How to use Fishing Spoons
Written by: John Teran – http://fishingspoons.org
Fishing spoons are a lure for any season because of the variety of spoons that are
available on the market. Since the fishing spoon is very popular all over the world it
has become so evolved that there is a spoon for any species and any season.
When you are considering which lure to use there are three factors which are the most
important. Those are Action, Color and Size. Below we will discuss these three
factors more in depth one by one.
The water temperature that a certain species of fish preferres should define your
spoon action. For example, if you are after Brown Trout in water that has a
temperature of 40 degrees, which is around 20 degrees below what they prefer (from
59 to 65 degrees), then you should use slower lure action. You can achieve slow lure
action either with a slower retrieve rate when casting or with a slower boat speed.
Fishing Spoon Color
The spoons color is a big factor for catching big fish. The one thing you should
consider the most when you are choosing a lure is color. The colors of the rainbow
come in handy here. On one end you have the colors red, orange and yellow which
should be used in the water column with the most light. On the other end of the
rainbow you have blue, indigo and violet, which should be used in darker and low
light waters. This is pretty basic and can be explained in one sentence: Bright lures
for bright conditions and dark lures for dark light.
There are also 2 neutral colors that can be used in any situation and those are white
and silver. But since recently there is a new color specter to consider and those are
glow in the dark colors. These lures will attract fish in dark or stained waters, and
pretty successfuly from my experience.
Fishing Spoon Size
The last but nothing less important factor – size. Here you have a pretty simple rule,
match lure size to the forage of your target.. If you have a slow fishing trip then you
should try smaller size fishing spoons. When you are fishing in the sun, bigger lures
can be a problem because they create too much flash and can scare away fish. If you
see that you catch less and less as the sun goes higher then you should try a smaller
lure.
When you go out to fish think about all of these factors to get the most out of your
fishing trip. If you can adjust to the current situation that will help you catch a lot of
fish!
