I happen to know a little bit about Alkade and Fay and they are a first rate lobbying enterprise. This woman did everything you are supposed to do as a legitimate lobbyist and came in the front door and brought the parties together and that's all she could do. Congress couldn't do it's job without K Street: I mean, if you are serious about the Market Place of Ideas, K Street is what it looks like and Alkade and Fay is how honest palaver occurs. My complaint about DeLay's K Street Project wasn't that he was trying to corner the market on ideas, its that he was trying to define the market, itself. It is a principle of conservatism to stack the deck and sex up the intelligence. But if you are serious about change, you have to understand how things are working, now, and what doesn't need fixing. Alkade and Fay, as a proxy for the majority of legitimate lobbyists on K Street, ain't broke and what they do is one of the things that's not broke in Washington. If McCain had been Charley Wilson, it would have seemed unnatural if they weren't having sex. First of all, Charley Wilson was bachelor most of his public career and, secondly, he was a Democrat with military service. Democrats have significantly different norms regarding recreational sex: I mean, the difference between McCain and Wilson is the difference between Tail Hook and élan of Houston, Dallas and K Street. The significant fact to me in this story is that it illustrates how male penis envy pervades any culture organized around the principles of conservatism. The McCain campaign, at that time, consisted of 2 distinct cultural coalitions: the Fascist true believers who expect perfect ideological conformity in their candidate and have an utter fascination with what everybody else is doing with their dicks; and the people like Charley Black who are engaged in the existential pragmatism of actually winning an election. McCain can pretend that he was not being influenced by any lobbyists he actually meets face to face, but he cannot pretend that every bit of legislation which reported out of his committee while he was chairman were not crafted according to the principles of conservatism. And that is why things are so fucked in the economy. And the people McCain needs to suck up to in order to win are the people who are voting for Grover Norquist by proxy by voting for the white male members of the Republican Study Committee. The good news is, Rush Limbaugh needs McCain far more than McCain needs Grover Norquist. Grover Norquist brags about how he was able to deny Bush the Elder his second term for breaking his No New Taxes pledge and, if I was McCain, I'd believe him. Bushie began to dance to Grover Norquist's fiddle when he hired Karl Rove to elect him governor and McCain was dancing the same jig the whole time he was Chairman of the Commerce Committee. McCain's own campaign, by its actions, suggested that there was an improper sexual relationship between McCain and Alcade and Fay. The NY Times didn't make that up. McCain had a working relationship with a lobbyist in areas of his purview, which is his job. At that time, McCain had oversight of the FCC, which has had 2 successive Chairmen, Michael Powel and Kevin Martin, ideologically dedicated to imposing the principles of conservatism on public airwaves. Powell and Martin have done far more damage to the 1st Amendment than anything Alcade and Fay might do and Chairman/Ranking Member McCain hasn't raised much in the way of Holy hell about this outright larceny because it is perfectly congruent with his moral values, which are based on the principles of conservatism according to Phil Gramm. A vote for McCain is a vote for Phil Gramm. And that's the truth. Just for the record, Michael Steele is "(t)he Running Mate McCain Needs" (with a tip of the hat to GF Will in Outlook, this instant). Barack Obama is the Democrat version of Putney Swope. Michael Steele is the Republican version of Putney Swope. For that matter, Bob Johnson is the Republican version of Putney Swope. Michael Steele appeals to African−Americans who are hard−wired Republicans, but vote Democrat because of the structural racism embedded in the principles of conservatism and the Karl Rove wing of the GOP. I mean, the important color in Putney Swope is GREEN in a coin of the realm kind of way. Both Obama and Steele are at the leading edge of what Travis Smiley calls the Covenant Movement in Black America. From my perspective, this agenda is a force multiplier for the theme of Atonement emerging from the Million Man March. Obama and Steele are as fierce about being American as Michelle Obama is in her joy in being proud of America. After 25 years of conservatism and 19 years of Rush Limbaugh, I feel exactly the same way. Rights foolishness will go away. It was everything El Rushbo could do to keep from cheering the sentiments for exactly the clarity of their intent as it reflects the principles of conservatism. After all, is not the Excellence in Broadcast Network the home of the School for Advanced Studies of Conservatism? Governor Meachim's repeal of MLK Day reflects perfectly the principles of conservatism. Just for the record, the only thing Ralph Nader is going to accomplish is to steal votes from Ron Paul.
