                                    notified.

MONITORING AND MANAGING YOUR CITRIX ENVIRONMENT

                                        REPRESENTING COLLECTED PERFORMANCE DATA

Collected system performance data can be represented in two ways:

                                        • using SPI for Citrix XenServer graphs
                                        • using SPI for Citrix XenServer web-based reports

                                        SPI for Citrix XenServer Graphs

SPI for Citrix XenServer is integrated with two HP Operations performance agents: coda and
MeasureWare agents. These agents collect and store system performance data in your Citrix
XenServer environment. To represent collected performance data in graphs, you can use HP
Performance Manager. SPI for Citrix XenServer Graphs show specific metrics and how these
metrics varied in a given time interval.

SPI for Citrix XenServer offers approximately 20 graphs, to list only a few:

                                        • Number of running/powered off/suspended VMs (by pool or by host)
                                        • Breakdown of pool’s VM/host states
                                        • CPU utilization for VM/Host
                                        • Free/total memory size for VM/Host
                                        • Storage repository physical/virtual free space

SPI for Citrix XenServer Web-Based Reports

SPI for Citrix XenServer also offers reporting functionality, where collected performance data
can be represented in web-based reports. SPI for Citrix XenServer integrates HP Reporter.
Web-based reports are prepared using Crystal Report.

SPI for Citrix XenServer provides more than 40 reports, for example:

                                           • Pool reports
The reports present changes in number of hosts and virtual machines in every possible
state, effectively tracking administrative operations in Citrix XenServer environment.
Second part of reports facilities identification of pool significance.

                                           • Host reports
The reports show top 10 hosts with the highest average CPU and memory utilization. It is
possible to identify hosts in need for additional resources or the ones having spare
resources. Together with report sorting hosts by most/least residing VMs, it is possible to
quickly find candidates for possible VM migration.

WHITE PAPER SPI for Citrix XenServer/ April 2009

                          • VM reports
The reports show top 10 virtual machines with the highest average CPU and memory
utilization. It is easy to identify VMs with extensive workloads.

                          • Storage reports
The reports provide detailed storage repositories information. Identifying storage
repositories with highest utilization enables timely measures and prevention of whole
range of failures (VDI creation, provisioning failure, prevents VM suspending, etc.)

         4. The Bottom Line

By understanding which parts of Citrix XenServer environment comprise a service, together
with the performance characteristics, IT professionals can review and manage system
problems before any service levels deteriorate to the point where business decisions are
affected. Consequently, it is important to work with software that both acknowledges service
management concepts and works within those service management guidelines to measure,
report, and track events in order to monitor and correct potential problem areas.

SPI for Citrix XenServer is a SMART Plug-In that seamlessly integrates into existing HP
Software installations, extending their functionality to the Citrix XenServer solution.

SPI for Citrix XenServer is a virtualization management solution. It provides pro-active
monitoring capabilities within the framework of virtualization management, and allows IT
staff to make their virtualization platforms far more robust and to detect end-to-end
customer issues while drilling-down to the elements that may be the cause of problems. SPI
for Citrix XenServer advances reliability and manageability of virtualization infrastructure,
providing optimal detection and resolving of potential workload bottlenecks, thus efficiently
preventing system downtimes. By doing this, SPI for Citrix XenServer allows end users to
become aware of problems long before they occur, and long before they affect any important
              business issues.
