From the Commodore: The Seabirds have finally graduated to the level of using the internet for most of our communication. Since 95% of the members have e-mail access and a full e-mail roster in their pcs, it is no longer necessary for Pat & Margo Ciresi to be the hub of distribution for our communication. We ask that if you have not loaded the Seabird roster onto your contact list, take some time to do that so you can distribute your messages directly. You will find a complete listing of email addresses in your roster. If you have a change in any contact information, please send it to Donna Conley, Membership Chair, so she can keep our records updated. Also, remember to send it to the Scuttlebutt Editor so it can be included in the newsletter. A huge thank you to Pat & Margo for all their hard work over the last several years in making sure we were kept informed of the comings and goings of our members. Your time and efforts have not gone unnoticed and you are greatly appreciated by us all! Don’t forget, get busy and update your address books! Commodore Craig Leonard

Wow…what a great job our Website Coordinator John Wurster is doing! If you haven’t taken the time to log onto our website, you are really missing out. Thank you Johnny!!! Now…as if he isn’t working hard enough…our WebMaster John has offered to help out Glenda with the Seabird photo project. Since John enjoys working on the website and has more time to devote to this project, Glenda most appreciates his generous offer. John is going to scan all of the old photos onto discs for the club and then will post the photos in the archive section of the website so our club history will be available for all to view. We have several photos already from members ready to go and would love to have as many as possible. Please bring your photos to either John or Glenda to the monthly meetings. Please make sure your photos & albums are marked so they can be returned. Also, Cruise Leaders, don’t forget to email John your cruise photos so they can be posted and the website can be kept current.

Seabird Yacht Club Monthly Meeting Minutes, June 14th, 2006
Commodore Craig Leonard called the June Seabirds meeting to order at 7:30 with 34 members in attendance. He had some very interesting facts about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that were previously unknown to most of us. We were pleased to welcome Bill Oppold and his wife Mike, guests of Tom and Donna Conley. We were also glad to see the return of guests of Richard and Beverly Duncan, Ralph and Janet Cripps (who recently fractured her ankle in three places). Donna Casey gave the Sunshine report of Birthdays and Anniversaries and wished a Happy Fathers Day to all the Seabird Dads. Donna also expressed all of our thoughts and prayers for Al and Elvie Baurley’s daughter who is battling cancer. Bob Hopwood gave a cruise report on upcoming cruises. The 50/50 drawing for $65 was won by Janet Cripps (that could buy a little pain relief). Cynthia Martin had a Fathers Day game –match photos of Seabird men and photos of their fathers. Jo Wurster won with a score of 8 out of 10. Tom and Donna Conley won the drawing for 2 free drinks by having their guest draw the name of their boat “Breakaway” out of the bowl! Dick Docen brought our rather brief meeting of an hour and 20 minutes to a close with another classic joke. Your Secretary, Marguerite Cave

Friday, June 16 This Friday started off like any other day, with one exception, it was a start to yet another anticipated Seabird Cruise. Maule Lake in North Miami Beach was our cruise destination this morning. We shoved off of our Lighthouse Point dock at 9:00 AM to make the 9:15 AM Hillsboro Inlet bridge opening. We where greeted at the sea buoy with SE winds gently blowing at a comfortable 10 knots with seas less than 2 feet. A pleasant passage was made to Port Everglades Inlet where we entered and continued our journey south down the ICW. Maule Lake was created in the early 1900's after it was discovered that the rock coming out of that area had qualities that made it ideal for road building. Many of the lakes in the area are man made and where used for that purpose. The area now known as North Miami Beach where Maule Lake sits was originally known as Fulford-By-The-Sea. Captain William Fulford was on Guard patrol along the Atlantic side of the Florida Peninsula during the Spanish-American war. In 1881 he explored Bog Snake Creek, now known as the Oleta River, and decided to settle in and was given 160 acres of land under the homestead act. After crossing Dumbfoundling Bay we entered the canal that brings you into our destination, Maule Lake. Noon time brought us along-side our cruise leaders, Tom and Donna Conley aboard "Breakaway". We where joined for lunch aboard Boomerang by a couple of nice friends of the Conley's who dinked over from a Maule Lake Condo. Shortly after lunch we spotted the third of our four cruisers entering Maule Lake, Don and Cynthia Martin, aboard "Sea Lion". After getting settled in Bob and Tom went fishing along the banks of the tranquil Oleta River while Don stayed and entertained Cathie, Donna and Cynthia. As luck would have it, Bob and Tom didn't catch any fish and Don wasn't very entertaining but we where visited by a Mother Manatee and her cub while drifting along the riverbanks. 5:30 brought our last boat, Dave and Mary Jane Board. "Lucky Seven" lassoed a line to the Martin's boat and completed the cruiser's for the weekend raft-up. Shortly thereafter all joined together on Boomerang for cocktails and 'hors d'oeuvres d' Martin. The Boomerang Grill was fired up and good 'ole hamburgers and cheeseburgers where prepared and dinner was had in the comfy confines of the Breakaway cabin. Conversations continued into the late night and one by one the well-traveled Seabirds retired to the safety and security of the Conley's hook, attached by chain to Breakaway. Bob Desjean, Boomerang, Reporting Saturday, June 17th All aboard! Last call for the dingy ride around Maul Lake and around to the Intracoastal. We all took a tour of the beautiful scenery and checked out all the sunken boats, probably due to Hurricane Wilma. Our four adventurous captains located PF Chang's Restaurant and we all headed there for a great lunch. There are some terrific restaurants close to Maul Lake which can be gotten to by dingy. The girls played an exciting game of Train Dominoes in the afternoon, while most of the Captains took naps. Donna Conley, our cruise leader organized a chili bake off for that evening and mixed up a batch of her famous Margaritas to go with the chili. Cathy Desjean took first place with her winning Steak Chili and won a bottle of Jose Quervo. Mary Jane Board and Cynthia Martin tied for second and third places. Thank you Donna and Tom for a fabulous, fun filled weekend. Cynthia & Don Martin, Sea Lion, Reporting Sunday, June 18th Although there were some overnight showers, Sunday morning dawned clear and pleasant, with a light, cooling breeze. On deck, there was no sign of the previous night’s revelry. An hour or two after dawn, a few Seabirds began to appear, coffee mugs in hand, to consider the coming day with a somewhat squinty-eyed stare. The odor of bacon was soon added to that of coffee, followed by captains & their mates gathering on “Breakaway” for breakfast. Ahh, the Seabird diet: coffee, bacon, eggs in various forms, pastry, fruits and juices, all enjoyed with good friends in air conditioned comfort. There were a few comments on the after effects of the Saturday night chili cook-off, but nary a single flutterblast was heard. After breakfast, all present confirmed their allegiance to the Rafter’s Creed; “What happens on the raft, stays on the raft,” and about 10:30 we broke up the raft to follow our various courses to home ports.
