“There is only one way to happiness, and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will.” - Epictetus When I used to teach Health 101 at Southwestern College, the one thing I would tell students is that stress will kill you, if you let it. It will wreak havoc with your health, both mentally and physically. There was a great article in the Union Tribune in July about stress, with lots of great tips for achieving inner peace. Harriet Meyerson, an author, speaker and coach developed a website, confidencecenter.com, that lists 99 tips for reducing stress. Whether you or someone you know is/are stressed out, here are some tips from Harriet’s website to help ease it: • Don’t rely on memory-write it down • Make duplicate keys • Avoid negative people • Un-clutter your life • Break large tasks into bite-size portions • Buy yourself flowers • Take time to smell the flowers • Work at being cheerful and optimistic • Get enough sleep • Relax Pet a friendly dog or cat On that last note, pets can be a real stress-reducer. Since getting a dog about 18 months ago, my life has improved immensely. Pets, whether you have a cat, dog, bird or fish, can help to fill a void you may not have known that you had.
