Obituary for Christopher Hook, inovator of the fully submerged foil hydrofoil and
Life Honorary Member of IHS who died on 9 February (1978) aged 75 while on
the way to lecture in the Midlands. He had been working on the HYDROFIN

Sea Transportation to Far East Hydrofoils. -
Leo Dromgoole, North Shore Bus operator and ferry owner is hoping to interest
Railways Department in buying three Jetfoils for the Wellington to Lyttleton run. -
The industrial dispute over Auckland's new 62 seat hovermarine hovercraft is
likely to cost $70,000 in lost revenue. Craft was intended for a fast ferry service
between Auckland and Waiheke Island in New Zealand to be operated by
Hydrofoil Services Ltd. -
Hydrofoil FLYING ALBATROSS of the Hong Kong and Macau Hydrofoil Co. Ltd
found primarily responsible for the collision with ferry MAN TACK in 1977 due
to excessive speed in poor visability and lack of vigilance. One passenger on

been undermined by the Government following the decision to place a 10
millino Pound order for a Boeing Jetfoil fot the Royal Navy. -
Grumman Corporation has invited Vosper Thorneycroft to build at least 50% of
its Flagstaff hydrofoils. These have been in production since 1968 and are in
service with the US Coastguard (indexers note: only one craft was built!). -

SEAJET operated by Jetlink Ferries will operate a three times a day service
from Brighton to Dieppe. -
HM2 Mk4 for Uruguay will operate a high-speed service from Colonia, Uruguay
to Buenos Aires, Argentina across the River Plate. The service by BELT SA will

Seajet were offered FLYING PRINCESS of the ex Thames to Zeebrugge route
as a stand-by vessel for the Brighton to Dieppe route. She (Jetfoil?) will return
to P&O when they start the Thames to Ostend route on 29 February 1980. -
With the October issue of the Journal Hovering Craft and Hydrofoil, the Journal
will be re-named High-Speed Surface Craft. -

Jetfoil HMS SPEEDY was due to leave for UK on 24 October 1979. She will be
completed in the UK. She is due for delivery to RN in April 1980 for evaluation
in various patrol roles. -
Catamaran Cruisers has been operating Volga 275 hydrofoil on the River
Thames and two further craft were bought due to interest shown. The craft were
found to be strongly built as evidenced by a collision with a floating railway
sleeper. -
Red Funnel Steamers have provided hydrofoil services on the Southampton to
West Cowes route for over a decade. The RHS 70 is the type currently in use
and considered an ideal size for the route. -
The PHM PEGASUS has established a new elapsed time record for a ship
transitting the Panama Canal in two hours and forty minutes. The hydrofoil has
since suffered a frounding accident while avoiding a fishing vessel in a channel. -
The AIAA / SNAME Advanced Marine Vehicles Conference at Baltimore was
well attended during 2-4 October 1979. The IHS has a booth at the conference. -
An IHS North Americal Chapter dinner was held at the AIAA / SNAME
Advanced Marine Vehicles Conference hotel at Baltimore. It was attended by
over 50 people including the IHS President, Dott Ing Leopoldo Rodriquez. -

Hydrofoil Cruises President Joel Rahn advises four round trips will be operated.
The three PT150 craft were originally in Scandinavia and later in
Florida/Bahamas. -
The SNAME Undergraduate Paper Award for 1979 was given for: Venezani,
Bruce and Kelly, Richard; Subcavitating Hydrofoil Lift and Drag Prediction. This
was delivered to the Chesapeake Section of SNAME. -

US Navy has only three MSO's (Oceangoing Minesweepers?) and therefore
rely on IWO JIMA and helicopters towing Mark 105 hydrofoil sleds to clear
minefields. -
It was believed that the sailing hydrofoil supported trimaran KAWASAKI
designed by Derek Kelsall was capsized due to instability on the foils when
struck by a squall. The three crew clung to the 4 ton craft until rescued and
were taken to Norfolk, VA. -
Investigations by Polish shipping industry reveal attributes of catamarans which
has lead Gdansk Shipping Co to place an order for five catamarans with the
Wisla shipyard. The first, SZMARAGD, was launched in January 1980. -

approx US$27.5 million incl spares, training etc. They will operate between
Dover and Ostend by 1981. -
Soviet Union is understood to have tested a new hydrofoil in the Baltic.
Reported to have a speed in excess of 100 km/h (54 knots) and fitted with four
SSM launchers and heavy guns. -

Harry Trevisany. They are working on improving existing hydrofoils &
developing catamaran type hydrofoils. -
A 100 ton hydrofoil with single Allison 501 KF Gas Turbine driven CP propeller
drive. Has a 45 knot foilborne speed and 10-12 knot hullborne speed. Payload
and fuel is 34 tons. -
17 Jetfoil hydrofoils currently operating with a further jetfoil to be introduced in
Summer of 1981 between Dover and Ostend. -
Royal Hydrofoil Cruises have names their three PT150's: QUEEN OF
TORONTO, PRINCESS OF THE LAKES, and PRINCE OF NIAGARA. These
craft are the worlds largest hydrofoils. The route is Toronto to Yorktown (for
Niagara). -
Extracts from a reply by David Keiper following a request for details concerning
his hydrofoil trimaran WILLIWAW by Richard Boehmer. Notes the speed
penalty of the foils below about 8 knots but that even so they improved ride
quality and controlability. -
The Picchiotti yard with a history dating back to 1854 built one of the first
hydrofoil boats in the world in 1906. Can any member give further details? -
Eric Tabarly in PAUL RICHARD broke the record set in 1905 for the fastest
Atlantic crossing (by sail?). He took 10 days 5 hours, 13 minutes and 50
seconds beating the record by nearly two days. PAUL RICARD is a 52ft foil-
assisted trimaran. -
Hydrofoil principle will be limited to passenger ships with a displacement of not
more than 1000 tons as larger hydrofoils are uneconomical and technically
complex. Other features of hydrofoils and hovercraft are also commented upon. -
Notes on the introduction of HMS SPEEDY to Royal Navy service. -
IHS stand attracted many visitors. Civil hydrofoil routes were marked on a world
map at the stand with visitors asked to add more known routes. Volunteer now

ICARUS of Alan Grogono (GB) holds the B Class record of 23.8 knots as at 8
October 1980. It is reported that she seems well able to sail faster. -

Speed record attempt with hydrofoil boat 'White Hawk' (incorrectly referred to
