You will also complete portions of the All About Birds, Shore to Sea, and Leadership Interest Patches. You will accomplish this by learning about the Chesapeake Bay watershed, the largest freshwater bay in the USA. Activities include “surfing” for watershed information on the internet, identifying ways to conserve and protect water, field trip to a local National Wildlife Refuge to identify birds and plants, a day of environmental experiments on board a boat in the Chesapeake Bay, learning about stakeholders and visiting one of their meetings, an environmental career day, You will learn the important issues in watershed protection such as habitat conservation, non-point source pollution, This experience is a must if you are considering a career in environmental science. Additional information is available at the camporee website, www.oregoncamporee.com, or by writing to info@oregoncamporee.com. Is your troop looking for a great event at which to meet girls from all around the USA, maybe even from other countries? Then mark your calendar for July 10 - 17, 2005, when Santiam Council will be hosting a camporee near Corvallis, Oregon. Corvallis is located in the lush Willamette Valley of western Oregon, with nearby access to both Amtrak and airline services. This will be a troop camping event with opportunities to experience outdoor adventures at the nearby Oregon coast and the recreation areas of the snowcapped Cascade Mountains. The days will be filled with fun activities such as sports tournaments, hikes, classes, and swimming. On Saturday the entire camporee will attend da Vinci Days, a unique celebration of innovation and creativity. There will be evening programs and many new friends to meet. The camporee will be open to up to 1000 girls entering 8th through 12th grades in the fall of 2005, their adult patrol leaders, and event volunteers. Girls who will be 14 years of age by Sept. 30, 2005 are also eligible to attend. The camporee site is handicap accessible. Registration information will be provided on the website and sent to GS Council offices in the spring of 2004. The registration period will be open during the summer of 2004, dates TBA. Jane Brady WHO: Students in grades 3 through 8 in all Delaware public, parochial and private schools are invited to submit a poster WHEN: Deadline to submit posters is March 15th WHY: The Poster Contest is being sponsored to focus attention on how students can help keep their schools safe. The contest theme is: “I Can Help Stop Bullying By…” Winning posters will be published in a calendar which will be sent to all Delaware schools. Safety-Wise states, "Girls and adults may not post notices on the Internet to sell Girl Scout Cookies or other products from councilsponsored product sales. The Talbot Family Network has selected Marguerite Helminiak to receive this years "Individual Community Service Award. The Awards took place on Thursday, January 29th. at the Avalon Theatre in Easton. Lt. Governor Michael Steele was the keynote speaker. Marguerite Helminiak is currently a Girl Scout volunteer in Talbot County. She has been involved for many years. Marguerite has taken on several volunteer positions over the years, including Troop Leader, Service Unit Manager, Public Relations Representative, Organizers, Consultant, and LOVE Project Coordinator. She has been the troop leader for a group of girls at the St. Michael's Housing Complex for several years. 3 Service… Camp Service Project Weekend at Grove Point April 3-5, 2004 For Junior and Teen Troops….. A great way to earn service hours and have fun at camp too! You may arrive on Friday evening or Saturday morning and leave on Saturday evening or Sunday. We will have a number of service projects - the pick up, clean up, spruce up kind that girls and leaders may help with. Dads are welcome, we’ll have a few projects for them too. There will be no charge to camp. We will feed you 3 meals + snacks on Saturday and 2 meals on Sunday for $14 per person. We'll have some kind of a social thing on Friday evening and a campfire on Saturday evening. Everybody gets a patch. Materials will be provided, please bring any brooms or rakes you have available and work glovesand insect repellent for each person. We'll have a list of projects to sign up for by mid April. One Warm Coat From: Troop 958 Long Neck, DE We have completed our coat drive for the One Warm Coat community service project! We only have 6 girls in our troop and set our goal at 50 coats. However, with the overwhelming support from our community, especially Food Lion, Conley's United Methodist Church, Casella's Sub Shop & Ocean Retreat Beauty Salon, we were able to place drop boxes in our community and this is what we collected: 314 coats, (63 of which are children’s) 6 pairs of gloves 3 hats 4 scarves 2 children’s snowsuits 11 green Lawn bags full of clothes quite a few pairs of shoes and we even got 3 brown bags full of nonperishable foods! Our Girls worked very hard collecting and counting all these items. They are Melissa Quinney, Bailey Joseph, Sarah Ward, Kristina Harmon, Sara Hall & Kirsten Cosgrove Happy New Year!! Is the salt marsh a wonderland or wasteland? A menace or marvel? Discover the answers for yourself as you explore the intriguing qualities of the salt marsh. You will get your feet wet and muddy. After your finished with this program put on by the National Park Service, come enjoy a second Habitat program held by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Programs. In the habitat program you will discover wonderful things about forest and marsh habitats. Do you want even more, then spend your free time in the park earning a free patch through the Junior Refuge Manager Program or the Junior Birder Program. Location: Assateague Island Nat. Thanks Jim Keeper Sleeper Absecon Lighthouse’s Overnight Program Ever wonder what is what like to be a Lighthouse Keeper over 140 years ago? Join us for an overnight adventure and find out. Since 1857 Absecon Lighthouse has been a beacon of light for ships sailing along the Jersey shore. As the third tallest lighthouse in the Untied States, come see why visitors have been climbing the tower for over 147 years. Upon arrival participants will be sworn in as Junior Lighthouse Keepers and begin their “training” immediately. The program will include the following fun activities:  Video on lighthouse illumination and history  Night time climb to the top of the tower for a spectacular view of Atlantic City  Sky High Tower competition where trainees learn the basics of tower construction and build their own tower  Snack and breakfast  Learn Lighthouse folklore  Learn how to use a compass and practice orienteering skills  Build a clinometer and learn how to measure tall objects Price: $35 per person When: Select Friday and Saturday nights (call for availability) Who: Girl & Boy scouts, and youth groups ages 6-12 Location: Absecon Lighthouse is located on Pacific Avenue in Atlantic City.
