OREGON’S AFFILIATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS MADD Welcomes Faces... Two New We are pleased to announce that we have two new Affiliate Executive Directors in Oregon, Lois Harvick in Eugene and Mary Stewart in Portland. Lois began her position on July 1 this year as a promotion from her part-time position with MADD Lane County. Mary Stewart began working on October 19 in the Portland office in Gladstone. Lois Harvick has worked with MADD in Lane County for several years. In addition, she provided administrative support to the Lane County DUII Victim Impact Panel Inc. there. She has been instrumental in planning and implementing a variety of MADD programs in her area. Lois will provide support to Community Action Sites that reside in counties in the southern half of the state. Lois has attended Lois Harvick (left) and Mary Stewart (right) the “Fundraising Institute” at the National Office and has already achieved a measure of success in her effort to meet funding goals for this fiscal year. Lois has also begun to recruit new volunteers, has expanded MADD programming in Lane County schools and has initiated new ventures that incorporate fundraising, constituency building as well as spreading MADD’s mission. Mary Stewart is a long-time Portland resident and she brings management experience to her position with MADD. She has a great track record of building organizations to achieve greater effectiveness. Mary will provide support to the Community Action sites located in the northern tier of the state. In addition, she and Lois will alternate attendance at a variety of constituency building meetings typically held in Salem. We are delighted to have both women working on behalf of MADD in Oregon. Their strengths and efforts will no doubt be instrumental in ensuring the success of MADD Pacific Northwest Region. VOLUNTEERS HONORING BILL RICE By MADD Eugene Affiliate Bill Rice, MADD’s “Volunteer Extraordinaire”, was feted by Eugene area volunteers and past board members at the McKenzie River home of Bruce and Anne Pratt. In spring 2006, Bill was also publicly honored at an annual MADD Essay Contest award ceremony where he was presented with a commemorative plaque. Bill retired from MADD after a 19-year commitment as a top officer, first as a board member, then moving up to serve as vice-president and president. His fervent desire to open the eyes and ears of Oregon drivers and young people drew this quiet man into public speaking at both news conferences and MADD events. He also teamed with, well-known speaker, Donny Durrant, Page 2 ...Continued on page 4 VICTIM ADVOCACY Some things to keep in mind as a MADD volunteer victim advocate: Melissa Baker, Victim Advocate A MADD victim advocate is one who offers emotional support, guidance through the justice system, and referrals for other needs related to the crash. We can speak “for” victims as requested, but should always encourage them to attempt tasks they are capable of achieving on their own, this helps to empower them. Here are some important points to keep in mind: • • • • A MADD victim advocate is not a social worker, counselor or therapist. We provide information, guidance and support. We are not rescuers. We can never guarantee court accompaniment. We can only tell them that we will be there for them if at all possible. Our goal is to work with law enforcement and the prosecutor’s office. We are never to tell a victim that the system is flawed and that justice is never served. This only further victimizes the victim and causes conflict between MADD and important agencies that we need and want to work with. If you are a volunteer and have not had the VATI training, you are not allowed to work with victims. If you haven’t had the training in more than 4 years, you are required to take continued education training. The national office is offering several scholarships for volunteers in Dallas, TX this spring and summer. Finally, please keep in mind that we are the lead office for Washington and Oregon and information should flow though this office, so we can provide assistance and be a resource to all in the field. When in doubt, please call— (425) 251-5252, we are always available for a quick question. Also, feel free to cc: us on your MADD related email correspondence to easily keep us in the loop at victims@maddpnw.org. Thanks for all your hard work! • • Hello! My name is Johanna Trainer and I am thrilled to be the newest addition to the Victim Advocate team at MADD Pacific Northwest. I come from France, where I have an educational background in political science and international relations. I have been in the USA for a year and a half and have worked in the social services field, providing counseling to neglected and abused youth as well as being an advocate for sexual assault victims. Until we find a definite solution to prevent drunk driving, I will be here to help the victims of this crime recover every step of the way. Page 3 ...Continued from page 2 to speak in schools all over Oregon. He encouraged the creation of a DUII Victim Impact Panel and spoke to DUII offenders for twelve years. At the same time, as Lane County Board President, he guided the office and projects. What motivated him was to keep the memory of a twin son killed by a young drunk driver in Eugene. Food donated by Albertson’s was enjoyed as speeches of gratitude and appreciation by fellow volunteers and friends were shared with kind words, hugs and through tears. He deserves all the honors bestowed upon him. He will be missed. Bill and Carole Rice EDUCATION AND OUTREACH MADD School Assembly Show Hits Oregon If you haven’t already heard, the MADD School Outreach Program is totally awesome! Oregon and Lane County area schools specifically, got the opportunity to be included in the premier showing in Oregon of the MADD School Assembly Multimedia touring show and conclude that it totally rocked! Twenty-one year old, Trey Brown from MADD National in Texas, travels the United States, coming home only for Thanksgiving and Christmas, to bring this show to teens, teachers and school administrators. MADD Eugene Affiliate Office Breaks Ground on Memorial Garden in Remembrance to Victims Lost to Drunk Drivers Garden provides victim families and the public an opportunity to honor and remember loved ones Eugene, Oregon (March 17, 2007) Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was chartered in Lane County on March 3, 1983. Since then MADD has met and helped parents, children, friends and sibling survivors of drunk driving crashes. MADD’s Victim Services has supported victims of drunk driving crashes and listened to tragic stories and outpourings of grief. Many expressed a desire to have a peaceful spot set aside to honor those who have died as a result of a drunk driving crash. Barb Stoeffler, founder of the local Eugene MADD Affiliate began the search for the perfect place in November of 2005 and discovered the Hays Memorial Tree Garden, at the edge of Alton Baker Park. It is located immediately north of the Cuthbert Amphitheater and is a showcase for a wide variety of trees that grow in the Southern Willamette Valley. The dedicated spot within the tree garden is extremely Continued on page 5… Trey opens show with a thoughtful introduction to students of Triangle Lake Schools Page 4 …...Continued from page 4 impressive with several wide, winding gravel paths, lined on either side with (Cont...cement curbs. It sits on a soft rolling hilly area near the millstream. This special park allows visitors a tranquil respite and provides a unique opportunity to honor a loved one. A rock wall with victim names engraved in granite is planned. MADD supporters, volunteers, and victims have donated time, efforts and financial contributions; along with an agreement with the Eugene Parks & Open Spaces that manages the area, the garden became a reality. Corporate, in-kind donor sponsors include United Pipe & Supply, Shibumi Trading, Ltd., Bloomer's Nursery, Inc. Pleasant Hill Nursery and Eugene Wholesale Nursery. Delta Rotary of Eugene made a generous donation that will allow the garden to be maintained for many years to come in addition to volunteer help in the actual labor, developing the site. This Memorial Garden is about remembering those loved and lost. As an organization with more than 1500 trained victim advocates, MADD needs the public to help stop the devastation of drunk driving and to help families heal. MADD will continue to provide free victim services until there are no more drunk driving victims who need support. Families who have lost a loved one to drunk driving and wish his/her name engraved on the Memorial Garden Wall are urged to contact the local MADD office. “The best way to honor victims of drunk driving is to prevent it from happening to anyone else”, stated Jim Torrey, Co-Chair of the MADD Eugene Affiliate Operations Council. To help MADD continue its life saving work and increase efforts in education, victim services, public policy and support of law enforcement please contact your local MADD office at (541) 343-8115. We’ve been planting seedlings and saplings galore for the last two years and every day we are seeing the fruits of our labors. As a staff, along with our steadfast and loyal volunteers, we have planted MADD services, programs and advocacy efforts in a variety of places around the lovely states of Oregon and Washington. These efforts have paid off handsomely in the areas of partnerships, community outreach, funding opportunities, media relationships, legislative successes and most importantly, in numbers of victims we serve. We have new volunteers in our Regional Office; great relationships with the Attorney General and King County Prosecutor offices; an active 16-member Public Affairs Committee; close ties with KOMO TV; Speaker’s Bureau training with Tony Ventrella; shipboard training on the USS Abraham Lincoln; new Community Action Sites in Spokane & Yakima; affiliate ED’s in Eugene and Portland; Mr. Chuck Hurley as the keynote speaker and well-known TV reporter Keith Eldridge as emcee for our MADD Matters event on April 17th. MADD Pacific Northwest Region is on the rise and we look forward to working with all of you in the coming years as we make our garden grow. -J.G.E. MADD’s mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. As a nonprofit grassroots organization, MADD relies on individual contributions, corporate sponsorships and government grants for funding. Support of the organization includes both monetary and in-kind donations from volunteers, corporations, foundations, federal and state government and individuals who believe in and support MADD’s mission. The money is used to help achieve MADD’s mission. 73% of MADD’s funds are spent on community programs and services. The over 400 MADD affiliates depend on this funding for education and awareness programs. Other expenses include management and operating costs (9%) as well as cost associated with fundraising (18%). All money raised in the Northwest, stays in the NW. Donate online or you can mail your check or money order to our office locations listed above. Thank you for helping to keep our streets and communities safe. Page 6
