September / October 2008 Official Publication of the Sailboat Bend Civic Association NEXT Civic Association General Meeting in a NEW LOCATION ! 251 SW 11Ave. (Palm Avenue) Third Monday each month Broward Trust to Move Historic Annie Beck House On Sunday, July 27th, starting at 8AM, an 82 year old craftsman style bungalow was moved from 310 SE 11th Avenue in downtown Fort Lauderdale to Middle River Terrace Park. Russell Building Movers, Miami, will carefully guide the fragile structure on its journey along Las Olas Boulevard, Federal Highway, NE 15th Avenue and NE 13th Street to its new home at 1379 North Dixie Highway. A tractor will pull a 45-ton “tricycle” consisting of a steel beam platform resting on three dollies. Each dolly will have two axles with 8 wheels, one in front and two behind for stability. Several crews will remove and replace overhead lines, wires and cables to allow the house to proceed. The move will probably take at least four hours. Known locally as the “Annie Beck House,” this second escape from demolition is credited to the patience and generosity of current owner Mrs. Diana Heileman. She purchased the choice property near the New River to build a house for her family but could not bring herself to tear it down. The bungalow has become the object of affection for an entire community. Word that Heileman was willing to donate it reached the son of a previous owner. Shelby Grant Smith III approached the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation which he knew had kept other venerable Lauderdale properties from demolition—the Lauderdale Beach Hotel (now part of Las Olas Beach Club) and the old Escape Hotel (also known as Tiffany House). Hesitant at first because of the doubly daunting task of finding an available site and raising funds to restore it, Trust directors eventually agreed that it was a perfect fit for the non-profit corporation’s stated mission: to preserve significant Broward County architecture. They swallowed hard and decided to accept the gift with all its conditions and financial responsibilities. The trust’s yearlong search for a workable site came to the attention of the Middle River Terrace Neighborhood Association. They concluded that a building the residents could share with other non-profit groups for community activities would bring an energetic presence to their new park. After months of discussion, agreement was reached and the trust accepted the neighborhood’s invitation to provide a permanent home in the park for the Annie Beck House. On January 8, 2008, Fort Lauderdale city commissioners approved the relocation. When brought to code and restored by the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation under the supervision of the Tamara Peacock Company, the Annie Beck Education Center will serve non-profit conservation and preservation groups such as garden clubs, landscape architects, and birding groups as well as the Middle River Terrace Neighborhood Association and the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation. The trust will manage the center’s activities which will be available to qualifying nonprofit groups for special events. Public hearings are scheduled this summer to re-zone the land parcels as a park district. The house has been recommended for historic designation by the Fort Lauderdale Historic Preservation Board. A vote by the city commission on this recommendation is expected later this year at which time the Annie Beck House will become the first historic house in a Fort Lauderdale park. The Alfred John “Doc” and Annie Beck house, which is presently located on the Himmarshee Canal, is a traditional craftsman bungalow with a small front facing gable end porch. Built in 1916 of Dade County pine, it remained at 334 East Las Olas Boulevard until August of 1977, when the property owner, First Broward Federal, decided to build a drive-in bank on the lot. Mrs. Beck, who was then 81, arranged for the house to be moved to the 11th Avenue location where she lived until she passed away in 1985 at age 89. continued on page 4 All Welcome! Summer was still a busy time for the Sailboat Bend Civic Association/SBCA Board. There was still much activity during the hot days of July & August, especially concerning the pending fate of the Kennedy Homes. There were searches (many times actually researching) of the City & County records to learn of the history of this project, discussions with City Commissioners and registering of the Kennedy Homes on the Florida Registry of Historic Places. Being initiated in the late 30s, the homes were built as one of the first federal housing projects. Proudly, some of our city and neighborhood residents were former inhabitants of these homes. Yes, these homes are historic buildings in our neighborhood. The SBCA Development Review Committee (under the leadership of Alysa Plummer) has been diligent in monitoring the progress of the pending plans being developed by the Ft. Lauderdale Housing Authority. The pending plans call for demolition of all but one of them. Of course, the review committee and SBCA Board are strongly opposed. In the 90 degree heat, Paul Boggess, Erica Lowther and Hilda Velez represented our neighborhood at the Policemen & Firemen Appreciation Night in Holiday Park on August 5th (this was also day of the National Crime Night Out). Our neighborhood plantings (foot of the 7th Avenue bridge and two traffic out-pockets in the 700 block of Las Olas Blvd) have faired well during this growing season. Also the new plantings around our neighborhood signs have been doing well. Thanks to the “green team” (Paul Boggess, Hilda Velez, Randy Swenson and including myself) for their efforts. The historic Fire Station is about to open (check the article in this newsletter – Welcome…the Historic Fire Station) and become an active part of our community. We are in need of some good leaders and helpers to plan for the revival of our Home & Garden Tour of Historic Homes. There are plenty of opportunities to help our neighborhood. We all know that these are busy times, but volunteering is greatly appreciated. To know of the opportunities and current progress of ongoing efforts, please check the yahoo message board (Sailboat-bend@yahoogroups.com) and attend the monthly meetings. The restoration of the historic fire station is close to being completed. As is plainly visible from the outside, there have been many changes – new walkways, landscaping, new windows & roof and a fresh coat of paint. If you are impressed with this, wait till you see the insides of the building. The assignmentmeeting room and kitchen have been restored to their 1920-30’s with period utilities and furniture. The captain’s and firemen’s sleeping rooms are models of the period and contain historic Ft. Lauderdale memorabilia. The bay areas now have two historic fire engines (yes, both of them are in working condition) and other historic apparatus. The Ft. Lauderdale obelisk honoring firemen who have given their lives in service is being relocated to the fire station; a memorial circle surrounds it to give an opportunity for remembrance. The fire station will serve as a museum and fire safety education center. This newsletter may reach your hands before the annual City 9-11 event, so if it does, plan on being at the fire station as it serves again as the site of the City’s 9-11 Memorial Dedication. A formal opening of the fire station will be held most likely in October. Keep checking the yahoogroup (Sailboat-bend@yahoogroups.com) for announcements. Please Recycle Trash Pickup Trash carts are picked up every Wednesday and Saturday Yard waste carts are picked up every Wednesday. Your carts may be placed curbside no more than 12 hours before or after pickup and must be stored out of view from the street or you will be fined. Call 954-828-0770 for more info. A charter member of the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club, he was treasurer of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church for 28 years, and was vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce and business manager for the Tarpons, the semi-pro baseball team. Doc Beck died in 1962. Born near Ocala in 1896, Annie Atkinson Beck was co-founder of Fort Lauderdale’s first garden club as well as the Federated Garden Club Circles. She was president of the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club and became a nationally accredited flower show judge. She helped establish the garden club’s library, which was named after her, and was one of the founding members of the 1919 Study Club, which is still in existence. After the 1926 hurricane, Mrs. Beck and the garden club led a community-wide effort to re-landscape the devastated town. She planted a yellow trumpet tree (tabebuia) in her front yard that became a local landmark. Later the city planted yellow tabs in a park located on Victoria Park Road in her honor. The friendship between Doc Beck and another prominent pharmacist, Shelby Grant Smith Sr. (Smith Drug Stores) led Mrs. Beck to sell the bungalow in 1984 to Smith’s son, realtor and photographer Shelby Grant Smith Jr. With a view to selling it himself, Smith immediately made extensive restorations. However, according to the Fort Lauderdale News on 1/24/85, “His efforts were designed to produce a charming house for sale. But Smith, a realtor, fell in love with the finished product and decided to call it home and studio. His work earned him a bronze plaque as a winner of one of the city’s seventh annual Community Appearance Awards.” The plaque and porch swing can still be seen on the front porch. THE NEW SITE Middle River Terrace residents are proud of their weekend-afterweekend of volunteer sweat and toil to clean up roughly four acres of drug-infested houses and heaps of trash and garbage, prior to the city’s acquisition of the land. “In the 1950s and 1960s a rare palm and orchid nursery had been replaced by apartment buildings that had become one of the worst drug problems in the city,” says neighborhood president and former city commissioner Tim Smith. Starting in 1997 and continuing through 1998, Fort Lauderdale commissioners approved acquisition of several parcels. Construction of a small pavilion and finishing work on the grounds were completed in the summer of 2000. Comments Broward Trust president Diane Smart, “When the Trust formed in 2002, it had a vision: to help make Broward a county that believes in preserving its historical resources. The gift from Mrs. Heileman, the cooperation of the City of Fort Lauderdale, the hospitality of the neighborhood, the grant approvals from the Broward County Historical Commission and the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, perfectly illustrate our confidence in this vision.” For information contact: Warren Adams, Executive Director, Broward Trust for Historic Preservation 954/522-1606 OR Susan Gillis, member of the Board of Directors 954/612-1297 Join the Sailboat Bend Civic Association All Sailboat Bend residents (renters and owners) are privy to the information at the Civic Association Meetings which are held on the 3rd Monday of each Month. A September / October 2008 7 September / October 2008 Gore Nursery Notes Hello to September. It’s the beginning of our change in the weather. The early part of this month is still what I call “high summer.” By the end of the month our temperatures, particularly at night, will be getting more reasonable. The rainfall in September is anyone’s guess. Remember, as it cools off our plants can go longer between watering. This month I would like to talk about fertilization in South Florida. One of our most important jobs in September is to fertilize our plants. The soil has been depleted of its plant nutrients, by all the past months rains, making fertilizer a must. Fertilizer may come in liquid or dry form. All plant foods are absorbed in the liquid state. The advantage of a liquid fertilizer is quicker absorption and possibly an easier application. The disadvantage is that the fertilizer is used up more quickly and therefore requires more frequent applications. Pick the fertilizer type that suits your habits and the time you have to garden. Three types of fertilizer are: LIQUID-mix with water and use every 7 to 14 days on roots and leaves. GRANULAR-spread on top of soil and lasts 30 to 90 days, activated by water and temperature. SLOW RELEASE- more costly but lasts 3 months to 1 year and is activated by water and temperature and may be incorporated in the soil or placed above ground. The major problem that our customers are concerned about is still Ficus whitefly. Ficus whitefly is defoliating our ficus shrubs and trees. Please come in and talk to us so we can help you. There are quite a few people that are knocking on doors and telling the home owner they can fix the problem. Make sure they are licensed and insured to do the spraying for you. Also please ask to see the chemical they are using to make sure you are buying the right chemical for your problem. Have them write the chemical down on their bill in case you have any future questions. In anticipation of our becoming a green space neighborhood park, please stop in for our end of summer SALE, where most if not all of our stock will be on SALE. Thanks again, Bob and Fred.
