OUR miSSiON The Big Sky yOUTh EmPOwERmENT PROjEcT, iNc. believes that youth are the world’s greatest asset. Our programs target high school-aged disadvantaged youth, providing them the opportunity for empowerment through outdoor activities and life skills curricula. We believe our responsibility is two-fold: to provide these experiences to the youth at no cost, and build community through pro-social involvement. Big Sky yOUTh EmPOwERmENT PROjEcT, iNc. Last summer I found out about BYEP after I got in trouble with my family and the law. It sounded like so much fun. We went white water rafting which looked scary and hard to do at first, but it was a blast. We also went rock climbing which was really intense. But, I found that with enough encouragement and determination, I could make it to the top. Another activity we did was horseback riding. The ride was very long and steep. It was one of the most extreme experiences I’ve ever had. I feel much stronger as a person because I made it up and down in one piece. On that trip I got to see a wolf which has always been a hope of mine. Not all of our experiences were so “extreme.” We also went for a cool hike up at Grotto Falls above Hyalite Reservoir. It was a great time to talk and open up to my mentors and the other girls in my group. It was really nice to have someone to talk to who would listen to me and care about what I was saying. I had a great time when I went to the Workshops too. We got to know and trust each other in Workshops and I learned a lot about myself. Now that I’ve experienced all these situations with BYEP, I realize that I’m doing better in my life and I can have fun without getting into trouble. I want to thank everyone for having this program, for funding it, for being Mentors, and for being Participants. Britney – Youth Participant 2007 Jena-Youth Participant 2007 GETTING OUTSIDE, GROWING INSIDE www.byep.org 1 A mESSAgE fROm PETE – I am constantly honored to be part of an organization which brings together amazing adults who care about their community and work with remarkable youth who never cease to astound me with their resiliency. The Big Sky Youth Empowerment Project has grown significantly since our humble beginnings in 2002. Youth applicant numbers, community support, and an overwhelming number of volunteers are a testament to the vital service our organization provides for Gallatin and Park Counties in Montana. Fiscal year 2007 proved to be our most successful year to date; we have hopes that 2008 will be even better. We served more youth than ever before, raised more capital, and involved a record number of volunteers. Our two special events, Spring Run Off and The Big Brown Trout, outperformed the same fiscal year 2006 events threefold! We continued to build our internal capacity by hiring a three-quarter time program director which, by my account, was the best decision we have made to date. Having Dave handle our programs allows me to focus my time on development, internal capacity, and strategy for our future. We are excited to continue growing our service to the community in 2008. We will add four new programs to our existing repertoire of adventure-based opportunities. Our revenue stream will improve with grant solicitation, an additional special event, and major donor development. Our board of directors has both grown in numbers and shifted to a team based philosophy allowing for more efficient work management. Lastly, as we continue to gain traction, we will be looking for a permanent home for our offices and programs. Thank you for believing in the Big Sky Youth Empowerment Project. I know we are making a BIG impact on the lives of the youth and their families in our community. I cannot thank you enough for your investment in our community. A mESSAgE fROm DAvE – Having completed my first year as Program Director I am thrilled to be working with the Big Sky Youth Empowerment Project. Simply put, I’ve landed my dream job! I feel that my MA in Special Education coupled with my extensive work with young people in myriad environments serves this organization well. I wholeheartedly believe that our adventure-based programming is not only effective, but extremely attractive to both Mentors and Participants alike. The 2007 winter and summer programs marked our largest applicant pool to date; over 175 youths applied for 60 Participant slots, while over 90 adults applied for 36 Mentor positions. In selecting our Mentors, I am quite fortunate to have enthusiastic, encouraging adults willing to volunteer roughly 150 hours of service over a 12 week program. Our weekly workshops (based on five core competencies consisting of Teamwork & Trust, Communication, Identity, Healthy Relationships, and Conflict Resolution) provide a supportive environment for expanding perspectives and learning new skills. The weekend activities (skiing, snowboarding, fly fishing, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and high ropes course challenges) provide a unique and thrilling opportunity for our groups to celebrate the local outdoors and hone the skills presented in the Workshops. As I look forward to the 2008 programming, we will have a total of 14 groups (six Participants & three Mentors per group) allowing us to work with 84 youth and 42 adults. At our inception six years ago, we had one group consisting of five Participants and five Mentors! I am confident that BYEP is making a significant difference in our community! NUMBER OF PEOPLE viSiON fOR OUR fUTURE We are laying out a vision for the future of BYEP which includes a future home for our programs, offices, four Suburbans, and plethora of gear by as soon as next year. We feel that having an actual space will allow us to expand our service to youth from Gallatin and Park Counties. In terms of Programs we will establish a three tier curriculum which will be in place over the next 3 years. Tier 1 will serve 8th – 10th graders and will reflect the programs that we are currently running. Tier 2 will serve 11th – 12th graders and will focus on deeper emotional growth as well as service to the community and BYEP. Tier 3 will serve youth aged 18 – 21 years old who are graduates from the traditional BYEP programs. This Tier will involve work apprenticeships and the transition from high school to adulthood. As we strive to become a world class nonprofit organization we look forward to implementing our exciting strategy to broaden our impact on the lives of youth from Gallatin and Park Counties, Montana. Our community and environment has so much to offer for outdoor pursuits, it is unfortunate that not everyone has the opportunity to enjoy them. Through BYEP, I am able to share my experiences and passion for the wilderness with kids that can’t always get outside. I was surprised at how the benefits extended beyond the great outdoor adventures. Everyone – Participants and Mentors alike – learned about themselves and others throughout the program. I loved watching our GirlPower group grow from six individuals and three mentors to a connected and considerate team of nine who encouraged each other on everything from rock walls to horseback adventures. Sarah – Mentor 2007 Volunteer mentors continue to be the backbone of our organization. These generous individuals give 10 hours per week over the course of our 12 week programs. This translates into approximately 170 hours of volunteer time in a seasonal program. We are enormously thankful for their dedication. These people are a testament that each of us has the opportunity to make our community a better place. mENTORS WINTER 2007 SNoWSpoRTS Adam Tanner Sheli Waltemath Ersin Allen Ozer Kaila Debates Nico Shannon Megan Markovich Katherine Isaacson Andy Dziadosz Luke Rice Lisa Meyer Kara Meier Jay Stanley Andrew St. Pierre Kelly Haugen Natalie Davis Danny McGrath Josh Wood Kenny Gough Bethany Zellmer Jason DeCoux Serena Finn Tim Herzog SUMMER 2007 Fly FIShINg Dan Durham Rob Savage Jay Stanley Ethan Hamilton Travis Myers Mario Walther Scott Davidson gIRl poWER Lisa Meyer Claire Cielinski Heather Ojala Kathryn Bartholomew Melinda Monroe Sarah Eby STAff Pete MacFadyen – Executive Director (1.0 FTE) Dave Granger – Program Director (.75 FTE) BOARD Of DiREcTORS: Bob Buzzas – President Nancy Franklin – Vice President Jake Cook – Treasurer Lee Cook – Secretary Mike Harrelson – Board Member at Large Kerrie Foote –Board Member at Large Jonathan Kitchens –Board Member at Large Annie Stinson –Board Member at Large Alisa Allgood –Board Member at Large Dana Pepper –Board Member at Large 4 GETTING OUTSIDE, GROWING INSIDE www.byep.org 5 mAjOR SPONSORS Big Sky Resort – donated lift tickets Quiksilver Foundation – donated equipment JC Billion – donated and discounted vehicles Freeskier Magazine – donated equipment Nothwave - These numbers reflect a parallel increase both in youth served and mentors enrolled (pg. 3). We are proud to have maintained diverse income sources while at the same time allocating expense where it matters most, to our youth. Please feel free to contact us with additional questions regarding our finances, to view copies of our budgets, or to obtain our federal form 990. iNcOmE 2007 3% 7% 8% 35% 21% 26% In-Kind 35% Special Events 26% Grants 21% Annual Giving Campaign 8% Major Donors 7% Corporate Sponsors 3% total income: $304,957 As a mentor for BYEP Girl Power, I witnessed each girl in our group taking a risk to try an activity that scared her. Every single girl was a success many times this summer. The girls encouraged one another as we rode horses down a steep rainy trail, they belayed one another as we climbed rock walls, they worked together as a cohesive unit while rafting, and cheered for one another as they took the “Leap of Faith” on the high ropes course. I was very lucky to be part of such an amazing team of Participants and Mentors. It was rewarding to spend time with girls who appreciated each day and its events. None of these girls would have learned what they are capable of without our BYEP Girl Power program this summer. I feel that I have become a better angler and a better role model for my peers and friends. It’s nice to go away from town and hear the sounds of birds, the sound of the river, and breathe the fresh mountain air while catching a big trout. One of my favorite memories was fishing near Big Timber, then going to the land bridge and swimming out to a little island with the Bozeman Fly Fishing crew. I would like to thank Pete (executive director) and Dave for making this program possible. And, I would like to thank the Board of Directors and also the Mentors; Ethan, Mario, and Jay for teaching me great knowledge about fly fishing. This is a great program and I hope it will be here for years to come.
