Getting started with Stickwiki
Getting started with Stickwiki isn’t as hard as you might think. If you’re this far, you’ve already downloaded the files. You’re well on your way!
Making Stickwiki your own Since you’ll be sharing your Stickwiki portfolio with others, it’s important that it have a unique name so that it doesn’t get mixed up with someone else’s file. The first thing that you will do is rename the file. Right click the file titled “stickwiki-0.04” and click on “Rename”. You’re going to name the file Last_first, e.g., Doe_Jane.
Opening Stickwiki If you intend to make any changes to Stickwiki, you must use Mozilla Firefox instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer. To open your portfolio, right click the file, choose “Open With” from the menu, and then pick Firefox. If you don’t see the Firefox icon, click on “Choose Program . . .” and browse the list of programs. If you use Internet Explorer to make changes to your portfolio, your work will be lost when you close the file.
Editing pages You can edit pages in your portfolio as many times as you like. To edit pages, click on the pencil icon at the top right of the screen.
In the big box in the middle, make your additions, deletions, or corrections. Follow the instructions on the Stickwiki cheat sheet if you want to change the appearance of the text in some way, add lists, or create links. When you’re done editing, click on the disk icon at the top right of the page to save your changes. Changes will not be saved automatically – save your work periodically.
Creating new pages You can create as many pages as you like in your portfolio. To add pages, click on Edit at the bottom of the “Table of Contents” box.
In the big box in the middle, type the title of the page you’d like to create between double brackets, [[like this]]. Click on the disk icon at the top right of the page to save your changes. Pages that exist but are empty appear in red text – click on the red link to open your new page, and then follow the instructions for editing pages to make changes to your new page.
Saving your work Your Stickwiki portfolio is the only copy there is – your work won’t be automatically stored somewhere in cyberspace, and there’s no way to recover a lost, accidentally deleted, or corrupted file. Losing your work could be disastrous for you, and I strongly recommend that you do three things to prevent losing your work: 1) copy and paste your work into your portfolio from Word – don’t make changes in the portfolio itself that you don’t have a record of elsewhere, 2) keep a backup copy of your portfolio on an extra disk, saved to your user account on campus, on a computer at home, or somewhere else safe – your flash drive should not be the only place you save your work, and 3) you will see that Stickwiki creates a folder with the same name as your file; do not delete the folder. If you attempt to delete the folder, your Stickwiki portfolio will vanish too.
Good luck! If you have questions, please stop by during office hours or schedule an appointment so that we can discuss the assignment.
