Nothing beats fried rice (sinangag), a sunny side up egg (itlog) and your choice of meat or fish. Want tapa (beef) to go with your rice and egg? Presto! You have tapsilog, coined from the tapa, sinangag at itlog. There are endless possibilities too. There’s tocilog (tocino or sweetened cured beef), porksilog (porkchop), adsilog (adobo), longsilog (longanisa or sweet and spicy sausage) etc. Want something different? Have champorado or chocolate rice pudding. Think of it as chocolate flavored oatmeal. Rice not for you? Then there’s bread rolls or pandesal. Spread on some butter, cocojam, peanut butter then dip it in hot chocolate / cocoa (tsokolate) or coffee (kape). Under the Sea With such a long coastline, the Philippines is a haven for maritime cuisine. There are fishes like bangus (milkfish), galunggong (mackerel scad) and lapu-lapu (grouper). Roast them over coals (inihaw) and you’re on the road to a tummy fill. You can also cook them deepfried, sweet and sour (escabeche), stuffed (relleno), use them for sour soup (sinigang) and kinilaw (served raw, cooked only by steeping in vinegar). There are also other seafoods like tahong (mussels), hipon (shrimp), (tulya (clams), alimango (small crabs), alimasag (large crabs) and pusit (squid). Make Mine Meat Whether its pork, beef or chicken, Pinoy cuisine has a wide array of dishes. Fiesta fare wouldn’t be complete without the ever popular lechon (whole roasted pig and calf). Everyday eats are also tongue-pleasers. One popular dish is adobo, chicken and pork marinated in garlic, soy sauce and vinegar. Other recipes include kaldereta (rich goat stew), kare-kare (ox tail in peanut sauce), afritada (chicken simmered in tomatoes and bell peppers), tinola (chicken ginger soup) and a host of many others. Pinoy Eggs If you want egg-meals, you can have torta (meat or vegetable wrapped in egg). There’s also Itlog na Pula or Itlog na maalat. These are salt-cured and hard boiled eggs. But what is considered exotic by other countries would be the balut and penoy. These are boiled duck eggs, the difference is that the balut is collected 10 days before full development so inside is a duckling fetus while the penoy failed to develop at normal speed so there’s no fetus. Fear Factor used them to test contestants intestinal fortitude. Oodles of Noodles The Chinese gave Pinoys pancit (stir-fried noodles). Long noodles are eaten for long life! They’re either dry or with soup. There’s pancit guisado, bihon, canton, malabon, pancit palabok, etc. For those with soup, there’s sotanghon, mami, pancit molo and batchoy. Season to Taste Customize how Pinoy food tickles your taste buds. Use toyo (soy sauce), patis (fish sauce), bagoong (fermented shrimp paste) and siling labuyo (very hot peppers). Just Desserts Pinoy desserts have rice sweets like bibingka, palitaw, suman, puto and kutsinta. There’s also pichi-pichi (cassava) and leche flan (crème caramel). A lot of kids also grew up with eating taho (soft beancurd, molasses and sago / tapioca balls). But what everyone likes to cool down on a hot summer day with a tall glass of halohalo. Halo-halo is mix of crushed ice, beans, gulaman (gelatin), sago (tapioca balls), langka (jackfruit), coconut, ube and leche flan topped with evaporated milk and a scoop of your favorite ice cream. Hungry yet? Just remember that there’s a Pinoy dish for whatever you fancy. Eat to your heart’s content. Kain na! arap!” That’s what we say whenever our taste buds come into contact with something delicious. Pinoy food is delicious, no doubt about that. But what food exactly is Pinoy? What made all of it delectable? The Philippines lies 1,210 km (750 mi) away from mainland Asia. The whole country consists of about 7,107 islands with nearly 18,000 km of shoreline. The country also has over 100 distinct native ethnic groups. History has contributed much to the country via relations with different cultures. At different points in history, the Filipinos have come into contact with Spaniards, Americans, Chinese, Dutch, British, Portugese, Indians, Japanese and other neighbors. Such numerous aspects contributed to the diverse mix that is Filipino culture. These also greatly influenced Philippine Cuisine, making it one big culinary melting pot. Back to Basics For staple food, others have mashed potatoes, some have noodles. For Filipinos it is rice or kanin. To cook, rice is simply boiled. What you have will be a filling treat to complement whatever delicious viand you prepare. Eh di ba iyong mga Austrian, diyan magagaling iyan? Bratwurst. Shinken. Mortadella. Iyong mga steak doon, hindi katulad ng steak dito. Isolated kami. Mahirap. Kung tatawag ka ng Manila, dadaan pa ng Moscow. Mga 10 kilometers sa city, may mga payphone booth. Sulat, umaabot ng 15 days. Sabado kasi, half day na kami. Pag linggo, sarado. Pupunta sa club. May bayad pero minsan, nakakalibre. Pilipino ang waiter. Umupo ka lang sa bar, bibigyan ka ng bibigyan ng alak. Libre yon. Maraming klase ng beer. Mura. Mamimili ka. Walang pulutan. Bilyar lang. This rice can survive floods and typhoons. Crossbreeding of rice varieties received support from the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) as rice breeding can increase farmers’ production. Crossbreeding of rice is the process of mating two varieties to produce another kind. Successfully crossbred rice usually possesses the potency of the two varieties. Agrarian reform secretary Nasser Pangandaman said that with the new rice varieties, farmers are assured of higher income because these crossbreeding produces more gains. Compared to other varieties, the crossbreeds, can survive floods and typhoons. He also added that the three varieties of crossbred rice are well-suited in the province’s farmland. The farmers don’t have to buy their seeds anymore, instead they could produce their own seeds through crossbreeding. The first variety called Ferolin was named after former Municipal Agrarian Reform officer Leopoldo Ferolin who initiated the project. The second is H-Stone named after Heracleo Bato, the development facilitator in Nabunturan ARC. Ferolin rice is a crossbreed of male IR64 and female AG5. H-Stone meanwhile is a combination of the Hinumay rice and the female RC98. The ASD-13 is a crossbreed of IR 64 and Masipag 45. Duazo, an agrarian reform beneficiary from Nabunturan Cluster Agrarian Reform Community, was trained in rice technology from the Farmers-Scientist Training Program initiated by the DAR and the University of the Philippines-Los Baños. “We are happy that farmers are being trained to be more ingenious and inventive. At the moment, I am working on organic fertilizers and pesticides that would also benefit the farmers here,” Duazo said in her native dialect. With the entire training program, Secretary Pangandaman is optimistic that agrarian reform communities in the different provinces will produce more using advance rice production technology. “The DAR will continuously train farmers and promote new technologies as part of its support services program to help agrarian reform beneficiaries,” he added. In order to survive through law school and obtain that coveted law degree, it is not enough that one possess the required intellectual capability. On top of this, one must also have extreme diligence and determination. Lastly (but certainly not the least), law studies can also be very expensive. By way of an unsolicited advice, if you are absolutely sure that you will take up further studies in law, then I suggest you take up Philosophy (or any related course) in college. This enhances one’s ability to analyze ideas, as well as to think logically and with precision – tools that will prove very useful in the law school. On the other hand, if you are still having second thoughts about entering law school, then I suggest you take up a business course. This will provide you with adequate familiarity with commercial transactions (and even jargon) while, at the same time, still give you a lucrative fallback in the event that you decide not to take up law later on. Going now to your main question, the question of whether or not a Philippine law degree will be recognized abroad is generally a function of: (a) where (i.e., which particular school or university) such law degree was obtained; and (b) what particular country do we seek to recognize said law degree. From what I understand (based on experiences of some friends), a law degree earned from the top law schools here in the Philippines are recognized (i.e., accepted) in most parts of the United States. Perhaps this is because most of our laws and rules of procedure are similar to (in other words, copied from) those of the US (particularly New York, as regards commercial laws). This does not mean, however, that you, armed with your law diploma from one of our better law schools in the Philippines, will automatically be allowed to practice law in the US. It only means that you need not take up further studies in order to be qualified to take the bar exam. Just like in our country, however, an applicant for membership to the bar in the US must first hurdle the bar exams. Each state may administer a different bar exam from those of others, although there may be reciprocity agreements between and among some states (e.g., persons who pass the New York bar exam will likewise be allowed to practice law in New Jersey, notwithstanding that said person did not take the New Jersey bar exam, etc.). Unfortunately, I am not so sure with regard to other places in the world, as all of my friends who chose to practice law outside the Philippines did so in the US. Having said that, I would venture to guess, though, that we will have difficulty imposing recognition of our local law degrees, say, in the UK (which is primarily of common law jurisdiction) and, perhaps other places in Asia (e.g., China) and the Middle East, where they may have totally different sets of laws, based on totally different sets of cultural and societal values. For further information on whether or not a particular country will recognize our local law degrees, perhaps it may be best to contact the local consular offices of said country, if there are any. In fact, in one of its landmark decisions, the Supreme Court has explicitly ruled that the pursuit of a degree in law is not a every person’s right, but a privilege reserved only for a chosen few. Not everyone is entitled to take up law studies, much less hurdle the bar exams and sign the Roll of Attorneys. It is also a problem for the Philippine government since dollars lost due to leakages and high transaction costs mean less money for the domestic economy. We’ve put together some helpful hints regarding money remittance. 1. Never send cash or checks by regular mail. If you want a safer option to regular mail, go with registered mail or a courier service. These options, however, are very expensive. 2. Because of the high cost of registered mail and courier services, banks and remittance companies are usually the best option for sending money home. Remember, however, to only use reputable banks and remittance companies. 3. It is usually better to send money by electronic transfer. Sending checks can be an expensive and time-consuming process. Personal checks, for example, can be difficult to cash and sometimes take weeks to clear. In addition, fees are often subtracted from the amount you send. 4. When wiring money from bank to bank, the transaction is usually cheaper and faster if both sender and recipient have accounts with the same bank. You should be aware, however, that most banks require both sender and recipient to keep minimum or maintaining balances. 5. Banks do not have branches everywhere. Also, not all of them do door to door delivery. Because of this, specialized money transfer agents remain popular with OFWs especially those whose families live in areas which are not within the reach of traditional bank networks. 6. When using money transfer agents, always make sure the recipient knows that money has been sent. Find a safe and secure way to communicate with each other. This limits the possibility of fraud or money loss. 7. Use new technology to expand your options. Banks and remittance companies are now incorporating ATMs, credit cards, and even mobile phones into the remittance process. New technology can often speed up transactions while lowering costs. 8. Remember that banks and remittance companies make money two ways: first is via the transaction fee. Second, is via the spread they gain by converting US dollars (or any other foreign currency) into Philippine Pesos. Soreta, the Bicolano seafarer of 15 years, seeing despair in the Colombian men’s faces, did not give up and exhibited extraordinary courage in saving the life of his fellow men,” Secretary Romulo said. Mr. Soreta was a boatswain on the “M/T Inca” when he performed his exemplary act of valor. He hails from Bola, Camarines Sur and has been a seafarer for fifteen years. CDA Estavillo identified the fatalities as OFWs Ricardo “MG Rimas” M. Sangco, Sr. of Alfonso, Cavite; McArthur “MG Art” P . Ramirez of Sta. Rosa, Laguna and Joey de la Cuesta whose address is yet to be determined. They died in the fire that started at around 3:00 a.m. Their remains were only found at 3:00 in the afternoon, according to CDA Estavillo. Aside from the three fatalities, CDA Estavillo further reported that two other OFWs – Epifanio la Paz and Rodolfo Oxcineo – lived in the same residence building and survived the fire. CDA Estavillo stated that the five OFWs worked as laborers for the Busong Yongshik Co. located at Kumcheon Danji in Tangju City. Clemens believes that pitchers make excellent golfers since, by accident of their position, few pitchers have overly muscular upper bodies, fearing anything that constricts their flexibility. Pitchers also tend to be students of mechanics, strategy and self-control -all of which perfectly suits the fluid - rather than violent – swing required for golf. Moving On Despite his great performances, Clemens was not particularly liked by Red Sox management or the Boston media. When he was slowed down by injuries in 1993 and 1995, Red Sox management made it publicly known that their former golden boy had overstayed his welcome and would be let go. A distracted Clemens turned in a mediocre season in 1996, winning just 10 games. When Clemens signed a four-year, $40 million free agent deal with the Toronto Blue Jays before the start of the 1997 season, most observers figured that the once fearsome hurler had simply found a comfy place to spend his declining years. But the Rocket’s righteous anger toward his former employers brought back the fire of his youth. He led the league in wins (21), ERA or Earned Run Average (2.05) and strikeouts (292) in 1997. Clemens was the first pitcher in 50 years to win the pitcher’s Triple Crown. He did it again the next year when he won 20 games, striking out 271 batters with a league low ERA of 2.65. After winning back to back Cy Young Awards (for the second time in his career) in 1997 and 1998, The Rocket was a hot commodity once again. The winning bid for his services came from the powerful and deep pocketed New York Yankees. Roger welcomed the development since it would give him the chance to finally win a World Series title. Clemens headed to the Big Apple where he became the anchor of a Yankee staff that added two more World Series titles to the legendary franchise’s collection. In 2001, Clemens won his sixth Cy Young award. Coming Home Clemens announced his retirement after the 2003 season but was convinced to play one more season in Houston by best friend and former Yankee Andy Petite who was now with the Astros. Clemens, who grew up near Houston, relished the chance to finish his career near friends and family. He signed a one year US$5-million deal with the Astros and turned in an awesome performance in 2004 winning 23 games and his 7th Cy Young award. “He’s a superhero, man,” said Houston teammate Jeff Bagwell. “He’s the Rocket. You can’t tell me everyone on the field doesn’t know about him, doesn’t know who he is. The Legend of Rocket always grows.” Houston management wanted the Rocket to keep pitching. In 2005, they paid Clemens US$18-million – the biggest salary ever for a pitcher - in order to convince him to postpone retiring for another year. Clemens defied his birth certificate yet again this year by recording major league lows in ERA (1.87) and opponents’ batting average (.198). Twenty-one years later, he continues to make catchers’ mitts pop with pitches that leave batters scratching their heads in frustration. “I see him as the same pitcher,” said White Sox catcher A.J.
