Master Plan to Guide Future of Bryan Martyn Oval
The Bryan Martyn Oval in Newport is set for a complete overhaul after Hobsons Bay City Council adopted the Bryan Martyn Oval Master Plan. Williamstown North Ward Councillor Peter Hemphill said the Bryan Martyn Oval was used by many Hobsons Bay residents. “The Bryan Martyn Oval provides a venue to play organised sports and is currently home to a senior and junior cricket club, a junior football club, and is used for many primary school sporting events,” said Cr Hemphill. “The initial idea for the master plan was developed by Council in partnership with local organisations, sporting groups and residents. “The redevelopment of the oval will turn this pocket into a real focal point for Newport and the wider community.” The draft master plan highlighted numerous areas for improvement at the oval including the sports pavilion and maintenance sheds, unmade paths and car parking, antiquated sports oval floodlighting, replacement of the perimeter fencing, and improved security lighting. “The pavilion and change rooms are in urgent need of refurbishment,” said Cr Hemphill. As part of Council’s Capital Works Program, Council will consider investing $850,000 over the next three to four years to improving the facilities at the Bryan Martyn Oval. The Mayor of Hobsons Bay Councillor Carl Marsich said the redeveloped oval would provide a place of recreation for all Hobsons Bay residents. “The Bryan Martyn Oval Master Plan aims to provide Hobsons Bay residents and visitors with quality recreational facilities,” said the Mayor. “The refurbished oval will offer better opportunities for various activities such as walking, jogging, football, cricket, and even quiet spaces for relaxing with a good book or enjoying a picnic. “Council is striving to achieve the best facilities for an active outdoor lifestyle for all residents.” Preliminary works are due to commence before June. Works are expected to be substantially completed by the close of the financial year, and fully completed over the following two years. A draft master plan for the Market Street reserve was on public exhibition in November and December last year, with one written submission received by Council.
