November 7, 2007 These pictures are highlights of our trip to Washington, D.C. We hope you get a glimpse of our wonderful experience.
Sam Smith, Noah Cartwright, Luis Sandoval, Taylor Kaufman, and Colin Bryant stood in front of Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.
Students and staff participated in a mock trial in Colonial Williamsburg. Our own Mr. Houser was placed on trial. Thank goodness he was found not guilty!
Molly Woodrum, Kayci Huber, and Savannah Beyer enjoyed a moment of relaxation on the battlefield in Yorktown.
Jordan Vogt took a minute to read letters and poems left, at the Vietnam Memorial, by family and friends of loved ones lost in the Vietnam War.

The 5th grade travelers posed in front of the White House on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Some of the kids wanted to practice walking in a straight line on second square in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. Luke, Brenna, Anna, Kelsee, and Jared, keep up the great work!
In the Capitol Building, some of us had the opportunity to meet lamas from Buton, an island in Indonesia. We are still researching these men to learn more about them.

Noah Houser, Brady Harris, Lauran Travis, and Milan Doan listened to the Honor Guard as he gave them instructions for presenting HLOE’s wreath for the Tomb of the Unknown Solider.
Everyone watched as HLOE’s wreath was placed on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. You could have heard a pin drop during this tear-jerking presentation.
What did the kids think about the trip? Well, when asked to complete the following statement, “I will never forget…” This is what they had to say.
*** "When Jared won the biggest splash and I got 3rd." Luke Higdon *** "The space simulator...when McKenzie was spinning us upside down. I will also never forget seeing President Bush and Vice President Chaney and Chaney waving us." -Anna Hack *** "I will never forget all the fun I had at Washington, DC and all the things we saw and all the friends I met in Washington, DC." - Jessica Files *** "I will never forget Thomas Jefferson's home." - Sam Smith *** “The things I learned and the friends I made in Washington, D.C.” – Alexis Jones *** “The Capitol Building because I want to be a senator one day.” - Peyton Smith *** “The fun we had on the Washington trip. It was weird how learning could be so fun.” - Paige Cursey *** “Seeing the Lincoln Memorial and standing right where Martin Luther King, Jr. said his “I Have a Dream” speech.” Kaci Oetjen *** “Going on this trip!!!!!!!!!” - Jeremy Hayden
We were on the go a lot, but we did unwind a little at Chuck E. Cheese. It was there that we discovered Mr. Ballard had an “unusual” talent. Not even Ami Patel could keep up with Mr. Ballard’s smooth moves and fancy footwork.

What we learned about D.C.
*** “The virtual tour of D.C. was better than I thought. We were able to see all of the memorials of many people. We even saw homes of many presidents.” – Dylan Weaver *** “We had lots of slide shows and virtual tours. It was cool and fun. That means it was awesome!” Garrett Dowell *** “It was fun getting online listening to podcasts. I was surprised to see all of this online like the mall, White House, Capitol, Washington Monument, and the Korean Memorial.” - Pedro Loredo *** “I must admit my favorite part of last week was when we watched National Treasure.” – Lindsay Fierro *** “ I must admit my favorite part of last week was when we built some monuments that are in Washington, D.C. including the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, Capitol Building, Washington Monument, and the Jefferson Memorial. They aren’t life size, but about the size of a desk. We got to paint them and make them look real. We made them out of cardboard.” – Darian Helton
The students worked on creating famous structures of Washington, D.C. These projects were fabulous works of art!
from the 5th Grade Teachers First and foremost we would like to take a moment to thank ALL of the 5th grade parents. Without your support we could not have made the Washington, D.C. trip possible. Thank you for enabling us to give our students this once and a lifetime opportunity. The trip was an experience that the children will never forget. We would also like to recognize those parents that chaperoned the trip. We appreciate you taking time away from work and your families to attend this trip. The trip would not have been a success without you. Thank you! To Mr. Harper and Mr. Buchanan, thank you for allowing our school to take a trip to Washington each year. We appreciate the sacrifices you make year after year to continue this trip. We are so lucky to have such a supportive administration that will go the extra mile to ensure the BEST educational experience for our students. Last but not least we would like to thank the students for making the trip awesome! You all were so well behaved. People who took notice throughout our journey made comments to chaperones and staff. Thank you for representing HLOE in a positive manner.
