					School Questionnaire: Waste and Recycling

   1. Find out where waste is produced in the school and what type they are.
      To do this you should go around to the different areas of the school: classrooms, library,
      workshops, laboratories, cafeteria/dining room, any sporting areas, storerooms, maintenance
      areas, the nurse’s office, etc. and ask the people who are responsible for that area what type
      of waste is produced in that area of the school. You should also ask about the quantity of
      waste that is produced both daily and weekly.

   2. In the case you have found dangerous waste products, indicate what they are:

       The dangerous waste products that you can usually find are products related to cleaning and
       maintenance, in addition to some products that can be found in a laboratory. Check the labels
       on the original containers, where it will tell you why they are classified as dangerous.

   3. Next check the quality of the containers where waste is disposed of.

       What are the waste containers in the school like? You will probably find different types of
       containers depending on your school and the types of waste that goes into each container.
       For example, you should be able to find a paper container, waste baskets of different sizes,
       containers for dangerous materials, etc.
       Take note of the basic characteristics of the containers, what are they made out of, capacity, can
       they be closed, do they have wheels, etc. and finally what type of waste materials are they made
       for.

4. Look to see if your school has a garbage room, where the containers are stored during the
   day.

           If you respond “no” pass to question number 6.

5. If you do have a garbage room, who is responsible for cleaning and maintaining it?

    Ask who takes the garbage away from the school; usually it is the city’s place to take away the
    trash through a company that city hall employs. Try to get the data about how often the waste
    is collected from the school.

8. Calculate the amount of waste produced in your school.

    At this point you should have a good idea about how much waste is produced in your school.
    Calculate the amount of waste your school produces in a year.

9. Does your school participate in a type of selective garbage pickup?
       Yes
       No
          If you answer “no” pass to question number 11.

10. If you have answered yes, what type of wastes are selectively collected?
          Paper and Cardboard

          Computers, printers, CDs and diskettes

11. Find out if your school has the “Reciclable” materials.

            Find out if there is a printed copy of the “Punto Verde” information and who is in charge
            of ordering the information.
            If you have answered “no” pass to question 13.

13. Now find out if your uses “Recycled” materials.

            The most used recyclable material is paper. You will know if it is recycled or not because
            of the color and the texture (it is darker and more rough) or because it has a symbol on
            the package.

14. If you use recycled paper, see if the use is in general for all school papers or only in certain
    areas.
          In memos, communications o letters from the administration.

          In the materials given to you by the professors
          In the photocopies and printers in the school
            Visit the different places in your school where paper is used and find out if they use
            recycled paper or not.

15. Check the photocopiers and printers in you school, are the toner cartridges and ink cartridges
    selectively collected to be recycled?
    Ask the person in charge of purchasing if these items are included in the budget, are they
    bought new, or are they refilled?

16. Check to see if your school uses materials that are for one use only. (Usar y tirar)

17. If you have answered “yes” please indicate which (Ex. Plastic plates and glasses, napkins,
    tablecloths, paper towels, etc.)

18. Find out what you school does with unwanted furniture (desks, chairs, etc.) and left over
    building materials.
         Ask if they use the “clean points” if the school has a contract with a business to take
            these items away. Also ask if they work with a non-profit organization outside of the
            government.

19. Find out if your school participates in any type of campaign to collect materials to recycle.

20. Has your school ever participated in any activity to educate people on how to properly use
    materials and recycle? When was the activity held and what was were the positive affects?
