Canine Listener Robin Dickson, Pres./CEO Fed. Tax ID #93-0681311 Many of you knew and loved Hazel. A brindle Staffordshire Terrier mix, Hazel was our official greeter and demonstration dog for many years. After training, Hazel lived with her trainer and came to work every day to greet visitors and help with tours. Visitors to DFD loved Hazel’s happy greetings and the way she made everyone feel so welcome. In addition, Hazel traveled the country with Robin Dickson and performed flawless demonstrations of how the Hearing Dogs are trained. She loved people and crowds and loved to show off her skills. People always said, “Hi” to Hazel first and then talked to Robin. Hazel even had her own column for a few years in the Canine Listener where she answered questions and dispensed canine wisdom and advice. When Hazel retired, she continued living with her trainer who eventually moved to California. Hazel became a “beach girl” and enjoyed retirement to the fullest. After being diagnosed a couple of years ago with cancer, her body finally gave out and she had to be put to rest last month. All of us who knew Hazel and loved her will miss her greatly. She was a special, special friend and a wonderful goodwill ambassador for DFD. He wanted a companion to motivate him to walk and exercise more and to help alleviate his anxiety attacks. He goes to the Veterans Domiciliary often for classes and training to improve his life. He needed a companion, motivation to exercise, and awareness of his surroundings. Faith was the right match for Rick. A small, female Rat Terrier, Faith originally was placed as a Hearing Dog. When her partner became too ill to care for her any more, she came back to DFD, and we refreshed her training and began looking for the right place for her. Rick is now enjoying the benefits of his very special four-legged helper, and Faith is loving her life. They go for walks every day. Faith goes to “The Dom” with Rick for his classes, and they are helping each other greatly. LITTLe mAC wITH A bIg personALITy Fran M., a retired school teacher, suffered a stroke in 1999. She has recovered well but still has some residual effects from the stroke. Living alone, she needed some companionship and fun in her life. She also needed motivation to walk and generally become more physically and mentally active. Fran applied for one of our Miracle Mutts (Special Dogs for Special People) and after screening was matched with Mac. Mac is a tiny, Yorkie mix that we found at the Klamath Falls Animal Shelter. Mac is energetic and happy, and his goal in life is wanting to please his person. Mac and Fran have only been together a short time, but Fran says he has made a wonderful difference in her life. They enjoy about 1½ hours of walking every day, and Fran says she feels so much better, both physically and mentally. They even went hiking recently. Fran says, rain or shine, whether she feel like it or not, they walk, and that has made the difference in how she feels. Also, Mac has brought joy and fun into Fran’s life with his funny antics and happy personality. KeeTer, THe rIgHT mATCH Keeter, a two-year-old, grey Pomeranian mix, came to us from Paws Across The Northwest after his owner died. He was everything we look for in a dog—friendly, intelligent, and energetic. After working with Keeter and getting him ready for placement, his trainer determined that the best match for Keeter was Carolyn S. Carolyn is 72, a widow, and had recently lost her dog. She realized that she needed some help and companionship beyond the caregivers who come in for a couple of hours a day to help her. This was the right match. Keeter and Carolyn are now helping each other and having a great time together. Carolyn’s life is richer and happier, and Keeter again has someone to love and someone to care for him. Canine Listener • Spring 2008 • Page 3 continued . . . JIm gIves THe gIFT oF InDepenDenCe Diana G. is a massage therapist in West Virginia. She began losing her hearing in high school, and it has become progressively worse. When she realized that she was no longer hearing the door bell and alarm clock reliably, she realized that she needed assistance. She also worried that she might not hear the smoke alarm. After applying for a Hearing Dog and being carefully screened, Diana was approved and went on our waiting list. When the dog that matched Diana’s needs and lifestyle had completed training, the placement was set up. Jim, a small brown and black Chihuahua cross, was the right dog for Diana. Jim came from a shelter in Harker Heights, Texas. He was energetic, loved people, and enjoyed learning to be a Hearing Dog. After the trip to West Virginia with his trainer, he was ready to meet his new “Mom.” After getting to know each other a little bit, it was time to get to work, and Jim’s trainer started teaching Diana how to respond when Jim alerted her to sounds. They practiced a few times, and Diana became very excited. Now people could actually use the front door and either knock or ring the bell and Jim would alert her. She wouldn’t miss visitors! As they practiced more and more sounds, Diana realized how much more independent she was going to be with Jim by her side. bICHon – From negLeCT To Love Bichon, a one-year-old, small, white Bichon, had been severely neglected by his previous owners. When we found him at Paws Across the Northwest, his coat was horribly matted, and he had several sores on his little body. His feet and pads were red and sore. The first thing that we did was take care of his medical needs and then get him cleaned up and clipped. With further work and evaluation, it became apparent that Bichon did not have the confidence needed to be a Hearing Dog, but he had all the potential to be a Miracle Mutt (Special Dogs for Special People). When he was ready, we found the right match for Bichon with Eleanor M. in Washington. Eleanor has had several health problems that left her disabled. She uses a wheelchair and spends a lot of time in a chair. Eleanor’s husband Vernon takes very good care of her, but she really needed and wanted something to make her days brighter and someone for company while Vernon is at work. Bichon is everything Eleanor and Vernon hoped for. He keeps Eleanor company during the day and brightens her day with his funny little antics. He even makes funny little noises as if he is carrying on a conversation. There are days when Eleanor is in a lot of pain, and Bichon’s love and presence are a real blessing and help. This little Miracle Mutt not only has a far better life himself, but he is truly making miracles happen for Eleanor and Vernon. Charity Navigator (www.CharityNavigator.org) salutes your charitable efforts. Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that your organization excels, as compared to other charities in America, in successfully managing the finances of your organization in an efficient and effective manner. This consistency in your rating is an exceptional feat, especially given the economic challenges many charities have had to face in the last year. Once again, congratulations on your 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. Thom Somes, known as “The Pet Safety Guy TM ,” and his company DoggieDoggieAreYouOK.com Productions have launched a year-long campaign called The Million Petizen Rally to promote his new book, Knowing Your Pet’s Health: A Guide For Optimal Wellness From Snout-To-Tail. The goal of the Million Petizen Rally is to raise $1,000,000.00 – to be divided among four animal charities, including DFD. Somes said the company chose DFD because, “I wanted to bring recognition and money to pet charities that truly make a difference on a daily basis. Sally D. - California (EFT) – An Easy Way to Give You can eliminate processing/handling costs, need for checks, and postage costs by setting up an Electronic Funds Transfer option for making donations to DFD. You are in total control of the amount of your donation and can stop the donations whenever you desire. This paperless process, using secure software, allows donors to make a monthly donation to DFD automatically, for as long as they wish. You can either contact your bank and initiate the process through them, or you can contact Ted at Dogs for the Deaf, Inc. 10175 Wheeler Road, Central Point, OR 97502 (or ted@dogsforthedeaf.org) and ask for the EFT form. We will send you the form to fill out and return to us. We then take the form to our bank, and they will set up the arrangement with your bank. You determine the day of the month that the donation is transferred and the amount, and donations continue automatically until you cancel the process. This makes regular, monthly donations easy and safe. It is an excellent way to show your support of the work of DFD. Watch for DFD in Print and on TV DFD does not pay for any advertising, but we do have print and video public service ads that are run in various publications and on various television stations around the country. We prepare these ads and send them out once a year, hoping that some of the magazines and TV stations will need to fill a spot or will be interested in our mission and want to help by running our ad. If you see one of our ads, either on TV or in a magazine, we would appreciate it if you would let us know. Either clip the print ad and send it to us, making sure we know what publication it was in and the date, if possible, or let us know the city, channel, and approximate time you saw the ad on TV. This will help us greatly and enable us to thank them so that hopefully they will run our ads more often. Are you getting married soon or know someone who is? Here are a couple of ways you can help Dogs for the Deaf with a wedding celebration. The trend of “charitable weddings” is on the rise. Many couples getting married today are finding creative ways to make a difference on their special day. This social commitment is a way to make their wedding day more meaningful. Recently, DFD was the beneficiary of Kristen and Timothy’s wedding in Pennsylvania. They asked their guests in lieu of a wedding gift to make a donation to Dogs for the Deaf. Another couple made a generous donation to DFD in lieu of buying favors for their wedding guests. When couples get married, many of them already have primary household items and don’t need another toaster, bowl, or linens. Some will sign up with a gift registry for the items they do need and then give their guests the choice of making a donation or purchasing a gift. If you or someone you know would like to make DFD the direct beneficiary of their wedding, just call us to make the arrangements or have the donations mailed to DFD and we will send you a list of all donations so you can thank them personally. Another option….Introducing the “I Do Foundation.” The “I Do” Foundation is the nation’s first weddingfocused nonprofit foundation. The couple can save money on wedding items AND support Dogs for the Deaf by registering with the I Do Foundation. They offer savings for honeymoon packages, discounted invitations, rings, wedding gifts, personal web sites, and even charitable wedding favors. The I Do Foundation allows couples and their guests to make wedding-related purchases that generate donations for their favorite charity. To date, the I Do Foundation has donated more than $2 million to charities on behalf of couples. Over 200,000 couples a year register with the I Do Foundation. At the I Do Foundation’s Charity Registry guests can also make donations to the couple’s selected charity in lieu of gifts. All of these wedding services are available free of cost. Just visit www.IDoFoundation.org. Check it out today, and be sure to select Dogs for the Deaf, Inc. as the beneficiary of your charitable wedding. Do you have a group that you would like to talk to about DFD? Would you like to learn more about the most current happenings at DFD? Do you have a friend you would like to share the DFD story with? As part of the CHANGE team, I get to pick two charities per year to donate a portion of our profits to. I picked Dogs for the Deaf because you are not only helping dogs in need but people, too. You are also showing others just how helpful and meaningful dogs can be. Keep up the good work Megan K. - Rhode Island Dear DFD, On December 2, 2007, Omega Tau Sigma, the veterinary fraternity at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, held its first philanthropy dog show to raise money for dog related causes. Our chapter voted to donate to your organization because you clearly put a lot of time and effort into rescuing dogs and training them for people whose disabilities are often overlooked. I’m sure these dogs help people in unimaginable ways, and we are glad to help you accomplish your goals. This was the first time we held a dog show. We had participants ranging from Chihuahuas to Greyhounds to Bernese Mountain Dogs to Bedlington Terriers. Their handlers included veterinary students and employees of the college. We had four faculty members as the judges as well as a boisterous audience. Dogs were judged on behavior on leash, enthusiasm and grooming effort. Other competitions included best trick, most obedient, and best costume. Please accept this donation from the members of Omega Tau Sigma and know that we admire you for your commitment. Michelle J. – New York Dear Friends, Here is another daffodil donation for the Field of Memories on behalf of our beloved Buffy. Our hearts are happy only in that our gift to her was letting her go. Thank goodness we have our new pup, Cody. He has some big paws to fill. Chris and Bill P. Oregon Dear Robin, The Valley Vagabonds Go od Sams chapter has reached the end of its 35 years. I guess, if you want to be honest, we got old! The question was, “what do we do with our little bank account?” We decid ed that DFD was something we had supporte d for years and we would like part of it to go to you. It is small, but our hearts go with it. We have many personal, happy memories of our times with you, Robin. Your dedicati on and caring has touched lives and hearts da ily. Our love, Polly and George M. - Ca lifornia Dear DFD, Please enjoy the $100 donation enclosed. I have had a wonderful six years with my Hearing Dog Hobbitt. He does a great job on alerting me to sounds. My daughter is now 17 months old and soon will be able to call my name and Hobbitt will alert me. She just adores Hobbitt, too. Thanks again for providing me with a wonderful set of furry ears! Christen S. - Tennessee Dear DFD, A note of thanks for the tour of DFD. Folks were simply buzzing about your program. Here is a small token of our appreciation. Peter - Rogue Valley Manor Tour Host - Oregon Dear Friends, Please find enclosed our check in memory of our departed member Norman Bush. His efforts on behalf of DFD will be greatly missed. Norman and his wife Maurice have spent many hours collecting aluminum cans to recycle and donate the proceeds for the benefit of DFD. Their efforts have raised hundreds of dollars. They would visit bars and ask that the cans be saved. They also walked the streets and roads picking up discarded cans. It is our hope that our members can double our efforts to replace them. Bonnie B. - Tsunami Sams - California Dear DFD, Enclosed is a check from the sale of aluminum cans collected through our United Methodist Church. My husband and I are having to retire from the job, but a wonderful family is taking over. We will still be involved and always care. Thank you always for your work in helping others. Bernice and Willard T. - Idaho Hi Robin, We are disbanding our Phoenix Lions Club and are disbursing our funds. Naturally, I immediately thought of DFD so am enclosing a check for $100. Remember, if I can ever do anything to help, please call me. Flossie and I are doing well. She is a great help to me, and I thank you for her. Shirley B. - Oregon Page 14 • Canine Listener • Spring 2008 You can save money by shopping online AND Help DFD raise money… Dogs rescued by DFD help people with hearing loss and other challenges in so many ways. These government employees decide which charity/charities they want their donations to go to, and then the donations are done through payroll deduction. For the year 2006, CFC donations totalled over $134,900.00. CFC members have generously supported the work of DFD, and we greatly appreciate their willingness to help. We are listed in the “Animal Charities of America” section, #10969. Thank You, CFC DFD Again Receives 4-STAR Rating from Charity Navigator We are proud to announce that DfD has again received a 4-Star rating from charity navigator for our commitment to prudent fiscal management. this rating means that DfD outperformed most other charities in america in our efforts to efficiently manage our finances. the 4-Star rating identifies DfD as an organization that meets and exceeds the high expectations of the funding community.  Tour Dogs for the Deaf We would love to have you visit our facility in Central Point, Oregon. Canine Listener • Spring 2008 • Page 15 Notes from Robin It is finally spring in southern Oregon, and our Field of Memories has been absolutely beautiful. The bright yellow daffodils and the red tulips are visible from a long way away and can’t help but make you smile. Visitors are moved when they look at the names on the stones in amongst the flowers. As I promised in my column in the last issue, I want to give you an update on our expansion project. Those of you who have visited our facility in the past few years know how crowded we are. Our facility was built in 1988-1989, and we have not made any additions to it since then. At the time, we planned for growth, and the buildings have served us well for 20 years. However, we have grown and with additional staff and all the technology that is now required to operate a business efficiently, we are very cramped in every area of the facility. For example, a room in the kennel building that originally was used to store dog food is now housing four kennel techs with their desks, computers, and other equipment needed for their jobs. In order to alleviate kennel stress on the dogs while they are in training, we have modified and enhanced the kennels. With increased numbers of applications for our specially trained dogs, we need to add more kennels and more training space. Two years ago, we started working on plans for expansion of our facility. The first step was to obtain permission from the IRS for the expansion. I am very happy to report that we recently received that permission. It took a long time, but the decision was positive. Now we are working on the next step—getting permission from the county for the expansion. All of the “permit” portions of this type of process always move much more slowly than we would like, and there are always “speed bumps” along the way that take extra time and work. This is frustrating but unavoidable, and I know it will be well worth it in the long run. Once all the county work and approvals are well on their way to completion, then we will be ready to proceed with the capital campaign to raise the funds for construction. In the meantime, be assured that we are continuing to train and place the absolute, very best Hearing Dogs and Miracle Mutts possible. With more room, we will be able to help even more dogs and more people receive the incredible love, freedom, and independence that you have read about in the rest of this newsletter. Each and every one of you is an important and necessary part of this work—its growth and improvement. We could not do what we are doing or dream and plan for the future without your commitment to helping in so many ways. Pres./CEO Special Memorials family designated DFD as one of the charities that memorials should be sent to in Vincent’s name. In talking with family members, we found an interesting story. In 1957, Vincent opened a Cheese Steak and Pizza restaurant in Pennsylvania, and this family business is still going strong. Over the years, Vincent had a number of regular customers who had hearing loss so he decided to learn sign language. These customers greatly appreciated his interest in learning to communicate with them. Vincent’s grandson told us that his grandfather always had compassion for people with special challenges and that he was an avid animal lover. As Vincent aged, he lost a lot of his hearing. So, with Vincent’s passing, the family wanted to find a charity that was connected with hearing loss and animals and one that had an excellent rating for efficient use of donations. After finding DFD on Charity Navigator, the family designated DFD as the place to send memorials to honor Vincent. Thank you for enabling Vincent’s legacy of compassion to live on through the work of DFD. Vincent M. Cocca recently passed away, and his an animal lover. Tragedy struck when Regan was murdered in her home by an intruder. Family members say that Regan was a caregiver to many stray animals lucky enough to cross her path. With Regan’s untimely passing, her family wanted memorials to create a legacy to Regan’s love of animals and also have a connection to hearing loss. They found DFD on Charity Navigator and indicated that memorials for Regan should be sent to DFD. The response has been incredibly generous. In a phone conversation with Regan’s mother, she indicated that after they found out about DFD they realized that if Regan had had a Hearing Dog she might still be alive today. Hopefully knowing that the memorial donations are going to help other people receive the help of Hearing Dogs will help ease the pain of this especially tragic loss. Regan Bailey, 26, was hearing impaired and Page 16 • Canine Listener • Spring 2008 memorial Tributes in memory of . . . Money designated to the Endowment Fund is invested wisely, according to carefully developed guidelines. The principal remains in the Endowment Fund, and the interest earned is used for the general operating expenses of the organization. Our Finance Committee has established the goal over the next few years for the Endowment Fund to grow to the level where the interest from the investments will cover the necessary administrative and fund raising costs for DFD annually. In order to achieve this goal, we need your support. In addition to your normal, generous donations to the work of DFD, we hope you will be able to send in a special donation to the Endowment Fund. You will be enhancing the stability of DFD, and you will know that your donations will help people and dogs for many years to come.
