Prayers and Love go a long way in aiding recovery. Gerry can be reached at: (813) 962-7188 or e-mail at: rgdgmoore@verizon.net Dear Brothers in Christ, January Happy New Year. I wish everyone a very healthy and prosperous 2008. We just completed another successful year for our Council and I am looking to 2008 to be just as successful. We closed out 2007 by serving over 500 breakfast goers at our “Breakfast with Santa” event. I would like to express my appreciation to the 25 Brother Knights who participated along with a number of wives who volunteered and assisted in the face painting, and making crafts with the children. What makes it so rewarding is that we all had fun and St.Vincent DePaul will benefit as they will be the benefactors in the amount of $1100.00. The Advent Reconciliation Service again went smoothly. Thanks to the Knights who participated and making this such a smooth running function. During January we have our Basketball Free Throw Competition scheduled for January 27 at Northdale Recreation Center. We have been asked to participate in the Santo Nino Procession again later this month. Our three winners from the Council Spelling Bee won the District competition and will be participating in the Regional Competition later this month. Congratulations and let’s keep routing for them as they compete for the State Competition. Our next General Business Meeting is scheduled for January 17 at 7:30 p.m. Hope to see you all there. Vivat Jesus Your Grand Knight Bill Miller We have changed the calendar format: Page 7 sports a new calendar format. Fr. Len mentioned that we did not receive 2008 calendars this year. It seems that local funeral homes are reluctant to provide the calendars; cost savings was mentioned. So we are picking up the slack with a calendar page that includes Feast days and Holy days…. Insurance: Meet Sam Beauregard new to our council An introduction taken from one written by Michael A. Aun, General Agent. “I am pleased to introduce Sam Beauregard as your new Supreme Council Representative. Sam was born in Connecticut but has lived in Florida since the age of 5. He served in US Navy and was stationed in Southern Spain during the Franco dictatorship. He has a degree in Business from Hillsborough Community College, and a BS in Computer Technology from USF. The purpose of Everyday Blessings is to ensure stability and permanency not only in the lives of children whose biological parent(s) recognize their inability to care for them, but also for children who have been permanently removed from their families due to neglect and abuse children who otherwise would likely spend their childhood in the unstable, impermanent and frequently abusive foster care system. Everyday Blessings offers an alternative to abuse, neglect and lengthy stays in the foster care system. One woman who spent her childhood in the foster care system expressed that when she was a little girl being “thrown back and forth from one foster home to another,” she “always dreamed that someone could adopt me and I could have a real family. But my parents kept getting custody of me, and then sending me away again. It was a very strange childhood to say the least!” How can you help as an individual? Become a regular donor, matching gifts from your employer; including Everyday Blessings in your will- leave your insurance, property, stocks, etc. for the children. For more information: 813 982 9226 x 227 or www.everybless.org. P.S. A special Thank you to all the Knights and parishioners who made “Breakfast with Santa” such a huge success. As a result we will be donating approximately $1,100 to St. Vincent DePaul Society. Degrees will resume in January 08 in preparation for a 3d Degree which will be held in April 08 For those interested in advancing to their next Degree; please contact: Brother John Bennis: 920- 4558 Another Famous Knight of Columbus Did you know that Ronald Ames Guidry is a Brother Knight of Columbus? January Ronald Ames Guidry (nicknamed "Louisiana Lightning" and "Gator") (born August 28, 1950, in Lafayette, Louisiana) is a former Major League Baseball left- handed pitcher. He played 14 seasons for the New York Yankees from 1975 through 1988. Guidry was the pitching coach of the New York Yankees from 2006 to 2007. Guidry began his career pitching briefly in the 1975 and 1976 seasons. In 1977, he began as a relief pitcher but was moved into the starting rotation. He helped lead the New York Yankees to a World Series championship in 1977 and 1978. In those two years combined, Guidry went 4- 0 in the postseason with 3 complete games in 5 starts, allowing only nine earned runs in 37 1/3 innings pitched. In 1978, Guidry posted a career year, one of the best in the modern era. Against the California Angels on June 17, he struck out a Yankee- record 18 batters. Guidry's 18strikeout performance is usually cited as the launching pad of the Yankee Stadium tradition of fans standing and clapping for a strikeout with two strikes on the opposing batter. For the season, Guidry went 25- 3, in a season that is among the top 10 in baseball history. He led the league with a sparkling 1.74 ERA, 25 wins, a .893 winning percentage, 9 shutouts, 248 strikeouts, and 6.15 hits allowed per 9 innings pitched. He held batters to a .193 batting average, .249 on base percentage, and .279 slugging percentage. He was even tougher with 2 outs and runners in scoring position (.152/.221/.253), and in the 9th inning of games (.119/.200/.136). He claimed the American League Cy Young Award. Guidry also finished second in American League Most Valuable Player voting to Boston Red Sox slugger Jim Rice. Guidry's 25th win of the regular season was his most significant, as he was the winning pitcher in the Yankees' 5- 4 win over the Boston Red Sox in a one- game playoff at Fenway Park in Boston to decide the American League East division winner. The game is best known for Bucky Dent's seventh- inning, three- run home run off Mike Torrez (who, as a Yankee pitching mate of Guidry's just the year before, had been on the mound for the final out of the 1977 World Series) that gave the Yankees a 3- 2 lead. Earlier in the game, Guidry had given up a home run to Carl Yastrzemski— the only one hit by a left- hander off him all season. No American League pitcher posted an ERA as low again until Boston's Pedro Martinez in 2000. His magical 1978 year, when isolated, is arguably the most dominant year ever by a pitcher. Coincidentally, in all three of Guidry's losses in 1978, the winning pitcher on the opposing team threw left- handed and had the first name "Mike." He lost 6- 0 to the Milwaukee Brewers and left- hander Mike Caldwell on July 7, lost 2- 1 to the Baltimore Orioles and left- hander Mike Flanagan on August 4, and lost 8- 1 to the Toronto Blue Jays and left- hander Mike Willis on September 20. Over the next seven seasons, Guidry amassed a 113- 57 win- loss record. Guidry also won the Gold Glove Award five straight times (1982- 86). As well as winning the 1978 Cy Young Award, Guidry was named The Sporting News AL Pitcher and Major League Player of the Year. Guidry was named Lefthanded Pitcher on The Sporting News AL All- Star Teams in 1978, 1981, 1983 and 1985. Guidry also finished in the top 10 in the American League Cy Young voting six times (1977- 79, 1981, 1983 and 1985) over a nine- year span. “The Holy Father’s Intentions for January 2008 ” As a show of our solidarity with Pope Benedict XVI, we are printing his monthly prayer intentions: General: That the Church may strengthen her commitment to full visible unity in order to manifest ever more clearly her nature as a community of love in which is reflected the communion of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Mission: That the Church in Africa, preparing to celebrate the second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Africa, may continue to be a sign and channel of reconciliation and justice in a continent still suffering from war, exploitation and poverty. "Roe v. Wade Violates the American Way" "The State or a person can never justify the intentional killing of an innocent born or pre- born human in existence after fertilization. No exception! No compromise!" Heisman Trophy Winner Tim Tebow Could Have Been a Victim of Abortion New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow became the first sophomore in the history of the NCAA to win the coveted Heisman Trophy as the best football player in the nation. However, Tebow's accomplishments may never have been supported had his mother followed a doctor's recommendation to have an abortion. With 29 passing touchdowns and 22 rushing touchdowns, Tebow displayed the kind of versatility that has become more valued at the quarterback position. Pam Tebow and her husband were Christian missionaries in the Philippines in 1985 and they prayed for "Timmy" before she became pregnant. Unfortunately, as the Gainesville Sun reports, Pam entered into a coma after she contracted amoebic dysentery, an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite found in a contaminated food or drink. The treatment for the medical condition would require strong medications that doctors told Pam had caused irreversible damage to Tim -- so they advised her to have an abortion. As the Sun reported, Pam Tebow refused the abortion and cited her Christian faith as the reason for her hope that her son would be born without the devastating disabilities physicians predicted. Pam ultimately spent the last two months of her pregnancy in bed and, eventually, gave birth to a health baby boy in August 1987. As she told the newspaper, Pam was not surprised that her son would be up for the Heisman despite no underclassman receiving the award since its inception in 1933. "The combination of Timmy's God- given talent, hard work, character and leadership have made a mark on and off the football field," she said. As prominent researcher Joel Brind writes in a new LifeNews.com editorial, doctors are frequently telling women they should consider abortions when confronted with various medical situations affecting their health. Yet, as he notes, physicians can successfully treat both mother and child without suggesting that the baby be killed to spare a mother's life. Because Tim Tebow was spared, he's wowed a nation by his athletic skill and, at his younger age, has an opportunity to become the second person to win two Heisman awards. Make This Season a Blessing, Help a Child in Need Charity is the first principle of the Knights of Columbus and throughout its 125 year history the Order has worked to help those who are suffering and in need. Last year, Knights of Columbus donated more than $143 million and 68 million hours of volunteer time to charity. As part of its charitable initiatives, the Knights of Columbus introduced a “Help a Child in Need” Christmas campaign in 2006. Following on that successful effort, the Order worked with several individuals involved in the production of the hit movie Bella to create a television message to promote its 2007 campaign. Lead actor Eduardo Verástegui, producer Leo Severino (both Knights of Columbus) and Writer/director Alejandro Monteverde contributed to the making of the 60- second TV ad, which is being broadcast on the major networks in the run- up to Christmas. Alejandro Monteverde, left, and Eduardo Verástegui (seated) chat during a break in the filming of the 2007 Knights of Columbus “help a Child in Need” Christmas message. Monteverde was the writer/director of the hit movie Bella, in which Verástegui was the lead actor.
