CSHO SPOTLIGHT: HEATH JAMES
CSHO CROSSES PLAINS TO LEND A HELPING HAND
As an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager and a Master Peace Officer in the State of Texas, Heath James is
experienced and committed to safety, and he credits his safety knowledge to his TEEX training. James says that the TEEX CSHO
program not only helped his company reach a goal of zero accidents/incidents, but it also opened a door to help keep his fellow
law enforcement officers safe. “Many of my fellow officers respond to oil field incidents and accidents in a first responder role, and
they need to know the hazards and safety protocols so they can go home to their families, too,” James said.
Since earning the TEEX CSHO certificate in the Oil & Gas and Petrochemical track in 2008, James has been active in
changing the safety culture in the oil & gas industry. He serves on the Ad Hoc Committee for the North Texas
Exploration and Production Safety Network (STEPS Network), which set new attendance records in bringing together
producers, contractors and OSHA personnel to work together for a safer oil field. “I have a passion for safety and
helping people,” James said. “TEEX’s CSHO program provided me the knowledge I needed to lead fellow
employees and officers toward a safer today and tomorrow.”

CSHO SPOTLIGHT: SERVANDO ELIZALDE
IMPLEMENTING SAFETY TRAINING REDUCES INJURIES
Servando Elizalde, Safety Supervisor with AUI Contractors, Inc., has learned that knowledge, education and training have lasting
rewards. Elizalde joined AUI, first as a pipe layer and then later as a backhoe/track hoe operator and utility/concrete foreman.
As his career progressed, his interest in safety grew and eventually led him to pursue the TEEX Certified Safety and Health Official
(CSHO) program, which paved the way to career advancement.
“I wanted to gain additional knowledge concerning OSHA rules and regulations, and I chose the Construction track in
order to meet that goal,” he said. “The TEEX instructors helped me in many ways,” noted Elizalde. “Their experience,
teaching method, and humor all helped me learn the material and apply it to my job at AUI.” Now, as Safety
Supervisor with AUI Contractors, Elizalde is responsible for weekly project inspections, and for providing training to
workers in the construction, general industry and railroad industry. Elizalde says that the TEEX CSHO program has
helped him implement better safety training, improve safety actions, and reduce workplace accident/injury rates
by 35 percent since 2006.

CSHO SPOTLIGHT: JEAN TAYLOR
CSHO LEVEL II TRAINING BENEFITS BRITISH SAFETY COORDINATOR
Occupational health and safety issues may not differ much across the pond, but Jean Taylor of England said the TEEX Certified
Safety and Health Official Level II (CSHO Level II) program showed her different ways to approach some of those issues. Jean Taylor
is a veteran in the health and safety field in the U.K. and serves as a safety and environmental coordinator with Printpack, Inc., one
of the largest packaging converters in the United States with 25 manufacturing facilities in the United States, England and Mexico.

“When I joined Printpack, I was invited to attend CSHO Level II training courses. It has certainly proved beneficial here in
the U.K.,” she said, adding that she has implemented some new initiatives as a result of the training. “One example is
accident investigation,” she said. “We now have a new accident incident form, which identifies the root cause and
ways in which we can eliminate further accidents from happening. We also investigate all near misses.”
