Utah also ranked 13th in the NCAA in all-time wins, and was one of just 22 schools to have 1,400 victories at the start of the season. • The Utes have won three national championships, winning the 1916 AAU championship, 1944 NCAA championship and 1947 NIT title. Utah is one of only 33 schools to win the NCAA Division I men’s basketball title. • Utah has made four trips to the NCAA Final Four: 1944 (champions), 1961 (4th), 1966 (4th) and 1998 (runner-up). • The Utes have played in the NCAA Tournament 23 times and have a 32-26 record (.552). Only 13 schools have appeared in the NCAAs more times than Utah. • During the decade of the ‘90s, the Utes won the eighth-most games in NCAA Division I with a 25076 record. Utah’s .767 winning percentage in the last 10 years also ranked as the eighth-best in the nation. • The past five seasons, Utah had the 12th-highest winning percentage in NCAA Division I (.756) with a 121-39 record.

Rating the Rookies

With only four lettermen returning from last season and 10 scholarship players on the roster, Rick Majerus has played his freshmen extensively early in the season. Here’s a breakdown of how the quartet of Richard Chaney (G/F, 6-4, 186), Tim Drisdom (G, 6-3, 203), Chris Jackson (C, 6-11, 242) and Bryant Markson (F, 6-6, 182) has been producing. • In the win over Weber State, both Chaney and Markson had career highs in points. Chaney had a game-high 17 points (7-9 FG, 1-2 3FG, 2-4 FT) and four rebounds in 17 minutes. Markson went for 12 points (5-8 FG, 1-3 3FG, 1-2 FT) and four boards in 13 minutes. Figuring in Drisdom’s six points, the trio accounted for 35 of Utah’s 72 points on 15-for-21 shooting. • Drisdom, who’s started every game at point guard, leads the Utes in assists (3.5 apg) and is fourth in rebounding (3.1 rpg). He is also shooting 44.0 percent from three-point range, making 11-of-25. • Chaney (7.1 ppg) and Drisdom (5.2 ppg) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, on the team in scoring. Markson (4.6 ppg) is seventh. • All four freshmen are shooting above 40 percent from the field, with Chaney at 49.3 percent, Drisdom at 46.0 percent, Jackson at 58.3 percent and Markson at 52.2 percent.

I Team Notes
Game #13 Rewind
Tim Frost posted season-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds as Utah outlasted Saint Mary's of California 65-59 Monday night. Frost, a transfer from Portland of Saint Mary’s West Coast Conference, made a putback with 1:20 left to quell a Gaels surge and ensure Utah’s eighth win in the last nine games. Nick Jacobson added 10 points for the Utes (10-2), who have won five straight. Freshman Daniel Kickert had 21 points and Samuel Saint-Jean had 19 for Saint Mary’s. Both marks were career-highs but they didn’t get much help. The rest of the team combined to shoot 8 of 22 and committed 13 turnovers. Saint Mary’s (7-6) also failed to overcome a 21-9 rebounding deficit in the second half against the physical Utes. The Utes held Saint Mary’s to just six points in a 10:14 stretch of the second half as they built a 13point lead. Frost, who had six offensive rebounds, scored four points during that 10-3 run that gave Utah a 57-44 lead with 5:09 to play. The Gaels, who forced Utah into 16 turnovers, caused a couple of Utah miscues with tight defense in a 10-3 surge capped by Adam Caporn’s three-pointer to cut Utah’s lead to 60-54 with 2:11 to play. But Saint Mary’s couldn’t get within five points the rest of the way. Chase Poole, the Gaels’ leading scorer, had just four points before fouling out with 2:29 to play. Utah now leads the series 14-2 and has won the last nine in a row against the Gaels.

Game #12 Rewind

Freshman Richard Chaney scored a career-high 17 points as Utah cruised to a 72-58 win over Weber State on Jan. 3 in Salt Lake City. Chaney shot 7-of-9 from the field in just 17 minutes and fellow reserve freshman Bryant Markson added 12 points for Utah (9-3). Slobodan Ocokoljic, a Serbian transfer from Ohio State, had his best WSU (9-5) game with 17 points and Jermaine Boyette added 14 points, all in the second half. Britton Johnsen, who played his second game with a soft cast after right thumb surgery on Dec. 18, couldn’t shoot confidently but still scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Utah stayed perfect at home. The Utes shot 53 percent, due largely to the play of Utah’s trio of freshmen, who made 15-of-21 from the field. In addition to Chaney and Markson, starting point guard Tim Drisdom made 3-of-4 shots. Weber State played its sixth straight road game while the Utes hosted their second of five straight home contests. Utah has now won two in a row over the Wildcats who broke the Utes’ nation-best 54 game home winning streak the last time they met in Salt Lake City in 2000. Utah outrebounded Weber State 33-25 and the Wildcats shot 43 percent shooting from the field, including just 30.4 percent in the first half.

Mountain West Conference Success

Huntsman Center to Host NCAA’s in 2003 and 2006

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament returns to the University of Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center for its 12th booking in 19 years with first and second round games March 20 and 22. The NCAA also recently announced that the Huntsman Center will host first and second round tournament games in 2006. The JMHC ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most NCAA Tournament basketball games hosted, with 69 games having been played in the facility. Long recognized as a site of championships, the Huntsman Center played host to the 1979 NCAA Basketball Championship “Dream Match-Up” featuring Indiana State’s Larry Bird and Michigan State’s Magic Johnson—deemed one of the most successful Final Fours ever held. The men’s NCAA regional tournament received a Huntsman Center booking in 1984, ‘85, and ‘87, and the NCAA first and second rounds took place in the arena in 1988, ‘89, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93, ‘95, ‘97 and 2000.

In its fourth year of existence, the Mountain West Conference is quickly establishing itself as one of the top basketball leagues in the nation. The MWC has send at least four of its eight teams to postseason play in each of its first three seasons. • The MWC annually ranks among the top five conferences in average attendance per game. • The Mountain West sent a record six teams to postseason play in 200102, making the conference one of only two leagues in the country to have 75 percent of its teams competing in postseason tournaments. • A record three MWC teams (Utah, San Diego State and Wyoming) competed in the 2002 NCAA Tournament. BYU, New Mexico and UNLV were invited to the NIT. • MWC teams won 86 percent of their home nonconference games last season with a record of 55-9.

Rick Majerus
Head Coach • 14th Season at Utah Marquette, 1970
Entering the 2002-03 season, his 19th season as a college head coach, Rick Majerus’ career winning percentage of .740 was the third-highest among active Division I coaches and 16th all-time. Among active coaches, only Roy Williams (Kansas) and Bob Huggins (Cincinnati) have better winning percentages. By notching his 350th career victory with a 56-49 win at Brigham Young on Jan. 15, 2000, Majerus became one of just nine coaches all-time to reach the 350 wins plateau in 16 seasons; only five coaches have won 350 games in fewer seasons than Majerus. Majerus’ feats have earned him widespread recognition. While at Utah, he has won five National Coach of the Year awards: Basketball Times (1991), UPI (1991), Playboy (1992, ‘98) and John Wooden (1998). Majerus is also a seven-time District Coach of the Year (1991, ‘93, ‘95, ‘96, ‘97, ‘98, ‘99) and a five-time Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (1991, ‘93, ‘95, ‘97, ‘99). Majerus, who has never had a losing season, has averaged 21 wins a year over the course of his career. He has won 20 games 12 times and 30 games twice. Majerus’ Utah teams have averaged 22 wins a year. What Majerus’ teams have accomplished since the beginning of his tenure at Utah is astounding. Consider: • In the decade of the ‘90s, Utah ranked eighth among NCAA Division I programs in both wins (250) and winning percentage (.767). • Over the last five seasons (1997-2002), the Utes have the 12th-best winning percentage in NCAA Division I (.756) with a 121-39 record. • The Utes have made nine trips to the NCAA Tournament and 11 total appearances in postseason play during the Majerus era. • Utah has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 four times and made back-to-back Elite Eight appearances in 1997 and 1998. The Utes also played in the 1998 NCAA Final Four, losing to Kentucky in the national championship game. • During the Majerus era, Utah has the 13th-most wins (16) and the 14th-best winning percentage (.640) in NCAA Tournament play. • Utah advanced to the NIT Final Four in 1992, placing third. • Utah has won nine regular-season conference titles, including seven in a row 19952001. • Utah won the WAC Tournament championship in 1995, ‘97 and ‘99. • His players have been named All-America five times—twice consensus choices— conference player of the year eight times and first team all-conference 19 times.
