Veterans visit WWII Memorial
Emotions overflow as WWII vets experience the opportunity of a lifetime
BY BRIDGET CAMPBELL STAFF WRITER
On a cool crisp day November 3, 84 World War II veterans of the Acadiana area, along with their guardians, boarded the US Airways chartered jet at the Lafayette Regional Airport en route to Washington D.C. and a visit to the World War II Memorial. The trip was sponsored by the Louisiana HonorAir and Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA) and gave these veterans the opportunity to visit the memorial built in recognition of their sacri-
fice in World War II. The trip was free of charge and, made possible by corporate and individual donations. The idea to take veterans to Washington first originated in Ohio on a smaller scale. But when word about the trips got out to radio personality T.D. Smith of 97.3 the Dawg, he embraced the opportunity to make this dream a reality to include Louisiana veterans as well. Smith then joined forces with the CFA, making the dream a reality for 84 Louisiana veterans on November 3. Louisiana became the third state to partic-
ipate in the program and this was the third of such trips. The men were divided into groups of three, red, white and blue and were given ball caps of their group color to help volunteers assist them properly. “We took care of all the details corresponding with Washington to make sure that the trip would be worry free for these veterans,” said Linda
Dautreuil, donor relations with the CFA. “For many of these men this will be the only opportunity they will have to visit the memorial built in appreciation for their service to our country and we wanted to make the experience a memorable one for them,” she added. And memorable it was, agreed WWII veteran Guy Cuccio,
Cuccio said that his emotions nearly got away from him when he arrived at the airport in Washington. “There were people standing in the terminal to greet us as we exited the plane holding red, white and blue balloons and signs. People were cheering for us and clapping and I nearly bursted into tears,” he said. “All of us were overwhelmed with emotions,” he added. Because of financial and health related reasons, some of these veterans would be taking their only trip. Many had yet to visit the
memorial that was finishes in 2002. “Those of us who did get to go on the trip thought of our fallen comrades that would never get the opportunity to experience this day,” said Cuccio. While in Washington, the veterans visited the World War II, Korean, Vietnam and Iwo Jima memorials as well as Arlington National Cemetery. Cuccio, a Calvary Solider and Erwin Breaux, a Buffalo soldier, both of Crowley along with Robert J. Reed, a submariner, of Lafayette

Special thank you
Honor Air: Having just returned from a wonderful trip to Washington DC, I felt compelled to write and state my feelings of the trip. First of all, I want to thank Mr.. T.D. Smith for having put this program together. It is such a wonderful, well planned trip and so well organized that General Patton would be green with envy. The workers knew exactly what to do and they did it well. It was so easy for us comrades to be a part of it because of them. Our thanks to them too. Many thanks should go to the people who helped or financed these trips. I hope it is possible for those future trips in 2008 to become a reality and we hope all of our comrades who are able to make the trip will take advantage of it. We know they will enjoy it as much as we did. Our arrival in Washington D.C. was a blast. People were lined up to welcome us into their area. The band played and if you didn’t get goose bumps you must have been sick. The sights were beautiful and of course we thought our memorial was the greatest. Too bad it wasn’t built earlier while some of our departed comrades were still alive. Everything else we saw was fantastic. Getting back to Lafayette was great and the turn-out we received at the terminal was unbelievable. I never dreamed of so many people being there to welcome us back home. What a day that was. My emotions almost took over as my son Jim walked me the car. The honor I felt then will last as long as I live. Thanks again and God Bless America.

were given the honor of placing a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. “When I saw the flag flown and heard the band play it really touched me. Fear for kids’ safety traps woman in monstrous marriage
nightly. He takes checks from my private account and writes them without my consent. When I get overdrafts, he acts like it’s my fault. If he spends money on the kids, he resents it -- and to complicate matters further, we filed for bankruptcy last year and are living in the house with my parents. To be truthful, I’m scared to live with him by myself. I cringe every time I’m forced to be intimate with him, and I’m dying inside in little pieces. Please advise me. I would like to be sane and have a reasonably decent life for me and my kids before it’s over. -- DESPERATE MOM IN COLORADO DEAR DESPERATE: You have your work cut out for you. First, talk to the police and go on record with the fact that your husband is a drugaddicted forger -- something you should also tell your bank, by the way -- and that you are afraid he will harm you or the children because of his instability due to his abuse of prescription medications. Then inform the physician who has been prescribing the meds. Tell your lawyer that you want to end your marriage, but that you are: (1) afraid he will harm you, (2) afraid he could harm the children, and (3) you would like him to have supervised visitation with them only because of his mental instability. Fortunately, you are living in your parents’ home -- which means you are not alone and vulnerable. But it’s time to get your husband out of there. Your attorney can advise you on the safest way to accomplish that. DEAR ABBY: Here’s my question: There are two sisters. One is a grandmother. Is her sister a “grand” aunt” or is she a “great” aunt”? I say she’s a grand-aunt. However, my wife -- the grandmother’s sister -- says she’s a great-aunt. How can that be? If that’s true, then I would be a “great” grandfather instead of a true grandfather. Only you can straighten out this argument. Thanks! -- CHARLES P. IN BATAVIA, ILL. DEAR CHARLES: According to Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th Edition), the terms “great-aunt” and “grandaunt” are synonymous. Either way, this would not make you a grandfather. You are either a great-uncle or grand-uncle -- the choice is yours. DEAR READERS: Today is Veterans Day, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank not only our veterans, but also those men and women who are still on active duty for their service to our country. -- ABBY Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. DEAR ABBY: I am in an eight-year marriage that feels like a prison sentence. I have two children under the age of 5, and a husband who is mentally and emotionally unstable and has severe addiction to prescription painkillers. If I divorce him, he will have joint custody of our children and, while I want them to know who their father is because they love him, I am terrified of what he might do to them as emotionally unstable as he is. I’m convinced he is capable of murder-suicide just to get at me. He forces me to say “I love you” several times a day. I don’t mean it anymore. He forces bodily contact. I sleep in a recliner in the den and put off going home from work to avoid him because I know the fight will be on when I get there. I have never cheated on him, but I’m accused of it all the time. I have no privacy. He searches my purse, phone and car for “evidence” almost

National family week announced
The week of Thanksgiving, November 18-24, 2007 is recognized nationwide as National Family Week. Sam Wiley, an Indianapolis teacher and school administrator, started National Family Week in 1968 as a means to provide Americans with an opportunity to promote strong families. All school in Acadia Parish, along with Title 1 Parental Involvement, have begun the school year fostering family partnerships, as well as implementing strategies and activities to actively involve parents in the education of their children. Research findings indicate that a positive home/school connection will increase parent support and involvement and will lead to an increase in student achievement. National Family week has proven to be a great time to honor the special connections that support and strengthen families. It embodies the premise that children live better lives when their families are strong; and families are strong when they live in communities that connect them to economic opportunities, social networks and services. credit for a major achievement. If others played a major role in helping to bring it about, you’ll regret it. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) - It won’t matter that the plan you conceive is a good one if you leave the implementation to those who lack the ability to carry it out. Choose your workers as carefully as you do the design. CANCER (June 21-July 22) -You could make a serious mistake if you believe something to be factual, because the information comes from a person you like. Double-check anything important before acting on it. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -Although partnership arrangements might hold a special appeal, that doesn’t necessarily mean teaming up with someone is a good idea. The wrong person may be dead weight. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -Take care not to get involved in petty politics, especially with friends. Regardless of whose side you’re on or whom you endorse, your pals who take the other side won’t think kindly of you. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) - During the present cycle, your financial indicators could run from high to low at times. If you’re not careful, these negative swings will dominate.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) - If you take care of your basic responsibilities first, the powersthat-be won’t get too upset if you slow down your efforts later in the day as you tire. If you don’t, there could be trouble. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) -- You can expect complications when you blow things out of proportion, whether or not you knowingly do so. Avoid inclinations to make more out of minor issues than actually exist. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- If there is something of a material nature you would like to acquire, chances are it can only be achieved through a logical sequence of steps. Depending on anything less is a wild dream. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) -- Even though the objectives you establish for yourself are likely to be both realistic and attainable, if you think achieving them is a foregone conclusion, you could end up disappointed. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) -- Charity should begin at home or at least within a close circle of friends. Before handing out your assets to strangers, be certain there isn’t someone close to you who needs help. ARIES (March 21-April 19) - Unless you accept others for who they are, you could delude yourself into believing they are more than what they represent themselves to be. You may be baffled that they don’t live up to your image. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -Don’t leave a false impression that you’re the one who should get full

Revival begins Sunday, November 11, and continues through Wednesday, November 14 at Acadiana Cathedral, Northside Assembly of God Church in Crowley. The Evangelists for these special services will be Wayne and Faye Headrick from Alexandria. In 1977, something happened that completely changed the direction of both their live. Faye was diagnosed with Metastatic Cancer in the terminal stage. Life expectancy was six months to one year! But praise God the “Chief Physician” was on call. God began to work in the supernatural realm. Faye received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, followed by complete physical healing.
During the following year, Wayne also became spirit filled, and this experience totally changed his ministry. Your heart will be strangely warmed, and your soul blessed by the testimonies of this couple. The anointing that God has given Wayne and Faye leads congregations into the realm of the super-natural with signs and wonders following. The gifts of healing, deliverance, and praying for people to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit are upon their lives. Service times are Sunday, 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday at 7 p.m. Pastor Singley invites the public to attend. For more information call 783-3620.
