auction & Dinner | october 12th 2008 01 Dear FareStart “Night on the Town” Guests— Welcome! We are glad that you are here tonight, spending the evening with us and helping us celebrate the achievements of FareStart students and graduates. We also appreciate that you’re here to help generate more funds so that we can continue increasing opportunities for the men and women who come to us seeking a second chance. Our motto since moving into our building at 7th & Virginia is “Meeting the Promise.” For us, that means fulfilling the commitment we made to our donors—and the community at large—that our new larger facility would enable us to serve more individuals than ever before. And we are doing just that. In 2008, we will serve over 50% more individuals than we did in ’07. Not only that, but we are on pace this year to graduate 100 individuals from our program—nearly twice as many as last year—and we are placing more folks in jobs than ever before. It is YOU who helps make that possible… thank you! Within three years, we will have fully doubled the number of individuals to whom we provide job training and placement in the food service industry—providing even more people the opportunity to transform their lives and end the cycle of homelessness. We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in making this great leap forward possible—and to let you know we continue to work very hard to earn your support and confidence. Please enjoy our gala event tonight. We are only able to celebrate these accomplishments thanks to your support, for which we are deeply grateful. With sincere appreciation, Ashley Hulsey President, Farestart Board oF directors Megan Karch executive director 02 03 Table Of Contents tonight’s Program Farestart Mission About FareStart Auction Steering Committee Leadership & Development Staff Board of Directors menu Patron Guest Reception Hors d’oeuvres Reception Wine-paired Dinner auction Golden Raffle Information Centerpiece Auction Rules Dessert Auction Live Auction Fund-a-Student sPonsors Sponsor Thanks Special Thanks Advertisements acknoWledgements Special Thanks Auction Donors 04 05 06 08 08 09 12 12 13 16 17 18 19 25 60 73 74 76 81 82 04 Tonight’s Program 4:30pm PATRON GUEST OYSTER & CHAMPAGNE RECEPTION Golden Ticket Raffle Sales Silent Auctions Open 5:30pm HORS d’OEUVRES, PASSED WINE & COCKTAIL RECEPTION 6:35pm PINK SILENT AUCTION CLOSING 6:45pm BRONzE SILENT AUCTION CLOSING 6:55pm WINE & PLATTER AUCTION CLOSING 6:55pm SEATING FOR DINNER & LIVE AUCTION 7:00pm WELCOME & WINE-PAIRED DINNER Master of Ceremonies Centerpiece Close-out Golden Raffle Ticket Drawing Dessert Auction 7:30pm LIVE AUCTION Live Auction Packages Fund-A-Student Live Auction Packages 9:15pm CHECK OUT OPENS Master of Ceremonies Kevin Benedict, Entertainer Auctioneers John Curley, King 5 Evening Magazine Host Mardi Newman, Seattle Weekly’s “Best Auctioneer of 2005” Mardi's formal wear by Ropa Bella in the Park Speakers Megan Karch, Executive Director, FareStart Ashley Hulsey, President, Board of Directors, FareStart 05 OUR MISSION FareStart provides a community that transforms lives by empowering homeless and disadvantaged men, women, and families to achieve self-sufficiency through life skills, job training, and employment in the food service industry. 06 07 Adult training program Since 1992, FareStart has provided job training and life skills training to more than 2,400 homeless and disadvantaged men and women. FareStart’s 16-week adult culinary training program combines intensive, hands-on food service work with classroom instruction. Students also complete a series of life skills classes to prepare themselves for employment and self-sustainability. Early in 2007, FareStart moved into its new, expanded home at 7th and Virginia, making a commitment to the community to double the number of individuals served by 2011. FareStart is well on its way to exceeding this ambitious enrollment goal. Through mid-September of this year, 71 students had graduated from the rigorous training program. We project that in 2010, FareStart will graduate more than 150 people. Along with growing numbers, the training experience has markedly improved. Fully equipped and spacious kitchens, a faster-paced restaurant, three classrooms, and an expanded team of dedicated chef instructors allow FareStart to prepare graduates to step into their new job with confidence. Youth training program GUEST CHEF NIGHT every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., premier chefs work with FareStart students to serve a three-course gourmet meal for $24.95. CONTRACT MEALS service provides nutritious meals to childcare centers, including Head Start programs, and homeless shelters around the Seattle area 365 days a year. For more information: (206) 267-7619. FareStart community On any given night in Seattle, more than 800 youth are homeless. The Barista Training and Education Program is a collaborative effort between YouthCare and FareStart. The program teaches youth, ages 16-21, barista job skills, while providing the long-term support necessary to explore personal goals and prepare for longterm employment and education. While the program’s focus is on job training and placement, the ultimate goal and commitment is to re-engage homeless youth with school and family. FareStart businesses FareStart’s success comes from connecting students to the larger FareStart community, who offer support and a positive environment. FareStart’s supportive community is made up of everyone who interacts with students and supports the program: generous donors, guest chefs, volunteers, restaurant guests, partnering social service providers, and FareStart staff and board members. The FareStart Restaurant, a beautiful gift from the community, is the place where FareStart connects with the larger community, coming together to change lives. FareStart businesses generate more than 50% of the organization’s annual operating budget. Supporting FareStart businesses is a great way to support the FareStart program and students. Business growth will allow FareStart to serve more students. In 2007 FareStart saw a 250% increase in restaurant sales, a 38% increase in Catering, and a 40% increase in Guest Chef Night. 08 09 Auction Steering Committee Gerry Adams, FareStart Board Member Connie Clark-Redmond, FS Board Member Don Edmond, Community Volunteer Peter Ehrlichman, Dorsey & Whitney Ken Glass, FS Board Member Dan Johnson, FS Development Director Molly Hancock, FS Board Member Paige Linton, Community Volunteer Stan Mark, Direct Services, Inc.
