60-Minute Men

The Redskins are 2-1 and coming off a bye week. Detroit is among the NFL’s biggest surprises at 3-1. In their last game, the Redskins squandered a 14-point second-half lead in a 24-17 loss to the New York Giants. The Lions produced a league-record 34 points in the fourth quarter of last week’s 37-27 victory over Chicago, so another late-game letdown could be trouble for the Redskins.

Keep It Running

The running game was productive in victories over Miami and Philadelphia, but the Giants limited the Redskins to 82 yards on 27 carries, including 17 yards on 10 rushes in the second half. Clinton Portis has a bruised and sprained knee, Ladell Betts hasn’t found his rhythm yet and the right side of the offensive line still is jelling because of injuries. Regardless, more is needed here.

Third Is First

After two games, the Redskins limited opponents to a 27.6 conversion percentage (8 for 29) on third down, which led the league. The Giants, however, converted nine third downs — including 7 of 9 after halftime. The Redskins converted only 31 percent (5 of 16) of their third downs against New York and went 2 of 8 in the second half, contributing to the wearing down of their defense.

Pick Up the Points

Offensive coordinator Mike Martz brought his up-tempo style to Detroit, featuring three- and four-receiver sets. The results have been good for the Lions, who are fourth in scoring at 28.5 points per game. With the exception of the second half against the Giants, the Redskins are making more plays on offense than they did last season, but they’re only 22nd in scoring at 17.7 points per game.

etroit Lions quarterback Jon Kitna is having the time of his career, doing big things again in his second season with offensive coordinator Mike Martz. All those three- and four-receiver sets in a pass-first offense have provided a boost for Kitna, who never expected to have it so good. The Redskins are aware of Kitna’s impressive comeback in Detroit after his previous stint as a backup in Cincinnati, and their defensive backs expect to be busy today at FedEx Field. “Man, with the way he’s throwing the ball, and with those receivers they’ve got, you know you’re going to get a lot of opportunities to make plays,” cornerback Fred Smoot said. “You know what Mike Martz does, you know what Kitna can do, so you’ve got to be ready. Sometimes, you go into a game wondering if you’re going to get any chances, but this ain’t that type of game.” Kitna has thrived since joining Martz,

passing for 4,208 yards last season with the Lions and leading the team to a surprising 3-1 start this season. Last week, Detroit scored an NFL-record 34 points in the fourth quarter of a 37-27 victory over Chicago. Kitna leads the NFL with 1,227 passing yards. “I feel like I waited 10 years of my career to get with a guy who really values the skills set that I can bring to the table,” Kitna said of Martz. “He never talks about things you can’t do; he only talks about the things that you can

do, and he focuses on those things. “He coaches me how I’ve always wanted to be coached. I’m an aggressive player, and he’s an aggressive coach, so it’s a great match.” After signing with Seattle as an undrafted free agent in 1996, Kitna started 33 games for the Seahawks. He signed with Cincinnati as a free agent in 2001, started 43 games over the next three seasons and was selected the NFL’s comeback player of the year in 2003. The emergence of quarterback Carson Palmer, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft, in Cincinnati prompted Kitna to leave after the 2005 season and sign with Detroit. “When I came here on my free agent visit, I wasn’t even aware that [Martz] was here yet,” Kitna said. “When I sat down and found out that he was the coordinator, I couldn’t really believe how blessed I was to have an opportunity to play with this guy and be coached by him. It’s been everything I dreamed of, and I’m just loving it.”

CAMPBELL’S CORNER | THE REDSKINS QB’S TAKE ON THE LIONS

From 3-13 last season to 3-1 so far this season, the Lions are making strides and appear to have a bounce in their step. “They’ve got a swagger on the field,” Campbell said. “They’re confident in what they’re doing. They’re playing together as a unit, and you know they’re not the same team as last season. That’s one thing you’ve got to do . . . put the bad stuff behind you.” Detroit is tied for 30th in the league in pass defense, giving up an average of 267.5 yards per game, but Campbell doesn’t expect Washington’s offensive philosophy to change. “We’re more of a run-oriented team first. We pass second,” he said. “Other teams are the opposite, so you can’t look at it as every situation being the same against their defense. But with our receivers, whenever we play anybody, we have the ability to make plays.” Wide receiver Santana Moss might be sidelined or slowed because of a groin injury, leading to more opportunities for wide receiver Antwaan Randle El and tight end Chris Cooley. “We definitely love Santana,” Campbell said. “But we also know we want Santana to be 100 percent and get his legs back right because he’s such a dynamic player. Antwaan, Cooley . . . we have a lot of confidence in those guys. They’ll be ready.”
