CONFERENCE SPOTLIGHT Media Financing Forum 2008 9 – 11 December 2008, SUNTEC Singapore Theme: “Understand, Adapt and Evolve - Towards a Market for Asian Content” Traditionally, the Asian film and television industry has generally been dependent upon itself to fuel the content development and production process, with limited distribution beyond the geographical boundaries of the content's origins. This was perhaps due to the very ethnic nature of the content, coupled with the lack of demand from outside the region. Even within Asia, cooperative development of content between countries was perhaps best described as “infrequent”, and interest in the industry from outside of Asia almost non-existent. In recent years, the industry - especially the Asian film industry - had been undergoing much transformation. The rapid development of the Indian film industry and the highly successful distribution of Korean developed content within the region and beyond, coupled with the growing interest around the world for all things “Asian”, the region is witnessing an unprecedented growth in the development and production of content and its subsequent distribution. This potential growth in the industry has garnered much interest from US and European industry-related companies, many of which have subsequently established operations in this region. This influx brings with it new perspectives on content and business models. Indeed, there has been quite some numbers of good Asian content being developed and distributed around the world as a result. However, the industry in Asia remains very distinct and evolving, and is constantly learning and adapting content and business ideas from their western counterparts. With the diversity and dynamism within the region, it will hopefully be in the not too distant future when we will be able to witness business models and platforms adapted from the US and European markets being applied successfully within this region and in turn enabling more good Asian content to be viewed by an international audience. With the theme of “Understand, Adapt and Evolve - Towards a Market for Asian Content”, the Media Financing Forum 2008 will present the views and insights of industry leaders with the focus of presenting viable business models employed in the US, Europe and Asia in the areas of content development, financing its production and the subsequent sales and distribution of content. Through the presentations, interactive discussions and tea session discussions, the Forum hopes that participants will be able to take away important ideas that will help provide an added impetus to transform the industry. The use of Widgets is growing in an enormous speed on PC and is said to invade TV viewing in no time. What business opportunity does it present? How can traditional TV operators enhance its offerings to the new generation of TV viewers? SESSION ONE: Widgets and Personalized Content In this session, we will discuss about the format of Widget content, which is shifting from the comprehensive portal to the personalized space, where users have control over the selection and arrangement of content. Change is the only constant in technological environment. The rapid development brings about greater convergence between different technology platforms and once a unique feature of one platform can be quickly eroded by convergence. Widgets, already invading personal computers of many, are said to have the potential to revolutionize consumer behaviors in TV watching. What is a Widget? Widget is bite-size data that is streamed onto the screens of computers, providing useful information such as news, sports, video, pictures, searches, games, songs, blogs, auctions, etc. Currently, TV viewers can customize their viewing preferences made possible by video on demand technology. With Widgets, viewers can receive more information about what they see on the TV screen. For example, viewers only get to see product information in a 30 second commercial determined by the advertisers currently. Any additional information on the product will require follow up action in either calling up the agent or paying a visit to the retail store, but with Widget, viewers can instantly view the varieties, different range of products and even color availability with a push of the TV remote controls. This conference aims to introduce the rising opportunities and paradise shift in consumer behavior for content providers and advertisers through the use of Widgets on TV programmes and advertising.
