August 1, 2005 Greetings Compatriots, Our Flag Day Luncheon turned out to be a picnic type setting at Mount Echo Park shelter house with a view of the Cincinnati Skyline. Those who attended found out about the sister to “Old Glory”. Compatriot John Simmon’s daughter Johnna to the drum beat by Compatriot Randy Krueger posted the National Colors. The Cincinnati Chapter Nolan Carson Color Guard marched in the Blue Ash Memorial Day Parade. The part that earned them a very well done was it rained the entire way. I was lucky this year I towed the trailer with SAR, DAR, and C.A.R. members. Other Color Guard activities included Cincinnati Chapter DAR Flag Day Luncheon and the Memorial Service at National Congress in Louisville, Kentucky. John Simmons and I posted colors for DAR Chapters John Reily Fairfield, OH, Colonel Jonathan Bayard Smith Middletown, OH and Caroline Scott Oxford, OH at their Flag Day Luncheon. Valerie and I also displayed and talked about each flag in the Cincinnati Chapter Captain Miller Collection at Symmes Tavern on the Green Fairfield, OH.

DID THE BIBLE INFLUENCE THE WRITING OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES? This is the question examined on a recent television documentary produced by Coral Ridge Ministries – One Nation Under God. The documentary offers evidence for America’s Christian Founding. The special opens in the Bruton Parish Church, Williamsburg, Virginia where George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry worshipped on a weekly basis. It takes the viewer to Yorktown, Mount Vernon and the Library of Congress. Dr. D. James Kennedy of the Coral Ridge Hour notes that it was Patrick Henry who declared in his “Give me liberty or give me death” speech that “there is a just God who presides over the destiny of nations.” Dr. James H. Hutson, Head of the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress said records show that George Washington regularly attended worship services and church vestry meetings. Dr. Donald Lutz, a professor of political philosophy at the University of Houston, has examined some 15,000 documents written during America’s founding era. He found that a third of the quotations in those documents were from the Bible. Dr. Lutz said “Deuteronomy is cited more than John Locke or anyone else.” Dr. Peter Marshall’s research showed that the 1639 Fundamental Orders of Connecticut was a part of the bloodline of the United States Constitution. George Washington, President of the Constitutional Convention, ordered that copies of the Connecticut Constitution be given to each delegate. Peter Marshall explained why Washington did so, “because it was so powerfully done, so rooted in Holy Scripture, in the Word of God, such an effective document that Washington wanted that to be a reference work for the new federal Constitution.” Mary Thompson, a research specialist at Mount Vernon said “what I found very early on was that Washington was a man who believed that God took an active part in the founding of the United States, a man who believed that God took an active interest in people’s lives, and that the way a person behaved in reference to God could, and would influence how God related to that person. A VHS or DVD copy of the program can be ordered from Coral Ridge Ministries (1-800-9887884 or e-mail letters@coralridge.org). Their website is www.coralridge.org.

OHIO JOINS PENNSYLVANIA IN PATRIOT DUAL DEDICATION CEREMONIES
On Memorial Day Ohio joined Pennsylvania in a dual ceremony in Freeport, Pennsylvania dedicating a new VA headstone and Patriot Grave Marker -- and Marker at the site of a Blockhouse -- both in honor of Patriot Capt. John Craig, who built the Blockhouse in 1792 and was its Commander. Capt. Craig, with his two brothers and father fought in the battles of Princeton and Trenton, New Jersey in 1776 under General George Washington. Taking a prominent part in the ceremony was a Color Guard comprised of Compatriots from the Ohio and Pennsylvania Societies SAR, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, 78th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Company F Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Thanks are extended to the SAR Color Guard members Larry Perkins and George Livingston from the Ebenezer Zane Chapter of the Ohio Society and to Gary Timmons and Ronald Malmgren from the George Washington Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society, who graciously traveled to Freeport to participate in this historic event. Thanks is also extended to Rufus Putnam Chapter President Keith Kaufman and his wife June for attending. Keith was colorful in his Patrick Henry clothes and mingled with the attendees, telling them about the man he was depicting. The Master of Ceremonies was Don Collar, President of Freeport Area Historical Society, who gave a warm welcome to the 100 plus attendees who came out with umbrellas on this rainy day. Other speakers were a representative of the 78th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Company F, a representative from the Freeport Area Historical Society, and Charles G. Edwards, Historian and Publicity Chairman of the Ohio Society and Revolutionary War Graves Chairman of the Cincinnati Chapter SAR. Compatriot Edwards spoke on Capt. Announcements: >The Nominating Committee is now considering candidates for our Cincinnati Chapter 2006 Officers and Board of Management. Recommendations should be sent to Martin Greene, Nominating Committee Chairman. >SAR Congress Attendance Certificate -- I recently became aware, through PG McCarl, of this Certificate – and received mine at the 2005 NSSAR Congress in Louisville. Some of you members are probably eligible and not aware of the Certificate. It is a Certificate of Recognition for ten (10) years of attending the NSSAR Annual Congress. The ten (10) years do not have to be consecutive. The responsibility for maintaining his own attendance records lies with the Compatriot. That record can be verified by National Headquarters for the award of the Certificate. Members who qualify for this Certificate should provide their names and attendance records to the Executive Director. After verification, the Certificate can be awarded at a Congress. Charles Edwards
Gentlemen: Good News! Congress has completed work on the Interior Appropriations Bill and sent it to the President for his signature. The legislation includes $200,000 for the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Act sponsored by Senators Hillary Clinton of New York and John Warner of Virginia. That Act was approved by the Senate last year, but needed funding, which it now has. Compatriots from throughout the country were quick to jump on the band wagon and urge their senators to pass this legislation last year. We responded again this year when work began on the appropriations. You'll be happy to know that in addition to including the funds for the National Park Service to develop programs to commemorate the remaining 225th anniversaries of battles and events of the Revolutionary War, the funding measure encourages funding at a similar level for the next fiscal year as we move into 2006 and the 225th Anniversary programs for the Battles of Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse and Yorktown. I would suggest that a word of thanks to Senators Clinton and Warner on passage of their legislation would be in order as well as message of congratulations on receiving the necessary funding to put the program in motion. An email would work just fine. Senator Clinton: senator@clinton.senate.gov Senator Warner: senator@warner.senate.gov Semper Fi - Bob Bowen, Chairman National Revolutionary War (225th Anniversary) Committee
