Gary M. Sumers is a Senior Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer in the Real Estate group. Since joining Blackstone in 1995, Mr. Sumers’ day-to-day activities include heading Blackstone Real Estate Advisors’ (BREA) Strategic Asset Management Group, oversight of all financial reporting activities and responsibility for the property disposition activities. Over the last several years, Mr. Sumers has been involved in over $3.5 billion of property dispositions, including the Hodges Industrial Portfolio, Bethesda Metro Center, 120 Broadway, Colonie Center, Southridge Mall, and the Concordia Properties. Mr. Sumers has also played a key role in completing numerous property financings, including the $620 million cross-border securitized loan in conjunction with BREA’s acquisition of the Savoy Group. He has also overseen the restructuring of debt positions acquired by BREA, including the $93 million loan for the Riverfront Office Buildings in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is also a member of the Blackstone Real Estate Investment Committee. Before joining Blackstone, Mr. Sumers was Chief Operating Officer of General Growth Properties, one of the largest publicly traded regional mall REITs in the U.S. Prior to joining General Growth Properties, Mr. Sumers spent 11 years at JMB Institutional Realty Corporation, where he was the Managing Director in charge of asset management for a portfolio of over $4 billion in real estate assets. Mr. Sumers began his career practicing real estate law in Chicago. Mr. Sumers graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Washington University in St. Louis, received his law degree from Northwestern University and attended the London School of Economics.
