News from the Head Greenkeeper
After a frosty start to October, we have been grateful for the mild wet weather, which has helped the
golf course recover from the very dry, windy weather we experienced in August and September.
The first phase of the bunker works was completed in spring and the second phase, covering holes 16,
17 and 18, should be ready for play by the time you receive this newsletter. Thank you to our golfers
for your patience while the temporary greens have been in play. The Green Staff received comments
from golfers during the summer that the sand in the new bunkers on the first three holes had not Issue 21: Christmas 2009
settled and compacted very well. I looked into this problem with the assistance of a specialist from
Hawtree, the architects of the new bunkers, to try and discover the reason for this. The settling
maintenance carried out on the bunkers met with required standards, and an analysis of sand samples
showed no faults, so we believe that the high number of rounds and traffic through the bunkers, along
with the very dry summer, had an adverse effect on the settlement of the sand and its light texture.
We believe that the wet weather we are currently experiencing will ensure both the first phase and
second phase bunkers will settle down and we hope that our golfers will also assist in reducing the
traffic by keeping out of the bunkers!
The winter months will see some of our regular improvements taking place. We will be creating some
new synthetic winter tees and upgrading some of the pathways around the course. We also plan to Following the warm welcome our
