Director’s Report
Seems like May was the shortest month of the year, although I know it wasn’t. Primary Officers Training was very informative and most of our officers attended. Scott Jones, Diane Cortez, Barry Valdez, Bryan Hartnell, Steve Walker, Pam Walker and myself. I think most of the others really enjoyed the information that they gave us and of course it wasn’t all work. They had a little party with food, drinks and a band on Friday night. Can’t say as it was worth the bucks it cost for the hotel room, but I’m sure I would go again. Bishop is over and I missed it this year. Sounds like I didn’t miss much because it rained all over California and Arizona that weekend. As I write this I’m getting ready for Rialto Rotary’s Run Whatcha Brung in downFlag Day is on the 14th. Help celebrate this very eventful day. Father’s day is the 15th of this month. Please don’t forget this very important date.
town Rialto this Saturday. It is Rotary’s big fund raiser of the year and we are working hard to make it a success. Steve is busy keeping the Chapter going on rides and before you know it we will be on our way to Milwaukee. Wow, What a great turn out at the Quaid's Open House for the blood drive. There were 61 attempts and 51 pints of blood donated that day. Thank you for giving up some of your play time to give the gift of life. Of course we will be doing it again in October when Quaid has his next Open House and SBHOG will again be putting on the 14th Annual Veterans Poker Run. Remember, members these volunteers make blood available for every member of SBHOG and their immediate family if they don't have insurance to cover it. It has been used in this way many times over the years, so be sure to thank these blood donators the next time you see them. These names here are for

ACTIVITIES ARTICLE
NO EVIDENCE ! That is right ! There is no evidence of global warming as far as the Memorial Day Weekend is concerned no matter where you were in southern California. Pam and I started our weekend on Thursday morning trailering our bikes up to The Bishop Camp Out. The truck was shiny clean and full of our camping gear along with Jeff and Jan Jackson, Mike and Marilyn Wood, and Darrell and Colleen's ruff it stuff. No more had the totally clean and waxed bikes been out of the garage than it starts to rain and made loading the two big bikes a real fun and slippery scenario. Eventually, off we were, and once we got past Cajon Pass the weather was only occasionally misty, but with a strong and steady head wind. Well we got up to Bishop and Rick and Molly Anderson were already there, so we got a good chance to visit and catch up on lifes' happenings. We had a great sandwich at the Browns Town Deli and got settled in. Bully, Rodger McEwan, Tony and Sharon Enos were there too and Bully got a load of fire wood. So we sat around and lied to each other until the sand man had had enough of our BS and made our eyes scratchy. We hit the tent and wished for a good day on Friday. Well it was nice at first, so Pam, Rick, Molly and I set out to Big Pine for breakfast and headed over toward Eureka Valley and onto the north west corner of Death Valley. Well we got up about 5,000 ft and the sleeting snow started to hit us and we had to turn around. The weather got a little worse and we were taking bets on who would come up on Friday. We heard about the horrendous weather in San Bernardino and was really surprised to see all my peeps show up that I had camping gear for. Real bikers on a real biker weekend. Congratulations to all six of them and also to Scott Jones, Harlen and Herman who made it up carrying all their own gear. Well all in all it was not a riding weekend as the weather was hitting all around us at about 5,000 feet. So we did the "tourist thing" and even got to see the Mule Days Parade in great cool, sunny weather. The next opportunity to have an adventure in Bishop will be on October 3rd for the Tri-County Car Show. I hope to see all of you there. Just get your camping gear together and bring your sense of adventure and SBHOG will supply the rest. Until later members: Ride with good spirit. Steve Walker Activities Officer SBHOG
So … sounds like a great excuse for a DINNER RIDE … right! We’ll meet at Quaid’s at 6pm … and will ride out to Ruby’s Diner in Cabazon. I know it’s a work night for most of us, so didn’t want to plan anything too far or too elaborate … Just a short ride down the freeway for some great burgers and shakes! It’s a fun challenge … so let’s do our part to help National H.O.G. achieve their goal for MILLION MILE MONDAY
SAVE THE DATE – SATURDAY, AUGUST 2, 2008 SBHOG at Arrowhead Credit Union Park -- Inland Empire 66ers vs. High Desert Mavericks! San Bernardino HOG will once again gather at the ball park for a great all-you-can-eat dinner and baseball game. This is a promotional event … Six (6) Quad's will be given out throughout the game PLUS the first 1500 people will receive a Dodger Cooler Bag! Game time is at 7:05pm, and the gates open at 5:15pm … so we will meet at Quaid’s at 4:30pm to ride to the ballpark. You MUST pre-register!! Deadline to register will be at our July meeting – I will stay after our meetings in both June & July to accept pre-registration. The cost is $20 per person … you can’t beat the cost for an evening of great food, great friends … and America’s favorite pastime (besides riding Harley’s, of course)!! If you have a great idea for LOH involvement, or have questions related to the LOH program, please feel free to contact me (my contact info is below). Always remember … Stay safe by riding safe! ~ Di Diane Cortez 2008 LOH Officer ranchocortez@adelphia.net 951.288.0757 (cell)

Safety Comes First On Every Ride
MOTORCYCLE SAFETY - CRASH AVOIDANCE
by Jerry Palladino (MOTORMAN)
I read somewhere recently that 99% of the crashes most riders get involved in are avoidable. While that may seem a little hard to believe, it just may be true. Let's look at the most common motorcycle crash which of course, occurs when another vehicle violates your right of way. This usually happens as you approach an intersection and a vehicle turns left in front of you. It also occurs when a vehicle pulls out from a side road into your path, but let's look at the left turning vehicle first and how to avoid the crash since your actions should be pretty much the same for both scenarios. Here are the best ways to avoid a crash in these situations. First, look at least 12 seconds ahead of your motorcycle. Your eyes should be scanning from left to right and up and down. The sooner you see the potential hazard, the more time you'll have to react. Second, since most crashes happen in an intersection, slow down when approaching one. Cover both your front and rear brakes as you get closer to the intersection. Position your bike to the left side of your lane. If you're going to have to swerve around the left turning vehicle, your swerve will usually be to the left around the back of the vehicle and then quickly back to the right. However, most of the time in that situation, your only course of action will be to stop quickly using both your front and rear brakes. That's why it is so important to practice emergency braking using both brakes. The average rider never does practice braking, consequently, in that situation, the average rider slams on the rear brake, locks the tire and skids right into the vehicle. Even if he misses the vehicle, he still slides onto the ground. Either way, he crashes for no reason. By looking way ahead of your motorcycle, you'll be able to anticipate the actions of that vehicle and be able to apply your brakes long before it becomes an emergency. If you spend just a few minutes a week practicing emergency braking, you will lessen the chances of locking the rear wheel dramatically. The second most common motorcycle crash involves only the motorcycle and its called failure to negotiate a turn. What usually happens is the rider gets into a turn and suddenly believes he's going too fast to make it around the curve. Maybe the rider hears the pegs start to scrape. Since he's not familiar with that sound, he panics, straightens up the bike, then looks at the yellow line in the road, the guard rail, or even the oncoming vehicle and a crash occurs. In over 600 cases of failure to negotiate a curve studied, in every case the bike was capable of making the turn at the speed the rider was going, the rider was not. So, how do you avoid this crash? It's simple. Learn to use head and eyes properly. When rounding a curve to the left, position your bike to the right side of the lane and focus on the end of the turn and no where else. Never, never, look at the yellow line, the guard rail, or the oncoming car. If the road curves to the right, position your bike to the left side of the lane as you enter the curve. In addition, find your bikes' limits in a parking lot at 5mph where the worst that could happen is a simple tip-over. The bottom line, practice makes perfect. Learn to use your head and eyes properly. It is the key to safe riding. Learn to use both your front and rear brakes and keep them from locking so you very well may be able to avoid 99% of the crashes you're likely to be involved in. At the very least, you will minimize injuries to yourself and damage to your bike. Don't be an average rider who depends on dumb luck. Instead, practice and Ride Like a PRO.

Zuma and I rode our new FLTR to Napa for a party last weekend. The air temp gauge was stuck on 110 degrees all the way up 99. On Sunday we had a nice brunch with my brother and his wife in Santa Cruz, and took the 101 home to beat the heat. It was okay until we hit Santa Barbara, where the stop-and-go started. I must have split lanes for 100 miles. By the time we got close to home we were really hot and tired. I have the habit of speeding up a bit as we get closer to home, and nearly paid the price this time. It was just before 7 PM and still sunny, and we were a mere three miles from our driveway, on the two lane road bePage 6
tween Norco and Riverside that skirts the Santa Ana River. It's a gentle right bend, a bit blind, no traffic, and I was cooking along at a speed that I will not admit to when I saw a pickup truck parked against a power pole and small grass fire on the left. Suddenly I realized that a downed power line was draped across our path! I jinked left to miss the part that was overhead, but ran over the loose end. It came up and smashed the right footboard, hit me in the ankle, and Zuma in the shin pretty hard. It was a cable about an inch in diameter, covered in steel braid. Not sure if it was still live, but we were not grounded so there was no real danger of electrocution. However, we
could have been severely injured if it had snagged on the bike - or us. Funny thing, it did not touch the paintwork - there are some small scratches on the engine and saddlebag guards that will stay as a reminder. I'll do a thorough inspection later today, esp. the tires. Zuma's shin is much better today (ice works wonders) and the drunk who hit the pole is still being sought by the police. A new footboard was $80, we definitely got off lightly. A gentle reminder not to speed simply because you think you know the road, even when you are hot and tired. Tom Ross

A Friend In Need
Part #1 Members, Unfortunately one of our members went down on the way to Big Bear this last weekend. Her name is Michelle Conner. Some of you may not know her personally, but she is a Black Sheep member and was volunteering at the last Quaid Open House. She even came in second in the Ladies Slow Race. Here is what Vicky has sent me about Michelle. Keep her in your thoughts and prays. 5/18/08 just wanted you to know that Michelle Conner (Black Sheep --SB HOG member) went down yesterday and is in Loma Linda ICU...we were headed to Big Bear and she overtook a curve...broken rib, 2 fractured vertebrae's, lacerated liver....I will keep you updated.. Her husband Mike and daughter Macie were right behind her on his bike and saw the whole incident happen so keep Macie up in your prayers....as well as Michelle Love you and Pam. Vicky. I.E. Black Sheep 5/18/08 The family wants to thank you for all the prayers.....Michelle is in very very good spirits....even with all the pain. Tomorrow they will be fitting her with a back brace as she has 2 fractured vertebrea's (I can't spell that word..LOL). Right now they have her laying FLAT on her back and every once in a while they turn her and that when she has the most pain...they are focusing mostly on the liver issue right now (which is getting better, Praise Jesus) and when that is done with, then they will focus on the back..She is still in ICU but prayfull will be moved out of there soon. Mike want's to stay at the hospital so I have Macie here at my house so she can get a good night sleep. Keep the prayers coming...for all 3 of them. Blessings. Vicky 5/19/08 Michelle is doing wonderful...she was moved out of the ICU unit. She has on a back brace (and they were able to take the neck brace off). She was able to stand today for 5 minutes. The liver is healing and they are allowing her to eat jello, pudding, and even some melon. GOD IS GOOD!! Attached is her pic...keep the prayers coming. Love you all V
5/20/08 Tuesday..Michelle Update: Praise Jesus..God continues to show his miracles....Today, they are going to have Michelle walk. She was able to sleep without her brace on. She only needs it on when sitting or standing....but Pray-fully after she walks she won't need it at all!!! She is finally on full food menu and had vegi lasagna last night and was finally giving a sponge bath last night and felt she was in heaven...LOL...(she still had dirt in her hair)...TONIGHT after bible study we are all going to the hospital for a Biker Invasion into her room...Macie stayed at our house last night and got a good night sleep, some breakfast and she is at school right now and Mike said he got about 4 1/2 hours of sleep. Keep the prayers coming. Love you all. Vicky Part #2 5/21/08 WED---Michelle Update Today, Michelle walked with the help of a walker...PRAISE JESUS!!! She is being transferred to Kaiser Hosp and when I find out what room she will be in I will let you know. She has some weakness in her right arm and shoulder and she also has 1 pupil that stays dilated. Macie took off for Long Beach this morning with her 8th grade class and will be on a boat until Friday...even though she didn't want to leave her mom, this little get away is just what she needs. Mike, like the loving hubby and man of God he is, continues to stay by Michelle's side. Keep the prayers coming for the 3 of them. Love you. Vicky Part #3 Today--Tuesday, May 27th..Michelle is being released :-)...she will be home soon..PRAISE JESUS...We will be putting together a group of women (or men) to do some cooking for the family for a couple weeks until she feels good enough to take on that task. She is coming home with a wheelchair and a walker and of course her back brace that she must keep on unless she is in bed....Thank you Jesus that she is comin home!! Prayers are heard and answered-AMEN!! Love you all. Vicky
