From Your President:
Hi folks, well 2009 came and went so fast that I am still carrying the few extra
pounds from last years Christmas lunch and here we are another festive season. Issue: 2010-1
It has been a big year for our family with a number of milestones. Our son Paul
headed off to live in Melbourne, I celebrated my 60th birthday in Malta, our
daughter Hayley graduated from ‘uni’ and here I am celebrating 10m years as
President of the Malta Society. I am sure your household has had memorable Inside this issue:
occasions this year and perhaps some you may rather like to forget than cele-
brate. Dates to remember 1
I have had the opportunity to be present at a couple of Maltese functions in
Committee members 2
Sydney this year. What occasions they were. I guess when you have the popu-
lation, getting the numbers is not that hard but it was the Maltese culture, spirit Library additions 2
and family unity that was so evident at these functions. I think this is what is
missing here in New Zealand with us Maltese. Whilst there are the regular few Trivia 2
who continue their ongoing support at our humble gatherings there are many
more who would rather not be reminded that they are of Maltese descent. This Christmas lunch 3
is fine but it is your children that we want to be aware of their roots as it is
your children that will need to keep the Maltese culture alive in New Zealand In the News 4
and this Society going on into the next decade and beyond.
In March 2010 the Maltese government is holding a Convention for Maltese Picnic 5
Living Abroad. Rose Godfrey represented our Society in 2000 and presented Condolences 5
a paper. The four main areas of discussion in March will be as follows;
• The Challenge of Change Education, Culture, Heritage
• Youth—Towards the Future
• The Elderly and the Community
• Consular and Citizenship Issues
Anyone interested in presenting a paper has until March 8th to submit a 3-
minute synopsis on one of the above four topics. Further details below.
Is-Sena t-Tajba (Happy New Year)
Dates to remember,
• Sunday 21st Feb 2010 Annual Picnic Wenderholm from 11.30am
• March 15th-17th 2010 Malta Convention. Further details visit
website www.mfa.gov.mt/convention. Financial assistance of
500 Euro is available plus discount travel with Lufthansa.
• Trivia - The actual smallest sovereign entity in the world is the Sovereign
Military Order of Malta (S.M.O.M). It is located in the city of Rome, Italy,
has an area of two tennis courts, and as of 2001 has a population of 80, 20
less people than the Vatican. It is a sovereign entity under international law,
just as the Vatican is.
• Library addition - Jukebox Queen of Malta by Nicholas Rinaldi (Hard
Copy) Donated by Edith Mihaljevich. This is a beautiful romantic novel set
in 1942 war torn Malta. I have read it myself and highly recommend it
• 2010 Malta Society calendars sold out .

Christmas Lunch Page 3
Sunday 6th December a small but loyal group of members, family and
friends gathered at Fairway Lodge on the Takapuna Golf course for our
annual Christmas Lunch.
The catering was excellent and all the guests thoroughly enjoyed a won-
derful afternoon. Thanks to Margaret who organised the carol singing and
the trivia quiz. It was also a perfect opportunity to show off the 1st 2010
Malta Society calendar produced by Carolyn and Hayley which proved
very popular resulting in a number of sales on the day. The limited pro-
duction run have now been exhausted. We will look at doing another issue
for 2011 so please start looking through your Malta photos highlighting
the unique countryside, seaside, architecture or feature that makes Malta
