Grateful Cepeda honored with statue on 9/6/08
Cepeda's statue was unveiled before Saturday night's game, and the 9-foot bronze sculpture on a 5-foot base shows "Cha Cha" standing upright with a first baseman's' mitt in one hand and a ball in the other. He's outfitted in a Giants uniform of the early '60s and flashing an inviting smile, as if to say, "Grab a glove. Let's throw." "When things like this happen to you, that's when I say to myself, 'Orlando, you're a very lucky person,' " Cepeda said after the unveiling. A ceremony was attended by dozens of Cepeda's family members and friends, other Giants greats of the past, including Barry Bonds, and hundreds of fans. One of his friends, Jose Feliciano, performed songs during the ceremony and, later, the national anthem, shortly before Cepeda threw out the ceremonial first. Cepeda was the fourth Giant to be honored with a statue, following Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal. There was sentiment during the ceremony that Bonds should be the fifth.

"I've got the perfect place for the next statue," Lon Simmons told the audience. "It should be out in McCovey Cove because that's where this fellow sent a lot of baseballs to die." Cepeda, who early in the week suggested Bonds should get a statue, said during the ceremony, "My hero, the best hitter, the best ballplayer ever to play the game, Barry Bonds." He said it in Mays' company. Statues are erected for retired players, said Larry Baer, the Giants' executive vice president. Bonds isn't retired, but he probably will be by the time the Giants decide to erect another statue. Baer pointed out it happens about every three years. What about Gaylord Perry? Like Cepeda, Perry went into the Hall of Fame as a Giant. And like Cepeda, who earned his biggest accolades elsewhere (an MVP award with St. Louis), Perry won Cy Young Awards with the Indians and Padres. "I'm keeping my fingers crossed," said Perry when asked about a possible statue of his own. "Maybe," said Baer, not ruling out such an honor for Perry. During the ceremony, young Darren Baker read a congratulatory note from his father, Dusty, the Reds' manager and Cepeda's close friend and former teammate. Ali Cepeda, 30, thanked his father for some early life lessons, including the importance of learning English. The statue was sculpted by William Behrends, who sculpted the Giants' three other statues. **Article written by John Shea for the SF Chronicle. All rights reserved**
