May-June 2008 Volume 5, Issue 11 & 12 take us to the form and return for $150.00. You can set back and leave the driving to someone else and not worry about the price of gasoline. It’s also a great way to get to know other Lions. Membership and retention has been very strong this year and we should end this year with and increase in membership. It’s the first time since 2000 that we have had positive growth. A strong and active membership is the foundation of the Lions and its mission to serve the communities around the world. Retention is an important part of membership and many times overlooked. We need to mentor and recruit our existing members to keep them excited and involved in our programs. We need to share our story and our vision for service with our new members to develop a new generation of Lions. There are still a number of clubs who aren’t current on submitting their monthly MMR to International. Bring your reporting up to date so we can end the year with all MMR submitted. Thank you All club visits are complete except one and I have truly enjoyed meeting the Lions of this district. This has been a truly enjoyable year and I wish to thank all the clubs for their warmth and hospitality. Although all Lions are a part of an International organization each club is unique in the way they serve their communities and those around them. There are so many Lions through out the district that have done outstanding work and truly live the Lions motto of “We Serve”. Thank you for a great year. Driven to Serve Yours in Lionism Lion Roger Driven to serve On May 2, 3 and 4 we held our Multiple convention in Mahnomen it was a fun and informative convention. There were three great educational seminars, which included “Spring Point Project”, by Dr Henk-Jan Schuurman, “It’s a sweet Life Now” by Maggie Hunt and “Do you believe in Miracles” by Ross Bernstein. Spring Point is a program operated by the University of Minnesota and is an experimental project where Islet cell from pigs will be transplanted into humans and will hopefully cure them of diabetes. Maggie Hunt is a professional entertainer who has lived with type 1 diabetes for the past 20 years. Ross Bernstein talked about his mentor Herb Brooks and the United States Hockey team that won the Olympic Gold Medal. During the business meeting two important resolutions were adopted first we established a MD5M Diabetes Foundation and secondly we added the Spring Point Project to the list of official sanctioned program that we support. Sunday morning we voted and elected to endorse PDG Debra Wasserman as the candidate from our multiple to seek election as International Director at the 2008 International Convention in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2009 the Multiple Convention will be right here in our District plan now to attend and meet Lions from around our great Multiple and learn what is happening in the other district. There will be great seminars and you will learn more about the operations of our Multiple Lions District. Mark your calendars September 18, 19 & 20th in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan the USA/Canada form. The form is a great place to learn more about what we do so plan to attend. Thank you! On behalf of the SightFirst II Campaign, I would like to thank the Lions of 5M5 for all the hard work you have done to raise money for this project. As of today, 5M5 has sent to Lions International $173, 865.14 for this project. This money will help save a lot of people from preventable blindness. Remember every gift of $6 provides the gift of sight to another person so by our donations we have saved 28,977 people from blindness. I would like to recognize several clubs that have made a major impact on this project. Three clubs in our District have become Model Clubs for this project. Part of becoming a Model Club is agreeing to raise $400 per club member for this project. The following clubs are Model Clubs: Brooklyn Center Minneapolis Central Osseo I would also like to recognize the clubs that have achieve the distinction of reaching the Topaz Level of Recognition. This means they have donated $100 or more per club member to SFII.
