noted Neal Boortz, who then quipped, “I’ve been doing talk radio for 37 years and I’ve never had an original thought.” The first award, the “God, I Hate America” award went to New York Times Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr., who chastised America for not doing enough to secure “fundamental human rights,” such as abortion-on-demand and gay marriage. The “I’m Not a Political Genius But I Play One on TV Award” went to Rosie O’Donnell for her comment on ABC’s The View (audience 3.5 million) that “radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam in a country like America.” In accepting the award on behalf of Rosie O’Donnell, businessman and game-show host Pat Sajak said that he didn’t understand why everyone was upset with what Ms. O’Donnell said. “All she did was equate radical Christianity with radical Islam,” said Mr. Sajak, “and last night I was in church in my neighborhood – it’s our Wednesday night beheadings.” (See pp. 4-5 for all the DisHonors Awards.) Besides this year’s awards, gala attendees were treated to a “Best of Past DisHonors Awards” highlight video. This trip down liberal media lane included clips of Barbara Walters praising Communist Cuba’s health care and education; Dan Rather defending his careercrushing Bush National Guard memo story; and Senator Zell Miller challenging MSNBC’s Chris Matthews to a duel on national TV. As usual, the gala received lots of media attention, including mentions on Fox’s Special Report with Brit Hume, on the Rush Limbaugh Show, in the Washington Times, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and National Review. The evening was taped by C-SPAN to be broadcast in the coming weeks. I hope you’ll catch it. The MRC has, indeed, come a long way in 20 years. More Americans are aware of liberal media bias than ever before. And now, as the media rapidly change and expand because of technology and the Internet, the Media Research Center is there, to keep Americans informed and to keep the liberal media on the run. We thank you for your kind and generous support over the years. Sincerely, L. Brent Bozell III Founder and President

Herman Cain, Chairman of the MRC’s Business and Media Institute, and MRC Board of Trustee Dick Eckberg surprised Brent Bozell with this beautiful giant painting they commissioned by renowned artist Steve Penley. Penley is best known for his bold and vibrant paintings of historical and popular icons, including Teddy Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.

MRC Honors Rush Limbaugh with First Annual

William F. Buckley Jr. Excellence in Media Award

Editor’s Note: Below are excerpts from Rush Limbaugh’s acceptance speech of the William F. Buckley Jr. Excellence in Media Award, presented at the MRC’s 20th Anniversary Gala Featuring the DisHonors Awards on March 29. Video of Mr. Limbaugh’s speech and the entire gala can be viewed at the MRC Web site, www.MRC.org. Rush Limbaugh: When Brent called me and said, “We’ve got this new award, the William F. Buckley Greatest Conservative in the World Award, and you’re going to win the first one” — I think that’s what he said when he first posed it (Laughter) — I said, “Well, that fits.” (Laughter.) Ahem. A little humility there. I said, “That is amazing.” We conservatives don’t get many awards, but we actually have an audience. These PBS people and NPR people give themselves all these awards, but nobody’s ever seen the shows that get awarded. (Laughter.) We actually have an audience, and so we are a threat, and we don’t get awards. (Applause.) It’s an honor to get an award! It really is. … I owe my success to a lot of people who are a lot smarter than I am. … If you can explain conservatism, inspire others to explain it, inspire others to understand it, which helps them to go explain it, then you create a little army that manifests and grows among families, neighborhoods, and communities. That’s what’s happened since, in my case, 1988. But it also started long before I came along, and that’s the importance of this award being named after Mr. Buckley. There are many godfathers of this movement. You could say Goldwater and Reagan, but if Bill Buckley hadn’t done what he did, none of the rest of this would have happened. (Applause.) Folks, there are so many really intelligent conservative thinkers, intellects. They’ve been laboring in the basements. They had been, and some of them still are. … My life is the product of their work. They’ve inspired my own thinking. They’ve given me confidence to believe what I believe. But they provided an education above and beyond what I got in the classroom, which wasn’t much. I flunked speech in college twice. … I finally quit college …. So I went out, and it was when I left school that I realized, “Uh-oh. I’m going to have to be able to demonstrate what I know. I’m not going to have a degree that says I know anything, and I’m not going to have a degree that gets my foot in the door,” and that started me on my quest to learn and absorb as much as I could about the things that were passionate to me and the things that I felt instinctively were right. Without the Bill Buckleys and all the other names — we could list these names that I have been able to benefit from their work — none of the rest of this would have happened. I’m forever grateful that it’s just come to me, it’s benefited me in the process of timing, all of their work and their lives happened to coincide with mine. You know, the Media Research Center was at the beginning, and set a standard and had the guts to go after the left. Now Brent and his organization are being copied. For once it’s the left that’s bringing up the rear, except they do it far differently than the way Brent’s organization does. They lie. They take things out of context. … I want to thank the Media Research Center. They have been great to me. They have been an invaluable resource, and they have been supportive. … I wouldn’t be where I am without people like Brent Bozell and Mr. Buckley. ... All of the friends that I have made have all stood behind me and have given me the confidence to move on and to continue to do what I do, and I love it. There is nothing else I would rather do.

Arthur Sulzberger, Jr.: Neal Boortz “It wasn’t supposed to be this way. You weren’t supposed to be graduating into an America fighting a misbegotten war in a foreign land. You weren’t supposed to be graduating into a world where we are still fighting for fundamental human rights, whether it’s the rights of immigrants to start a new life, or the rights of gays to marry, or the rights of women to choose. You weren’t supposed to be graduating into a world where oil still drove policy and environmentalists have to fight relentlessly for every gain. You weren’t. But you are. And for that, I’m sorry.” Michael Steele, former lieutenant governor of Michael Steele

The I’m Not a Political Genius but I Play One on TV Award

WINNER: Rosie O’Donnell, co-host of ABC’s The View, Sept. 12, 2006. Rosie O’Donnell: “As a result of the [9/11] attack and the killing of nearly 3,000 innocent people, we invaded two countries and killed innocent people in their countries.” Co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck: “But do you understand that, that the belief funding those attacks, okay, that is widespread. And if you take radical Islam and if you want to talk about what’s going on there, you have to—” O’Donnell (interrupting): “Wait just one second. Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam in a country like America [loud applause].” Conservative and Emmy Award winner Pat Sajak, host of Wheel of Fortune, accepted the DisHonors on behalf of Ms. O’Donnell. “Last night I was in church in our neighborhood — it was our Wednesday night beheadings,” quipped Mr. Sajak in reference to Rosie O’Donnell’s verbal slap at Christianity.

Awards #4 and #5 were presented by Mary Matalin

AWARD #5:

Puppy Love Award

WINNER: ABC World News anchor Charles Gibson, Jan. 4, 2007. Charles Gibson: “For the first time in the 218-year history of the Congress, a woman was voted by her colleagues to be Speaker of the House. Nancy Pelosi, Democrat from California, took the gavel. But in a picture perhaps even more symbolic, the new Speaker was on the floor for a time, holding her 6-year-old [really 6-month-old] grandson, all the while giving directions on how events were to proceed. It seemed the ultimate in multitasking: Taking care of the children, and the country.” American Civil Rights Institute President Ward Connerly accepted the award on Charles Gibson’s behalf, commenting that House Speaker Pelosi “has brought her grandchildren to the world’s ultimate playpen, known as the Congress, so they can romp and frolic with all the other 400-plus children.”

Pat Sajak

AWARD #4:

Tin Foil Hat Award for Crazy Conspiracy Theories

WINNER: CNN’s Jack Cafferty, on the Jan. 19, 2006 edition of The Situation Room. Jack Cafferty: “The last time we got a tape from Osama bin Laden was right before the 2004 presidential election. Now here we are, four days away from hearings starting in Washington into the wiretapping of America’s telephones without bothering to get a court order or a warrant, and up pops another tape from Osama bin Laden. Coincidence? Who knows.” Mary Matalin, former adviser to President Bush, presented the award. In addressing the crowd, she said, “You have never made a greater investment in this country than in the MRC, thank you all.”
