We have had some interesting lectures at the KU3A. It always helps when the speaker talks clearly and slowly
because we meet in a large hall.
One meeting was a talk about Coram foundling hospital. And how Handel and Hogarth contributed to it by cash
and their works of art. I learnt how to ‘read’ Hogarth’s pictures. How by painting the dress of an older woman and
the sleeves of a younger one in a fabric of identical design, Hogarth says that the women are mother & daughter.
One day if I’m ever in London I must visit the Coram museum and see Hogarth’s pictures for myself. The first
London performance of Handel’s Messiah was at the Foundling’s Hospital as a fund raiser. It became a
fashionable thing for the upper class ladies to support the hospital. Coram started it because there were so many
babies left at church and other doorways by women who could not afford to rear their babies.
Another meeting was about the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. The enthusiam of the
speaker showed the dedication and organisation of the staff who run the service. It made me proud to be a
subscriber.
I also attend the Philosophy sub group where the members speak on their favourite topics and then we all chip in
with our points of view. The subjects have included ‘representation’ and how we describe the world through our
own experiences. Also early Chinese thoughts and mechanisation. I can’t go into further detail because the group
is part of Warwick U3A and the full report belongs to their letter pages. When they decide to have a letter page.

Stilton and Chutney Rarebit Bites
Vegetarian - serves 8
For the Chutney; For the Rarebit:
2 red onions, thinly sliced 300g Stilton, crumbled 2 free-range eggs, beaten
4 tbsp muscovado sugar 200 Parmesan, grated 2 tsp wholegrain mustard
100ml balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp crème fraiche 6 slices sourdough or German rye bread
Preparation 15 minutes, cooking 35-40 minutes
Method:
1. Put the onions, sugar and vinegar into a large pan on a low heat. Cook for about 25 minutes, stirring now and
again, until gloopy and sticky. Cool. Mix together the cheeses, crème fraiche, eggs and mustard with some
seasoning, then chill.
2. To serve, heat the grill, lightly toast the bread and cut each slice into chunks. Put onto a baking sheet, spread a
teaspoon of chutney on each chunk, then pile on the rarebit mixture – as much as the little squares can hold. Grill
for 3 – 5 minutes until golden brown and bubbling .

th
We had our customary walk between Christmas and New Year on Wednesday 30 December. As we’d had a
frosty spell for over a week and it snowed the night before we had hoped for a cold bright day with scenic snowy
views. In fact it was a grey drizzly morning and only a small group of seven people met at the Green Man in
Kenilworth. We headed off to Rocky Lane and soon the rain stopped so we felt more cheerful. We passed through
Ashow and over the river Avon and at one stage were surprised to see the path had become a stream, and later a
muddy field gave us rather heavy boots. However, when we reached the mill we stopped next to the Avon for our
coffee stop, which proved to be more warming than we had expected. Allen had brought a flask of home-made
mulled wine and he explained to us how years ago he had opened up a sachet of a famous brand and noted and
counted the contents. This recipe was then used with his home-brewed wine – he also assured us that he had
boiled off the alcohol! Martin produced some slices of stollen so we set off on the last path feeling well fortified.
We reached Leek Wootton and then the thought of a good meal at the Green Man encouraged us on the long
stretch up the road back to Kenilworth .

Allen’s Staggering Brew (see above)
1 bottle red wine, 1 inch cinnamon stick, 8 cloves, 15 allspice berries, 2 inches orange peel, 1¾ oz sugar.
Place all spices in a spice infuser. Place infuser and all other ingredients into a saucepan and simmer for 5
minutes. Allow to stand for another 10 minutes. Serve hot.
OPTIONAL: Half an orange, cut in slices, may be added to the saucepan before simmering.

KENILWORTH U3A TRIP TO BLETCHLEY PARK – Tuesday 30th March 2010
Bletchley Park Estate was initially known as the Manor
of Eaton and, in 1086, was included in the Domesday
Book. In 1793 Thomas Harrison replaced the original
mansion. It became known as Bletchley Park in 1877
after Samuel Lipscomb Seckham bought the estate. In
1883 it was sold to Sir Herbert Samuel Leon, who
expanded the existing farmhouse into the present
mansion. The architecture is a mix of Victorian Gothic,
Tudor and Dutch Baroque.
Admiral Sir Hugh Sinclair (Naval Intelligence, head of MI6 and founder of the Government Code &
Cipher School) bought the site for £7,500, and from August 1939 Bletchley Park was used by
codebreakers as a safe place to work. Known as Station X, the high-level intelligence from here is
credited with shortening the war.
The Enigma cipher, invented in 1918, was thought to be unbreakable and the odds against anyone who
did not know the settings breaking the code, were a staggering 150 million, million, million to one. In
1932 The Poles had broken Enigma and with their help, in 1940, the brilliant mathematician Alan Turing
developed the Bombe, which greatly reduced the time required to decipher the daily changing Enigma
keys.
Visit price includes the coach and guided tours of the fascinating equipment, facilities and lovely grounds
