MAYNOOTH BOYS’ NATIONAL SCHOOL
Number 10 21st January, 2010
We are delighted to welcome everybody back to school. We hope you all had a very
enjoyable Christmas and are looking forward to this new term.
Reminder – Staff Meeting
Just a reminder that there will be a staff meeting on Wednesday 27th, so the school will
close at 12.30pm. As always, we ask that you collect your child promptly to allow us to
get the meeting started on time.
Mr. Joe McBride
Tuesday 22nd December 2009 was, sadly, Mr. Joe McBride’s last official day as a primary
school teacher. For his entire career, he was a highly valued teacher at Maynooth Boys’
In all, he spent 42 ½years as a dedicated and inspiring teacher at the school – an amazing
contribution to the education of 5 generations of children in Maynooth.
His enthusiasm and good humour will be greatly missed by staff, pupils and parents alike.
The Board of Management, on behalf of the entire school community, would like to thank
Joe for his wonderful contribution to so many aspects of the school and to wish him and
his wife Mary a long, healthy and happy retirement.
To mark Mr. McBride’s retirement, a special celebration night has been arranged at the
Glenroyal Hotel on Friday 12th March. Tickets will cost €15.00 and will be on sale
shortly. (Please note the change of date).
We are currently taking enrolments for children due to start school in September 2010. If
you have a son due to commence in September, be sure to send in a completed enrolment
form a.s.a.p. (but not later than 28th February).
If you have a friend or neighbour with a child due to commence, could you please bring
this information to their attention.
Children’s Table Quiz
The Annual Credit Union Table Quiz will take place in the school hall on Friday 29th
January at 7.30 p.m. There will be 2 sections in the quiz. Under 11 and Under 13.
We will be arranging and organising teams within the school. It is always an enjoyable
night for the boys and the Credit Union are excellent hosts, never failing to provide
refreshments for participants.
All Ireland Semi-Final
Best wishes to Maynooth G.A.A. Football who will be competing in the All Ireland
Intermediate Club Football semi-final this Sunday 24th January 2010. The game takes
place in the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick at 2.30 p.m. Hopefully there will be a lot of
supporters travelling to cheer the team on.
Christmas Carol Singing
A big thank you and well done to the boys from second and third class who entertained the
customers in Manor Mills Shopping Centre with their carol singing on 16th December.
They raised almost €400 which was used to purchase Christmas food hampers for needy
families in Maynooth. Thanks also to the teachers who helped the boys with their singing
and guitar playing and to the mams and dads who came along to support.
Picking up your son early?
If a child is being picked up during school hours, the person collecting should be 16 years
of age and over. Note should be sent to the teacher.
A new year brings a new football season. The Senior Football team has begun training for
the upcoming campaign. Matches will commence in March. The team hope to do well
this year and will be playing some challenge matches in the comings weeks. Good luck
Ceremony of Light
The Ceremony of Light for Confirmation candidates, (where responsibility for their own
faith is passed over from parents / guardians to their child), took place on Tuesday
evening. Fr. Liam and Fr. Paul led the ceremony, which always has a lovely atmosphere.
Special thanks to the boys from both of our 5th classes who provided beautiful singing in
the choir, under the stewardship of Ms. Buckley.
The next step in preparation for Confirmation is the Retreat Days as follows:
Mon 25th January - Mr. Fenton’s Class.
Tue 26th January - Mr. McGeady’s Class.
We have been notified that Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has delegated Fr. Ciaran
O’Carroll to be the celebrant for the Sacrament of Confirmation on the 4th February. Fr.
O’Carroll is the Episcopal Vicar for Evangelism for the Diocese of Dublin.
Sections of the school website, are being changed and updated by Guy Parker and Mr.
Davis at the moment (including the Homepage). Be sure to keep an eye on developments
over the next couple of weeks. We will be looking for feedback and your votes shortly.
We have been contacted by the management of Divine Word/Kairos who are our
neighbours on the other side of the Moyglare Road. Their grounds are private property
and under no circumstances should cars enter there without having official business on the
They have advised the Board of Management that unauthorised vehicles have been
entering their grounds at school opening and closing times and have asked for our
assistance in eliminating this. They have ordered signage prohibiting such access. The
Board strongly request that none of our parents/guardians trespass on their grounds in line
with their request to us.
The meeting of January 12th was cancelled due to the weather. The first meeting of 2010
will take place on Tuesday 2nd February at 8.00 p.m.
Work on the new extension is progressing at a steady pace. The weather did cause a few
delays, but we hope to have it completed by Easter.
All Weather Play Area
Casey Courts carried out much needed maintenance work on the All Weather play area
during December. The surface has been power-hosed and re-sanded. The next phase is to
address weaknesses in the fencing and to raise its heights on the NUIM and the Post
Mobile Phone Drive
Last year, as you all well know, a mobile phone recycling initiative was launched in the
school. Over 500 phones were collected for the Jack and Jill foundation. We would like to
say a big well done and a massive thanks to all who contributed phones and who helped us
reach our target. We are delighted to announce that the Interactive White Board we
received as part of the scheme has arrived and will be installed any day now!
Since the response to the last appeal was such a success, we have decided to run it again in
2010. We are aiming to collect a further 500 phones again. So if you received a new phone
at Christmas or if you are doing a spot of spring-cleaning, please don’t hesitate to send in
those old mobile phones!
Well done to all the pupils who entered the Credit Union Poster Competition. This year,
