The Galbani Corteolona and Casale Cremasco case study: Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and Hydro Optic Disinfection The purpose of the application A large food company in Italy, known for the quality and safety of its products chose Atlantium to guarantee and monitor the quality of the water used in its industrial processes. The purpose of the installation was to act as a barrier ("Firewall") at the plant inlet water entrance to protect the plant from the possibility of source contamination and to serve as protection for water used in the production process of the Mozzarella in Corteolona and Casale Cremasco sites. The effectiveness of HOD in inactivating the bacteria was demonstrated by high product quality and by prevention of bio-fouling of pipes and process pathways. System conditions Water flow-rate ranges from 40m3/h to 450m3/h in Corteolona Water flow-rate up to 70m3/h in Casala Cremasco UVT: 96% or higher Target Bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa: Bacteria from the Pseudomonas species are part of the bio-fouling bacteria group and are typical flora in all water pipeline systems in the food industry, beverage industry, dairy industry, and municipal water systems. The bacteria appear in two major forms: suspended in the water and as bio-film on pipeline surfaces. The bio-fouling bacteria usually release from the pipeline surface in cluster form and at unpredictable times. The Pseudomonas species bacteria are human pathogens and also cause food and beverage product spoilage. In addition, some of these bacteria species are resistant to chlorine in normal concentrations. The HOD system The HOD-system showed substantially higher reductions than 5 log. Hydro Optic Disinfection Technology showed reliability and dependability throughout the evaluation and testing processes. It reduces the Pseudomonas Aeruginosa count, as well as >5 log of bio-fouling bacteria to <10 CFU in 500 ml for all cases and <1 CFU in 500 ml in most cases. Three units of model R200DL were installed. Atlantium and Galbani worked together to custom software to control the flow through the systems and enable homogenous disinfection. Casala Cremasco - Product protection The HOD model R100DL module was installed to protect the water used in the Mozzarella line production. The system was installed at the entrance to the production room and controlled from the control room on a remote basis.
