Newsletter January 2010
Dear Colleagues,
First of all, we wish you all a very nice and healthy 2010!
You will find in this first Newsletter of 2010 information about the forthcoming international workshop of
our Scientific Committee in London and several other matters from or closely related to our
Committee.
International Workshop on ‘ Dissemination and Implementation of Evidence-based
,
Occupational Health Practice’ London, 6 - 8 October 2010
Our Scientific Committee's 16th international conference will have the format of an International
Workshop with a maximum of 75 participants. Prof John Harrison and Dr Ira Madan are hosting this
workshop which will take place from 6 to 8 October 2010 at the Hammersmith Conference Centre in
West London, UK
The main theme is ‘ Dissemination and Implementation of Evidence-based Occupational Health
.
Practice’The challenge now is to change professional behaviour amongst occupational health
practitioners to improve the quality of occupational health provided by health services. This workshop
will address the need to disseminate the messages within E-B guidelines and to promote their
implementation. Participants will take part in two out of four workshops lead by international experts,
followed by plenary sessions.

Attached to this Newsletter is a first flyer with information and a Call for Abstracts. Deadline for
submitting abstracts is April 30th 2010. Because of the limited number of participants, we advise you to
register in time.
New Secretary of our Committee: Dr Ira Madan
th
At our Cape Town meeting on 25 of March 2009, Dr Timo Leino was elected for the second
consecutive term as the secretary of the SC. Dr Ira Madan was proposed to replace Timo as a
secretary of the SC, if he would get elected to the ICOH board. As this was indeed the case, we are
very glad that Ira is willing to take over. Recently, Timo has handed over the secretarial documents
and tasks. We would like to thank Timo very much for all his excellent work for our committee and we
are glad that he is still joining us, in particular with respect to WHO-ICOH matters and with feedback
from the ICOH Board. You will find the address of Ira Madan at the end of this Newsletter.
Meeting of the ICOH SC on Health Services Research and Evaluation in Occupational Health
The next meeting of our Scientific Committee will be on October 7th 2010, from 16.30 - 18.00 during
the forthcoming International Workshop in London. The meeting room will be announced later. The
minutes of our last meeting at the Cape Town Congress are attached to this Newsletter.
Joint ICOH - Wonca working group
Some interesting developments have followed the two successful Special Sessions during Cape Town
2009, organized by our Committee on the subject: “ Bridging Occupational and General Health Care:
.
coping with the Blind Spot” Based on these sessions in general, and more specific because of his
keynote in this Session, the main organizer, Peter Buijs, was asked by the WHO to attend its first
1
inter-country consultation about a draft of the new WHO strategy regarding the global workforce: not
aiming any longer at OHS services in every country – only reaching 10-15% of the global workforce -
but trying to empower Primary Health Care with basic Occupational Health Care elements. Together
with the Chilean government, the WHO held the consultation in Santiago (4-7 May 2009). The 10
invited global experts presented their country situation (next to Chile and the Netherlands: UK,
Finland, Italy, China, Thailand, USA, Brazil, S-Africa) and discussed very positively this new strategy
with WHO and ILO officials. Jorma Rantanen was the Conference reporter, and his report has been
finalized this autumn, but not yet released.
As secretary of the joint ICOH-Wonca working group, Peter Buijs was also invited by Wonca-Europa
to their annual conference (Basel, 16/9-9-09). There he arranged a meeting with the presidents of
Wonca-World (Prof. Chris van Weel) and Wonca Europe (Prof. Igor Svab) and with Dr Ivan Ivanov, the
WHO official responsible for the new strategy (and member of our Committee). Both Wonca
presidents were enthusiast about the WHO strategy and proposed to use their 2010 conferences to
proceed:
- The triennial Wonca World Congress (Cancun, 19-23 May 2010): e.g. a Round Table to start the
global debate on Primary Health Care and Work between OPs and GPs.
- the yearly Wonca-Europe Congress, Malaga, 7-9 October 2010: Start of the debate in Europe,
more precisely on: Can Europe be an example for other continents? Or: What are/or how can we
make good practices in Europe! (workshop or a more ‘ classical’session)

for work in general health care as a serious problem regarding the global work force.
So here is a real global challenge for our Committee, especially for the members of the joint ICOH-
Wonca working group on this issue!

Cochrane Occupational Health Field (COHF)
At the Cochrane Colloquium, 11-14 October 2009 in Singapore, a successful first exploratory meeting
was held to find out if there was sufficient support for changing the Occupational Health Field into an
Occupational Health and Safety Review Group. Because there was support from the side of the chairs
of the Cochrane Collaboration, adjoining review groups, authors and other fields, the COHF will
therefore continue with another exploratory meeting at the Towards Better Work and Well-being
conference in Helsinki in February 2010. If this meeting shows sufficient support and no well-grounded
opposition then the COHF will apply for a change in status with the Collaboration. The change would
mean that the COHF can operate more efficiently in the production of occupational health and safety-
related Cochrane reviews.
Out of the COHF a new Cochrane review on ‘ Educational interventions for the prevention of eye
injuries’ was published by: Anupa Shah, Karen Blackhall, Katharine Ker and Daksha Patel. Eye
injuries are a preventable cause of blindness, yet remain a significant disabling health problem that
affects all age groups. Despite health and safety requirements and widespread legislation, injuries can
still occur at home, in the workplace, during recreational activities or as a result of road crashes.
The authors concluded that there is no reliable evidence that educational interventions are effective in
preventing eye injuries. See:

A NIVA course ‘ Evidence-based Approach for OH Professionals’ be held from 1st - 3rd March
2010 in Hotel Savonia, Kuopio, Finland. This popular course focuses on the application of the
evidence-based approach to occupational health problems as encountered in the daily practice of
occupational health professionals. The course will give the participants an opportunity to work on their
own problems in small groups in addition to a systematic overview of critical appraisal skills. All
interested practitioners from occupational health services are welcomed, preferably with some
knowledge of epidemiology and medicine; and occupational health and safety researchers with an
interest in the practice of evidence-based methods. For more information on course contents and how
to register go to: http://www.niva.org/courses/6001.htm

of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (PREMUS, from the ICOH SC on Musculoskeletal
Disorders) will be held in Angers, France, immediately followed from September 2nd – September 3rd

Disability Prevention and Integration. This meeting is the primary conference activity of the ICOH SC
on Work Disability Prevention and Integration. The deadline for submitting abstracts for both
Conferences has been extended to 31st of January 2010. For further information:

Proceedings of the 15th International Congress on Occupational Health Services in Paris
The joint CISME-ICOH congress on theme “ Indicators of Occupational Health”organized in Paris in
October 2008 was quite clearly a success. It was very well-attended (700 persons) and we have
received appreciative comments from participants from many sides. In consequence, we agreed that
many of the contributions deserved to be publicly available via the INTERNET, at least for contributors
agreeing to such an arrangement. Due to organizational problems at CISME, this process has been
severely delayed. Peter Westerholm and Carel Hulshof are now in contact with the organisers and
with CISME to avoid further delays in bringing matter to a best possible solution. We will keep you
informed.
