Newsletter 1 7 February, 2008

Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome back to school for 2008. The children have settled in well, enjoyed the wet and cooler weather and are learning the routines of the day. Thank you to all our teachers for their preparation during the past weeks, which has enabled such a smooth start to the year. We welcome all families who have joined our community this year and look forward to your participation during the year. We also have some changes of staff. Mr Joshua Currie left us to join the ACT Fire Brigade at the end of the year and we have several new staff members, Ms Jessica Doyle—Year 3, Ms Molly Shea—Year 2 and our janitor Peter Campbell. The calendar for first term is at the back of this newsletter. Our first parent function will be “Meet my teacher” from 5pm—7pm on Wednesday 20 February. This will be held in our Multi-Purpose room and we will send more details closer to the time. Our newsletter is our main communication with you and I encourage you to read it each Thursday. It is also available on our webpage: www.holyspirit.cg.catholic.edu.au. I look forward to seeing you all throughout the year as we all work together for the educational, emotional and spiritual development of our children. Yours sincerely, Volunteers Needed to help with a Sausage Sizzle at “Meet My Teacher Evening” on Wednesday 20 February 5pm to 7pm. Please leave your name at the Front Office.

Our Spirit

Hello! Here we are back for our first Whole School Focus news report for 2008. On behalf of the staff I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone, students, staff, families and friends. Our year has begun extremely well and there is an atmosphere of excitement buzzing around the school. We have already felt the strong bonds of community spirit with many people helping to make the beginning of our school year run as smoothly as possible. Our theme for 2008 is centred on the concept of being ‘God’s Little Builders’. This theme will run for the year to remind us that we can build a strong personal faith and a strong community spirit when we learn more about who we are and how we can act towards one another. This year we hope to explore many ways that we can grow and challenge ourselves to be more like Jesus every day. Every one of us has an important part to play in building community here at Holy Spirit school. It is the little things we do for each other that make the most difference. We never know how deeply we may touch another person’s heart. Sometimes we may do one little thing that can make a difference in someone else’s day. A smile, a wave, saying hello, stopping for a chat or taking an interest in someone else’s story can be that little thing that makes all the difference in someone’s life. We had our first Focus Assembly this morning and we were treated to some fantastic acting. Mrs Kelly and Miss Gaffey built some great still life pictures. Thank you to the people in the audience for cooperating with them and being part of their creative sculpting. Thank you also to all the teachers who helped present our message today. You were fabulous! We also celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass for the children in Years 4, 5 and 6 to mark the beginning of Lent. Children in Years 1 to 3 had an Ash Wednesday liturgy in their classrooms with Sr Genny. The children were a credit to our school, they were reverent and focused. Thank you to Sr Genny and Fr Bernie for the tireless work they do for our community. We are truly blessed to have them amongst us, serving us in so many ways. Please look out for the Lenten Family homework sheet that will come home today with the eldest child in your family. An activity will also come home in the newsletter to complete for each week of Lent. We look forward to seeing everybody at our weekly Focus Assemblies each Wednesday morning at 9.10am. If you are able to make it we would love to see you there. Thank you for your continuing support. Our prayers are with you. Have a lovely week. Liana White Religious Education Coordinator

DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP CHILDREN
To assist you to safely drop off and collect your child/ren we have two designated drop off and pick up zones supervised by teachers—one in each car park. Bottom Car Park Parents are requested to assist us by not parking and leaving your car unattended in the “U” section of the bottom car park. This area is a drive through ‘pick up’ area in the afternoon and is supervised. Cars may be parked in the centre bays and on the netball courts only. Top Cark Park Cars must only be parked in designated parking bays. Parents may drive through and pick up their children from the area between the Library and the first set of class rooms. Teachers are on duty and will direct children to cars. If your child walks or rides home each day, please remind him/her to use the designated school crossings.
