President’s Message
Are you ready to go to the polls and vote? I hope so; we should want to vote, not because we have to. It’s a privilege to live in America, the country that has so many freedoms. We need to stand up and be counted to keep her that way. Those on the ballot that need our support for the primary include the Presidential, U.S. Senate, County Commissioners, State Representatives in Districts 12 and 14. Manny Steele, incumbent in District 12, and Joni Cutler, incumbent in District 14, they need our votes. One of the objectives of Republican Women is to work for the election of Republican candidates. After the primaries are over, our candidates (some new, some incumbent) will need help in winning the office being sought. We need to be ready to help out where and when we can, however you can. I know each candidate will appreciate our support when we give generously to their campaigns in ways that best fits their needs.

Lincoln Day Update
The Minnehaha County Lincoln Day Dinner was a success. Thank You to everyone for all of your help. Our Silent Auction brought in $1,541 and a few gals under Marianne Goodis called businesses for the County Party and we shared in the revenue generated. They raised $1,220.75. Our expenses were $129.55, leaving us with $2,632.20. Our hats off to Michele McCarty and Marianne Goodis for their expertise on these projects.

Caring For America
We have finished our commitment to our VA platoon; they will be going home this month! Our last shipment included 2 boxes of "Roadhouse Chili" which I'm sure they'll enjoy! We have chosen to support "Operation Bug Out" through "Adopt a Platoon" for the months of June and July. We have 10 men we will be supporting with donations of: • Bug Spray/Wipes (non aerosol) • Eye drops • Cortisone (anti-itch) Cream • Sticky fly paper • Shorter, plastic fly swatters(to fit in the boxes) • Sunglasses • Suntan lotion. If we could have 10 of each that would be awesome! So far we've sent misting fans, medicated powder and lip balm (10 each). Let's keep our "sons" covered this summer! Also, we are still accepting "Operation Caring Hands" donations of: • Beanie babies • 8-pack crayons • Coloring books • Notebooks, pads • Pencils and pens • Any school-type item

If you can bring them to any of the meetings I will get them and make sure they get shipped to our contact in Iraq. Here is her latest:

70 Years of Service
In June, 2008, we celebrate the 70th year since NFRW was organized. It was born in a climate of defeat but grew in size and strength providing a way for women to help with the direction of our government. This was true when it was born and still is true for our current time. NFRW gives women an opportunity to Make A Difference alone or as a team.

Effort helps deployed troops
I have read with interest the Argus Leader stories on the Yankton woman coordinating the supplying of seeds to U.S. troops for distribution to the Iraqi people. It is in this spirit that I want to share the good news about a program our organization has participated in for the past four years. It is more important than ever Americans let U.S. troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan know they are not forgotten. Letters, cards and care packages sent to our troops serving far from home mean more to them than words can say. Your help is needed to ensure that we never forget those who serve on our behalf. AdoptaPlatoon is a national, nonprofit organization serving the U.S. military by providing a program for Americans to send support in the form of cards, letters and care packages to deployed U.S. soldiers. Families, civic groups, clubs, schools and businesses can participate. To learn how you can support our deployed troops, visit the AdoptaPlatoon Web site at www.adoptaplatoon.org. Obama And The Puppies
At a campaign stop, Obama encounters a man with some puppies. He asks the man what kind of puppies they are, and the man responds, "They're Democrat puppies." Obama thinks that is so great that the next day he brings Michelle to see these puppies for herself. He asks the man to tell his wife what kind of puppies they are. The man responds, "They're Republican puppies." Obama looks puzzled and says, "Yesterday, you told me they were Democrat puppies." The man smiles and says, "Yesterday, they were, today they have their eyes open!"

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent "Trust Fund" and put it into the General Fund so that Congress could spend it? A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate. Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) Withholding? A: The Democratic Party. Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security Annuities? A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the "tie-breaking" vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants? A: That's right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country and at age 65 began to receive Social Security Payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!

Interesting Social Security Facts Hillary’s campaign ad states that Republicans are trying to destroy Social Security. We should be reminded that:
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised: 1. That participation in the Program would be completely voluntary; it's only voluntary for members of the Senate and the House. 2. That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual income into the Program. 3. That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year. 4. That the money the participants put into the independent "Trust Fund" rather than into the General Operating Fund would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other government program. 5. That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income. Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and some us are now receiving a Social Security check each month -- we now find that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to

SDFRW Board Meeting
The SDFRW Board meeting will be held in Chamberlain on June 21st rather than Platte. They moved it because the State Republican Party Convention is at the same location on the 19th through the 21st. I will not be able to attend so if someone wants to go in my stead, let me know. We should also have a basket or item for the raffle. Saturday luncheon will be held with both groups and Senator John Thune will be the speaker. Anyone is welcome to attend the meetings.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
This article shows us how dedicated are the chosen few that guard the Tomb of the Unknown in Arlington Cemetery. 1. How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why? **21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary. 2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return walk and why? **21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1 3. Why are his gloves wet? **His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle. 4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time and if not, why not? **He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder. 5. How often are the guards changed?

**Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, and 365 days a year. 6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to? **For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb he must be between 5' 10” and 6' 2” tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30”. Other requirements of the Guard: They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot swear in public for the rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform {fighting} or the tomb in any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up the wreath pin. The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt. There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror. The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV. All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred. Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe E. Lewis {the boxer} and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, {the most decorated soldier of WWII} of Hollywood fame. Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty. “ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM” is inscribed on the tomb. In 2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington, DC, our US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC

evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment. They respectfully declined the offer, 'No way, Sir!' Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment; it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a service person. The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.

Did the tax cuts go on to the wealthy, like the Liberals claim?
Everyone should know and most will admit that tax cuts stimulate growth in the economy. The facts show that tax cuts put into place in the administrations of Kennedy, Reagan and Bush caused actual revenue to the government coffers to increase. The problem of ballooning deficits is caused by government spending and not the tax cuts. Share this information with those that oppose the tax cuts and don’t want them extended or made permanent. You may find these statistics enlightening and amazing. www.taxfoundation.org/publications/show/151.html Taxes under Clinton 1999 Single making 30K - tax $8,400 Single making 50K - tax $14,000 Single making 75K - tax $23,250 Married making 60K - tax $16,800 Married making 75K - tax $21,000 Married making 125K - tax $38,750 Taxes under Bush 2008 Single making 30K - tax $4,500 Single making 50K - tax $12,500 Single making 75K - tax $18,750 Married making 60K- tax $9,000 Married making 75K - tax $18,750 Married making 125K - tax $31,250

It is amazing how many people that fall into the categories above think Bush is cheating them and Bill Clinton was the greatest President ever. If Obama or Hillary are elected, they both say they will repeal the Bush tax cuts and a good portion of the people that fall into the categories above can't wait for it to happen. This is like the movie The Sting with Paul Newman; you scam somebody out of some money and they don't even know what happened.
