Spring is in the air even though the weather has not been consistent; you can feel that the good weather is just around the corner. With great weather comes great project opportunities, so start looking at all the opportunities that are coming up and join or create a team of your own to get this spring off right. I would like every member to come up with one project that they would like to get involved with. It can be a Chapter favorite or anything new. You are only limited by your imagination, the more creative the project is the better. If you have a new project idea let’s talk about it, sometimes numerous people have similar project ideas and with combined efforts those ideas can become reality. So Cary-Grove, I challenge each and every one of you to jump on a team or create a team to run a project that gets you excited, whatever area that it happens to be in: community, individual development, chapter management, membership or international. Thanks Cary-Grove for a great first quarter and let’s make the second quarter even better. Tony Colletti April If we missed your birthday, happy birthday. Please contact me with your birthday month. Speaking of which, with the warmer weather finally here, there are some upcoming projects we can look forward to. If you haven’t heard, Cathy Waldo has agreed to chair the family campout this year. While this project won’t be running until June or July, Cathy’s main goal with this project is fun and she’s seeking any new ideas for the campout. Look for this project to be presented soon. A project that possibly may run is having members march in the Memorial Day Parade to give our chapter a PR boost in the community. Kathy McCowan has graciously stepped up to agree to chair this project. However, with this being a popular weekend for camping and traveling, it’s unsure how many members will be available to march in the parades in Cary and Fox River Grove. If you are interested, contact Kathy or myself. I would like to thank Gail Overstreet-Williams and her committee for stepping forward to plan the 45th Reunion Social, which will gather many Past Presidents together to celebrate the history of our great chapter. Learn more about this outstanding project when Gail presents her CPG at the April GM. That’s all I have for now. Thanks for reading and see you at the GM. Sincerely, Steve Repsys 2007 CMVP Individual Development Vice President At the April General Meeting, we will be doing an exercise that was taught in PRIME Training. This exercise teaches you the four ways people learn and what ways you best learn. It is a great exercise to learn more about yourself as well as other Jaycees. This is even a great exercise to bring to the workplace as a team building tool. Here are a few projects that we have done in the past that we can do again or change for 2007: ?? Jaycee Idol Competition ?? Fantasy Football ?? Debate Training ?? College and Kids Financial Advice ?? Create A Caption ?? Resume Writing ?? Jaycees Lingo Bingo ?? Hidden Meanings This area is an opportunity for you to enhance your business, career or Jaycee life. If you are a service provider, you could t alk to us about a topic that you think would benefit all of us. Share the knowledge that you have with the rest of the chapter. So pleas e step up and “Get into the Game”. Tony Colletti Page Membership Development Vice President This year has gotten off to a slow start with membership. But now that we have a stack of community surveys with potential new members, we can really start focusing in on recruiting new members and the future leaders of this organization. We are looking for volunteers to help with contacting these potential new members so if you are interested please contact me. We would love your help. The Board is committed to bringing in new members and they are working on a plan to have some socials/networking events and new member orientations to get these potential new members to become a new member of this great organization. We are also working on corporate recruiting which has been successful in the past for Cary-Grove as well as many other chapters across the state. So please think about stepping up and helping out in this very important part of being a Jaycee, keeping the Jaycee movement going. I have an incentive for all of you to think about for every new off age member that you recruit your name will be entered into a raffle for (2) Cubs tickets. If you recruit four new members your name will be entered four times. This will only increase your chances to win. If Cubs tickets don’t get you excited tell me what does get you excited and we can see if we can work something out. This incentive is good through the month of August so let’s see who can recruit the most members. Tony Colletti The following people are up for renewal in the next few months: May – Marcus Bunda, Liz Mammoser, Cathy Waldo June – Patrick Hillebrand, Stephen Repsys July – Michele Ferreira, Rich Koepp Let the Board know of any ideas that you have to attract new members to this Great organization. We want more people to “Get into the Game.” Ask a friend to join! Share in the fun! Cary-Grove Jaycees Membership Application Name:_________________________ Address:_______________________ ______________________________ Phone:_________________________ Cell:___________________________ Birthdate:_______________________ Spouse’s name:__________________ Referred by:_____________________ Community Development Vice President Here is an update of the Great Community projects in progress right now: ?? Easter Egg Hunt – The Easter Egg Hunt ran on March 31, even though it rained 30 minutes prior to the event we had a good turnout. Kathy McCowan and her committee did a wonderful job. We received numerous community surveys in Cary and Fox River Grove. Three lucky families even won Cubs and Bulls tickets (thanks Mitch for the Bulls tickets). ?? Scholarships – Mitch Cohen, the Project Manager of the Scholarship Committee, has Kelly Hulata working on setting up a judging night, more information to come. If you know of any graduating seniors in the 60013 and 60021 zip codes, please ask them to apply for the scholarship program. The deadline for applications is April 16 th. ?? Blood Drive – We are still looking for a Project Manager for this project. If you are interested in being on the committee please let me know. Heartland Blood Center really wants to work with us again as a result of last years Blood Drive being so successful. One thing to keep in mind with this project is that you are truly making a difference in people’s lives. Every pint could represent a life saved, so please think about “Getting into the Game” on this project. ?? Little Fins Fishing Derby – We are still looking for a Project Manager for this project. If you are interested in being on the committee please let me know. Last year Dave Mammoser ran this project and enjoyed it. There were over 20 kids that came out, young and old, and enjoyed the fishing derby. This is another long-standing project that is a lot of fun. If any of these projects interest you, and you would like to get a Team together, give me a call. If you have new ideas on how to enhance these projects or new project ideas please do contact me. I would love to hear the ideas. Tony Colletti Community Meeting Schedule TOWN/GROUP Cary Fox River Grove Oakwood Hills Cary District 26 FRG District 3 HS District 155 Cary Park District FRG Rec. Page 7 Mother's Day in the United States was first proclaimed around 1870 in Boston by Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation, and Howe called for it to be observed each year nationally in 1872. As originally envisioned, Howe's "Mother's Day" was a call for pacifism and disarmament by women. The original Mother's Day Proclamation was as follows: Nor violence indicate possession. Arise then...women of this day! Arise, all women who have breasts! Whether your baptism be of water or of tears! Say firmly: "We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agen cies, Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, For caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We, the women of one country, Will be too tender of those of another country To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs." From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice." Blood does not wipe out dishonor, Early "Mother's Day" was mostly marked by women's peace groups. A common early activity was the meeting of groups of mothers whose sons had fought or died on opposite sides of the American Civil War. The first known observance of Mother's Day in the U.S. occurred in Albion, Michigan, on May 13, 1877, the second Sunday of the month. According to local legend, Albion pioneer, Juliet Calhoun Blakeley, stepped up to complete the sermon of the Rev. Myron Daughterty, who was distraught because an anti-temperance group had forced his son and two other temperance advocates to spend the night in a saloon and become publicly drunk. In the pulpit, Blakeley called on other mothers to join her. Blakeley's two sons, both travelling salesmen, were so moved that they vowed to return each year to pay tribute to her and embarked on a campaign to urge their business contacts to do likewise. At their urging, in the early 1880s, the Methodist Episcopal Church in Albion set aside the second Sunday in May to recognize the special contributions of mothers. On February 4, 1904, South Bend, Indiana resident Frank E. Hering made the first Public Plea and started his own campaign for a national observance of "Mother's Day" in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1907, Mother's Day was first celebrated in a small, private way by Anna Jarvis in Grafton, West Virginia, to commemorate the anniversary of her mother's death two years earlier on May 9, 1905. Jarvis's mother, named Ann Jarvis, had been active in Mother's Day campaigns for peace and worker's safety and health since end of American Civil War. The younger Jarvis launched a quest to get wider recognition of Mother's Day. The celebration organized by Jarvis on May 10, 1908 involved 407 children with their mothers at the Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton (this church is now the International Mother's Day Shrine). Grafton is, thus, the place recognized as the birthplace of Mother's Day. The subsequent campaign to recognize Mother's Day was financed by clothing merchant John Wanamaker. As the custom of Mother's Day spread, the emphasis shifted from the pacifism and reform movements to a general appreciation of mothers. The first official recognition of the holiday was by West Virginia in 1910. A proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day was signed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson on May 14, 1914. As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil At the summons of war, Let women now leave all that may be left of home For a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means Whereby the great human family can live in peace... Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar, But of God In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask That a general congress of women without limit of nationality, May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient And the earliest period consistent with its objects, To promote the alliance of the different nationalities, The amicable settlement of international questions, The great and general interests of peace.
